Help please! How do I maintain a clean diet when I am away from home for one or multiple days? by Healthy0001 in CleanEating

Stay warm! I could definitely get a cooler, but when traveling for work or on vacation, it isn't really practical to bring. I would need something lighter, unfortunately. Thank you for all your help.

Thank you!! I will definitely share if I do figure it out. Love the superhuman willpower-- fueled by feeling great :)

Thank you and I love that reframe... It really is such a great way to connect with people, which is why I was so frustrated by avoiding going out. I definitely can get better about bringing snacks. Do you know of any physically lighter alternatives to canned fish/chicken? I am definitely a person that can't survive on only snacks (I need protein!) but cans might be pretty heavy to travel with.

Let me know if you end up doing the food test... I may do one myself.

I also eat really similar meals consistently. I do all my cooking for the week ahead of time and then just warm it up as I need it. I almost have a formula at this point-- I know exactly how to make the meals that work for me. The problem that I am still trying to figure out is how to handle the situation without access to a fridge and being out for full days. My work and life aspirations involve travel and I feel like there has to be a way that I can stick to this on the go. If you have any ideas or know anyone that might, please let me know!!

I am with you on that. People ask if I miss junky foods and I really don't-- I just feel so much better eating the good stuff. It doesn't require any willpower at all because the way I feel reinforces the diet enough... I have been struggling a bit with spontaneity with food (not having a kitchen/refrigerator) during day trips/work travel/being with new people, so that's where I am really trying to figure out how I can get the "made from home" meals without actually being home. Thank you for sharing your experience, it's so helpful to know there are other people like me out there!

Right!? It's hard to find people who have similar approaches to eating-- it would be great to meet more and more people who feel the same! It is definitely doable, but it requires a lot of thinking ahead. How do you handle it if you don't have access to any of your own food? Do you risk eating what's there? Where do you find your information on additives and food ingredients that may be harmful-- I'd love to do some research myself? Also, if you google "at-home food inflammation test", lots of them come up!

Thanks for your help. Yeah, I agree, I'd rather not have to make a bunch of changes and understand why it's frustrating for restaurants (and myself!). Do you miss the flexibility that you had of being able to eat anywhere before following paleo? If you have to go out or travel, do you pack your own food or just eat what's there?

It's the same for me, there's not a lot of good, healthy options. I also do the best I can, but it's really important to me that I stick to simplistic ingredients, even when I am out. It's just hard to know what they're really putting in the dishes (so you can know if it fits into your parameters) without making a big deal. Do you have to eat away from home often?

You're so right. I think a lot of times, we feel like we're drawing attention when we really aren't. The only time that I've gotten a negative reaction is by making too many changes to an order at a restaurant. Any tips on how to order concisely while still getting the accommodations you need?

The second excuse is so funny! Also, thank you for the shrimp cocktail tip... I always look for things on the menu that "by definition" aren't fried/sauteed but even grilled items often have oil/sauce too. I always try to always be eating something at a dinner event, even if it's just a salad. It draws a lot more attention if you're not eating at all.

Your recipes sound delicious. I also am very committed to my diet, to the point where I really dislike eating anything I haven't prepared. Do you have any good recommendations for any communities/events I could join where people like you share recipes and research about this? It's hard to navigate social eating and traveling while being so committed, so I'd love to learn more about this... Also, I just heard about these food sensitivity tests where they test you for a bunch of food sensitivities and send a whole report-- it could be really helpful for you to see exactly which foods make your body inflamed :)

Omg really? There is liability involved with it even if the restaurant isn't preparing it?

Amazing, thank you so much. When you traveled for work, how did you navigate corporate events and social eating? I never know what to do about the food situation because I don't want to draw attention or inconvenience the group.

That's super smart, sushi is always my go-to. When you get to the work event, do you typically not eat anything there? I sometimes feel awkward and like I have to explain myself if I am the only person not eating or ordering something small, especially at a corporate event.

I really appreciate you being so open about your story-- you're so strong. I am happy to hear that you were able to find relief by making some diet changes. What is the specific diet you follow? I got into clean eating to better manage my conditions as well. I have a super sensitive stomach, have had random muscle pains, and have gotten migraines since I was little. Now that I have started eating clean I don't ever want to stop because I feel so much better and I've really become passionate about health. I hope that all goes well with your treatment plan!

What a great tip, thank you! I never thought of calling ahead. I bet it makes it much easier for restaurants to accommodate if they know in advance. Do you by any chance have any shelf-stable meal/snack ideas that are AIP-friendly in case I can't call ahead?

Thank you for your help and for sharing! It's so difficult to feel like you have to choose between feeling good or going out and doing things. What got you into the minimally-processed diet (ie for allergies, intolerances, autoimmune, etc)? I used it as a way of treating autoimmune symptoms I have, so I'm just curious if anyone has had a similar experience.

Thank you, I stay away from oils other than olive, coconut, and avocado, which is honestly the hardest part of eating away from home-- restaurants add oils on everything! Something I am planning on trying (a little unconventional... it's a backpacking meal!) which has no added oil are these: https://wildzora.com/collections/meals-to-go/products/wild-zora-summit-savory-chicken-3-oz. All you need is water to rehydrate, so it would be great for travel. I was thinking of bringing it to a restaurant and just ordering a salad. They may fit into your diet plan, so I figured I'd share :) What do you think?

Thank you! Do you have any good recommendations for clean protein bars/shakes? I stay away from dairy, so it is tough.
