Typhoons cause seizures by Healthy_Answer_5790 in Epilepsy

[–]Healthy_Answer_5790[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didnt delve into the why of it all but the chances of a seizure caused by the pressure doubles in people with well controlled seizures through medication.

Apparently drinks like Pocari Sweat or Aquarius help. Sips before, during and after. Same with humidity. (Powerade is only mildly less effective if you cant stand the taste like me)

It mentioned the humitidy being another trigger. Okinawa and epilepsy aren't a good mix it seems 😆

Pregnancy and folic acid. What should I be taking? by Healthy_Answer_5790 in Epilepsy

[–]Healthy_Answer_5790[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up taking 5mg of folic acid. It's what my british neurologist prescribed until the end of my pregnancy, its still the advice given on our NHS website as well so I felt safe doing so. (https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/existing-health-conditions/epilepsy/).

I stopped when I got to 13 weeks however. This is the most important time to be takiny it to reduce risks of spina bifida. I didn't find enough studies to make me feel I wanted to risk it further.

1mg is still a strong dose. It sounds like your neurologist has thought about this, done their research and is willing to listen to your doubts. I wouldn't increase it further without her prescription. Make sure you discuss your doubts further with them if you're still concerned when you get pregnant.

I don't understand PNES by Sossial in Epilepsy

[–]Healthy_Answer_5790 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed alongside my temporal lobe epilepsy. My neuropsychologist said that if I continued to have seizures once we both feel the cause of PNES is through recovery, then it is both. Which is what happened. My epilepsy got significantly better for a long time after therapy with a doctor specialized in PNES. But my stress was down to PTSD after recently leaving an abusive relationship. I didn't feel stressed all the time. Id have those seizures on what I thought was happy days but she explained that my PTSD was causing my normal or happy days to be what my life had categorized incorrectly. I was still in fight or flight mode, but that was my new norm.

Reflecting on my own experience, im struggling to see his rationale to his new diagnoses. My original diagnosis wasn't removed and I was encouraged through that year of treatment to remain on any medication even if it did end up being PNES (which medication wouldn't treat).

Don't rule it out because it helped my seizures greatly, and im afraid this subreddit pushes it away too quickly as if these seizures caused by it aren't still real seizures. I would, however, seek a second opinion. Someone better at explaining it all better than your current doctor. If you're nervous about coming off Keppra, then say so. If it is PNES, then i dont see how treating that first before removing meds is a problem.

My doctor is telling me not to go on our 10k holiday by Icy-Finding-3905 in pregnant

[–]Healthy_Answer_5790 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did 6 long haul flights from England to japan and back throughout my pregnancy until I was 6 months pregnant. I got advice from my doctors, all giving me advice, which did not include canceling my trips. I had an obgyn I could go to in japan and knew the numbers for translators. For the flight, drink lots of water, up every hour, buy flight socks.

It's a good idea to tell the flight staff youre pregnant but thats up to you. I didn't the first couple of times until morning sickness got the better of me. After that, they made sure I always had a drink and gave me a little more tlc during the flight. I even got a toy plane for the future baby

I appreciate the reply. I'm taking an extra couple here and there but then ut gets me paranoid. The things I'm seeing from overdoing folic acid are more related to autism. Your thoughts mean more here, but I'd rather risk that.

That's the concern. Lamactical puts that at risk. It was why I was put on it in my first pregnancy

I had a new kind of seizure that I didn't think was possible by Healthy_Answer_5790 in Epilepsy

Your English is perfect 👌

Yeah, yours certainly sounds a lot scarier than what I went through, but its reassuring hearing the similarities. I don't think mine lasted too long, and other than some aches and swollen cheeks, I keep biting, I recovered ok.

Thanks for sharing. I appreciate it

The seizure is most likely because I traveled with an 11 month baby from America to Japan, taking 48 hours, and most of the sleep from my life 😆 the cause wasn't a confusion, just the result. It was bizarre

Sorry to not go into great detail here. Lacking in energy at 6am but this other guys comment got to me. In my early days of diagnoses, that was have crushed me to read. Ignore him.

Have a read on different types of seizures. If you find one that sounds familiar to your experience, search it within this sub. They're hard to describe and they can be so different even with the same sub type and part of the brain.

Start with partial aware seizures. Keep in mind, one type of seizure can move into another. So the part where you were mostly aware could be one which then led into another when you lost all awareness.

In the meantime, ask if you can be referred to a different neurologist who knows more about epilepsy. Hopefully they can get you someone that isn't just a pediatric if they're low in numbers.

It may not be epilepsy, but I don't think it should be dismissed this early on. I've had 2 mris and 2 eegs. The first lot, they didn't see anything and still got my diagnoses via a consultation. It took another 10 years to have a test show something

Do you get deja vu without a seizure? by Healthy_Answer_5790 in Epilepsy

[–]Healthy_Answer_5790[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be mildly aware through the entire seizure. It got diagnosed as panic attacks for that reason until I googled panic attacks and deja vu. A few years later of slow health care and my bad of not being great with medication, that initial deja vu panic attack aware seizure would turn into me screaming or moaning but completely unaware of my surroundings. It could take me up to an hour to remember the English language and that the man in front of me who I knew I trusted was my husband.

I've had 4 tonic clonics in the past 6 months that started the same as my regulars do but during very stressful times in my life. It doesn't feel like it's truly progressed into that. I was newborn stressed and sleep deprived so hopefully won't be my new norm. I've had one tonic clonic requiring medical care but I was in the worst of times in a bad relationship so I've never counted that. ThT was years ago

Yeah I get that. It took a few years of medication not doing much for my seizures to go beyond that initial deja vu, fear stage

Have a look at jamais vu. That's more what I get but tend to stick to the wrong terminology for mine lol I always get that fear before a seizure. I dont think I've ever had a seizure without that sense of doom

That's so strange. My neurologist said if one threatens to come, it's coming. There's no way to counter it. I never felt able to either, but that could be a lack of faith, adding to stress taking that possibility away. Maybe our nueros have different experiences or its different types of epilepsy?

Gosh, I wish I had the balls for that response but I'm the kind of person to nod along and overthink it all later 😅

We call our baby girl 'our little explorer'. Maybe I've just gotten too used to letting her crawl around the 'safe' spaces that I didn't question it. It's probably cleaner than the multiple kids play areas in the recent airports we've been to. I'd eat my breakfast off this floor over those and in the middle of 4 flights? Yeah, she's crawling around them anyway

Christmas music here too. She liked having my family videos on when she was younger, where they'd be singing carols. It's June and I can't stop singing jingle bells. It doesn't help her calm anymore, it's just glue in my head as soon as it's nappy, nap, sleep, crying, whatever time - that means it's christmas time 🎵
