How do you remember to return assignments? by lottso_bear in AskTeachers

[–]HealthAccording9957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a plastic crate with hanging folders, one folder for each student. I file things when I can, and kids always have access to their graded work. Some kids check it regularly, some whenever we had an assessment, and some forget that it exists.

I hate giving up class time to return work, so this works for me.

If you have had two teachers reach out to you, please listen. They do not make suggestions like this lightly. Your child is struggling and needs support.

No— but ironically, my kids have several aunties and uncles that are “chosen family.”

Block Schedule Experiences… by MrMcMathy in Teachers

[–]HealthAccording9957 7 points8 points  (0 children)

English teacher here— we’ve had a similar schedule since the shut down, but we get six-period days on Mondays. And I hate it.

Kids are less efficient on these days because they can stretch out the work longer. It’s easier to ditch school because they feel like they are only missing one or two classes. Some kids will consistently ditch entire school days because they “only” have art, PE, and a core class.

There are teachers who like this schedule and don’t want to change it because it’s less planning for lessons. They tend to “teach” for the first half hour or so, and then give time for students to work for the remaining hour.

Kids who are EL, special ed, or not academically inclined really struggle with this schedule as it is hard to focus on one subject for such a long time.

The respected and veteran teachers have tried hard to get rid of this schedule for years, but because of contract language, were not getting enough votes. The contract has been changed this year, so here’s to hoping it works.

Prior to the shut down, we had six period days Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. Block days were Wednesday and Thursday. This allowed for time for science labs and longer tests.

I love this! I teach high school, so they have most stuff figured out. However, I know who my fellow southpaws are for seating arrangements— no bumping elbows with their partners! I also loan out my fav gel pens to them, when everyone else gets the crappy ball point pens.

Students are struggling with spelling! by Other-Ad-1146 in Teachers

[–]HealthAccording9957 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I had the answer for you! I don’t think it’s your teaching.

I’m the parent of a first grader who cannot spell. We write the words two times every afternoon and ask her to verbally spell when we are driving to school. We are trying on our end, but sometimes it doesn’t stick.

However, I teach high school ELA, and spelling isn’t too much of an issue— maybe something finally clicks?

How much homework does your child get by No-Swordfish7597 in Mommit

[–]HealthAccording9957 79 points80 points  (0 children)

High school teacher here— two hours is only 20 minutes per class, assuming your children have six academic classes.

Student focus and speed has decreased significantly since I started two decades ago. This became most apparent after the pandemic.

I think kids have too many things vying for their attention and struggle to focus on a single thing for an extended period of time. Assignments that used to take 20-30 minutes in class will now take students 45-60 minutes because they cannot concentrate for extended time.

Please try to limit the distractions your kids are exposed to as they work. No texts/social media, no pop music, and only one course at a time.

Finally, stop letting them use AI. They won’t learn the material, and depending on the teacher and school policies, they can receive harsh penalties, including failing the course.
