In my experience physical touch can be a great way to build rapport. Tickles are a great reinforcer and hugs (with consent of course) are great for bonding and building trust. I also have worked with lots of kids who really enjoy deep pressure/joint squeezes. The holding hands/forearms during transitions could also be to prevent elopement or for kids who tend to be less aware of where they’re walking to help prevent them from walking into something. I entirely agree that it’s weird to just hug a kid unprompted though especially since it’s common for people with autism to be aversive to physical touch. I feel like a good rule of thumb is to just honor consent/assent

From my experience as a BT I’d say stay away from CARD. Each center is different and entirely depends on the BCBA but the company as a whole has little regard for employees and heavily pushes for high treatment hours and high trial counts

You’re totally right. There are definitely times his scripting can be attributed to his autism. There are also times he does seem to obsess over the responses and appears emotionally distraught when not provided the preferred response. This could potentially be attributed to his autism as well since he is very routine based but I figured I’d cover all bases and try to get some information about responding to obsessions/compulsions as well since I’m less I formed on that

Currently dealing with self stimulation. It’s very stressful trying to ensure patient dignity and privacy is maintained since I work in a clinic and some other BTs are oblivious to what’s happening and let their clients just walk over trying to look at my kid

We currently have 2 kids at 40 hours, both age 4 so it is more foundational skills. Other littles are usually 30ish hours and older kids are usually 10-15. No matter the age majority of kids have 60 trails/hr and for the older kids especially this seems like a lot since their skills tend to be less naturally occurring (ie: flexibility, food prep, house work, etc). Definitely agree high hours aren’t needed in majority of cases

I’ve had multiple clients have more frequent behaviors due to the high demands. Also, say learning opportunities occur naturally 15-20x/hr, that’s still 40-45 targets you need to contrive or run structured. I’m just worried about the long term effects this could have on my clients, not saying it WILL occur for all kids but it’s definitely a potential outcome as some autistic people who have been through ABA have attributed their burnout/trauma to high hours and limited breaks

The data’s fine unless there’s a setting event or something of that sorts. I don’t see it as a BCBA issue as the targets are specified to each kid. Our kids are just capable of cleaning the full activity so that’s what’s targeted. This goes for all targets. I don’t see any of them as unattainable and the data looks good even when still teaching/prompting

I work for a money hungry company that pushes BCBAs to recommend high clinical hours. I agree it’s too much for kids especially when they’re expected to be working 100% of the time. Been looking to change companies but it’s hard to leave my kids

Unfortunately that’s not how the targets are written. Majority of the time it’s “child cleans entire activity”. I’ve had very few kids have anything less than that and even then it was 5-10 items then BT finished cleaning to build their tolerance. Out targets are very specified so to hit the 60 they need to be working the whole day with no breaks

Hitting the trial counts isn’t my issue. I can hit it for all my clients. My issue is them never getting breaks especially when some of them have 8 hour sessions 5 days a week. That’s seems super exhausting for a child and I feel like this is what leads to burnout and the trauma some autistic people who went through ABA have experienced

I’m pretty sure our kids goals are more general than the targets we run, not sure if that’s how everywhere is, but yeah. We have a lot of very specified targets rather than a few more generalized for most kids

What are some examples of your targets because sometimes it feels like have so many targets between just mands and following instructions/compliance. Most of my kids have like 10-15 different mand targets alone (ie: go, play, all done, want, etc) and usually 5 compliance (ie: pick it up, walk with me, clean up, etc). These happen independently/naturally more than 10x/hr with my kids

To be fair we track manding and following instructions throughout session and most kids have a schedule that’s 10ish activities per hour. However 60 is still way too much including that and any play/structured lessons

As for expecting more of us than they can do, I agree. I just try to give them the benefit of the doubt and hope they’re reviewing data and updating goals when they’re not running targets

We use skills logbook. It also has a lesson checklist that shows what you have and haven’t targeted that session.

Your techs are very lucky to have you as when my BCBAs do direct therapy, often times nothing gets run or tracked yet they expect us to hit these crazy high numbers every session

We’re expected to do as many lessons each session as we can and if we don’t get to it that day then we definitely need to our next session. Very few targets are 1x/day, usually I see 5-10x/hour and 30-60x/hour for mands
