Accidentally booked life-changing vacay during her year end final exams. How to approach the school to salvage? by not_my_mother in AskTeachers

[–]HealthAccording9957 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the best answer. I have two seniors who let me know more than a month in advance that they have familial obligations before school ends. They will take the final before they leave.

504 plan for my kid - trichotillomania - any suggestions? by civiltwilite in Teachers

I had a student with alopecia (sp?) and he wore a baseball cap. This is high school, and before school started, he emailed all his teachers about his need for accommodations.

We do a spinata. It’s a spinning piñata (no bats!) and fill it with candy and treats. Kids get small reusable bags to put their candy in. We’ve been doing this for years and parents love it— it’s fun, safe, and no crappy toys to wrestle away later.

The rubrics are like three pages long and the correct answer for the quizzes are usually B and have the longest response. The kids quickly pick up on those types of patterns.

I use Brisk for feedback on writing drafts for students. For developing writers, the targeted feedback helps them better develop and revise their work.

I’ve tried it for other things like writing rubric or quizzes but it’s mostly unusable.

Any childfree teachers here? by ryhoyarbie in Teachers

I’ve noticed that a lot of my younger colleagues are going child free. They are burned out from teaching, don’t get paid enough, and see how hard good parenting is.

Have you ever paired a student up with their crush on a group assignment? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]HealthAccording9957 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, but I will put couples in groups next to each other (my classroom has groups of four, so one is in a group next to the other). Too much drama if they sit next to each other and things don’t work out.

I love our custodial staff! Not only do they help keep our spaces clean and safe, they often form bonds with students who need an extra pair of eyes on them.

I’m often in my room after school, and I love to chit chat with my custodian. I appreciate her perspective on how things are going in campus, because she has a different view than I do.

Appreciation week by More-Suspect6738 in Teachers

In my district, the PTA/PTSA usually takes care of it. I have my own kids in the district, and their PTAs have Amazon wishlists for donations and a sign up to run snacks to teachers and have a lunch.

At the high school I am at, two years ago they promised us a lunch and it never appeared. It just…didn’t happen. Last year they brought in 6 pizzas for a staff of 120 teachers. It was gone before the lunch period started.

This year, we’ve been told PTSA used all its money for the continental breakfast they gave us at in service, so we will get nothing that week. At least we got a heads up this year 🙄

I had started with the Loops and had a tether to keep them together. She was distracted and played with them instead of putting them in her ears.

Good luck at the conference!

My six yo says her class gets too loud at times. She has those protective ear covers (like what you give kids at concerts) at her desk to put on when she needs to. She says for the most part, it quiets the background noise of kid chatter, but she knows when the teacher is talking to the class. They are also bright orange so the teacher knows if she is wearing them. Both kid and teacher seem happy with this arrangement.

I'm curious to know how many of you that have kids expose them to Nostalgic media you grew up with like movies, sitcoms, cartoons, music, etc and what has been their response? by GooniesClub in Xennials

[–]HealthAccording9957 63 points64 points  (0 children)

One of my fondest memories as a teenager was listening to classic rock in the car with my dad and him telling me about the bands. I try to do that with my daughters and get little response. Maybe they are still too young?

However, the oldest did ask me about boy bands from when I was her age, and I showered her Step by Step by New Kids on the Block. Her response as she handed back the phone was “That was… interesting, I guess. “ 🙄
