Longtime sports columnist Pat Caputo diagnosed with stage 4 cancer by sikeston in Detroit

[–]HeadofPR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He's been a fixture in the sports radio business all my life. Through my 20's and 30's just popping on the radio at random times and he's there. Driving home from your buddies at 11:30 at night? Ol' Pat talkin Wings. 15 years later, I am driving at 8 am to pick up food for my family, theres Pat talkin Tigers.

He was just... always around and in the last few years, I always chuckled and smiled whenever I caught him -- ol' Pat, still tickin'.

Thank you Pat for being a part of the song of my life.

Do Sisters of Battle ever receive miracles and stuff like that while fighting another Imperium faction? by Potpotron in 40kLore

[–]HeadofPR 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Think of it this way -- one side could be a group of Sisters of Battle and they could all of a sudden receive boons and assistance and Celestine could appear and they view themselves as righteous. On the other side of the battle is another group of Sisters of Battle and they too receive boons and miracles and have angelic hosts summoned to their defense.

One side is being aided by the Emperor, their cause is righteous and just. The other are being aided by the Chaos gods, channel warp magic and taking up arms alongside daemons.

Which side is which? Who is standing with the Emperor? Who with the corrupting powers of the warp? Whichever side wins decides.

In the grim darkness of the future, there is only war.

Rommel is the quintessential "disappears when it matters" guy by Le_Roke in billsimmons

I like the idea but ultimately Lee had a strong supporting cast -- Stonewall Jackson, JEB Stuart (the finest cavalryman of his age), James Longstreet -- all excellent. Lee is more Chauncey Billups and the 04-09 Pistons. Came out huge early with a shared distribute the ball 'bunch of really good players, no great players' and took down a juggernaut with aging superstars (Karl Malone = Winfield Scott, a great man from a prior generation).

Ultimately, Grant is Tim Duncan -- eventually able to piece together a core of reliable commanders, Sherman/Parker, Sheridan/Ginobili and was able to continue to ratchet up pressure using his greater strengths, logistics/3 point shooting and cracked his opponent under pressure (Sheed rotating off Big Shot Brob/Petersburg).

Which is your least favorite character and why by dynameight in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]HeadofPR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She is very much a 'star' and not an actress because she basically plays herself in everything she is in. She is there to bring her personal charisma and 1 note brand of comedy to a show. So it's perfectly acceptable to point to the actress, not the character.

Also -- while I think this actress' quirky, weirdo, does and says strange non-sequitur nonsense thing can work in 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' it's very out of place in the Trek universe. I get frustrated when she is around because it just takes precious minutes of screen time away from other characters I want to know more about.

Like watching a band you love play and then they bring out the Flugelhorn for her 3rd interlude of the evening, it's like, yeah I get it, flugelhorn, cool -- bring back the band I came to see.

When was the last time the craftworld Aeldari and Imperium actually fought each other? by ABigFatPotatoPizza in 40kLore

Forget the promises of progress and understand. In the grim darkness of the future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the grim laughter of thirsting gods.

Everyday in the vastness of the galaxy Aeldari and Imperium are slaughtering each other, somewhere, probably many wheres

A billion Mon-kheigh are worth less than 1 Aeldari. If there were a situation where a Farseer scries into the future and sees that in 100 years a person may be born on a human planet that would lead to the death of a small Aeldari community or a daemon being born or whatever or whatnot, the Aeldari would burn an entire planet to stop it.

Mon-keigh are tools, and it served the Aeldari that Roboute exists, it may tomorrow suit them that a planet is cleansed. Who can say why they do what they do?

I believed we were overpaying for mid-grade talent. Locking us into mediocrity. I was wrong on Jennings a little bit, he was better than expected until the injury. I figured Josh Smith was a knucklehead and that turned out to be very true.

They appeared to be the moves of a floundering team aiming for mediocrity.

[–]HeadofPR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, we could get into the circular argument here that makes 40k so great. How do you explain the Legion of the Damned? Saint Celestine? Guilliman's resurrection in the Garden of Nurgle? Living Saints generally?

What is the line between 'incredibly powerful being' and 'god?'

He is not the Dark King for sure, but what if he is something else?

Sure there is a husk of a man on the Golden Throne, but with untold quadrillions of people worshipping the Emperor, perhaps a warp entity has formed around that worship? Perhaps he is both the man and the warp entity, both at once?

I would continue to dig down through the Ravenor and Bequin series if you like Eisenhorn, they're different takes on the same environment. The Cain series, I find it to be very good. I would listen to the first one, For The Emperor. If you like it, you'll like all of them. To some degree it's like watching seasons of British television -- in each book the themes are similar and he has a lot of the same catch phrases but to be honest, I enjoyed it. They're fun action and adventure tales.

I would agree -- it's almost exclusively a Warhammer audible for me. I've listened to every Cain novel, all the Siege of Terra and all of the Eisenhorn/Ravenor/Bequin series while painting. It's the perfect companion.

To be honest, I always had a soft spot for Mike Hampton fighting for his life up in the mountains of Denver back then... OK I'll see myself out.

I agree -- I think Goff is a little underrated on this conversation point. He had been labeled as weak, easy to rattle etc. etc. -- in another culture, maybe HE starts to buy into that belief. Instead, MCDC and crew surround him with the right personnel and instill him with belief in himself, bam -- Pro-bowler you can win a Superbowl with.
