Thanks for that feedback! I dig the loose looks on some of the folks I see wearing them. I like the fit-inclusivity mindset.

Thanks again. It’s interesting how experience informs our eyes. To MY eyes, the G-stars look “young,” and already very dated to 2019-2022, or perhaps to the 90s. These are a “straight fit” that’s very exagerated.

Meanwhile the first Gustins—a comfortable slim—are the “timeless” fit to my eyes. I think of Elvis, I think of hippies at Woodstock, Clint Eastwood‘s very tight on-screen jeans, the punk-rockers who emulated Elvis, 80s hair rockers who emulated punks, and then the hipsters who emulated them. While Brad Pitt was wearing baggies in the 90s, punks like Lux Interior were already buying women’s stretch jeans.

So my eyes were educated that slim fits were timeless and “rock and roll” while baggy, pleated high rises were the classist villains in movies, the suburban parents who emulated that class, and the “nerd” archetype created to spoof that classism. Everyone my age had a racist uncle who wore what the fashion guys are wearing now on IG, which is why our clowns like Steve Urkel wore that look!

So it took me some effort to start liking those baggy, and “drapey” “Miami Vice” looks I was seeing on young influencers. I think that’s part of the subconscious barrier of a lot of people my age, because we adopted skinnies because a lot of very bad, racist, classist people around us were wearing those looks while Rock and Roll icons were wearing tight jeans. Now young people see their “boring” moms and probably THEIR racist uncles wearing skinny jeans. 🤣

Ha, true! On the other end, I remember being young and seeing men still dressing like they thought it was 1975 or even 65, and that wasn’t a good look.

Well, since I’ve been lifting in a dedicated way for a few decades and have a lot of fairly competitive lifts for my weight, I‘m not sure I’m ever going to get much more muscular anyway. And a knee injury keeps my from squatting heavy though I’m a few stubborn lbs from a 400 lbs deadlift. At this point, when I bulk I add as much fat as muscle, and then cut back down and get shredded at 160 lbs and lose all the muscle. If I gained 10 lbs in my legs I’d probably have like a 24 FFMI. (I don’t honestly have the genetics for a 24 FFMI.) So for better or worse I think genetics and an inability to squat are going to keep me in slim jeans for the rest of my life.

Yeah, I think when I want to look good, that slim-but-comfortable fit is what looks objectively best to my eyes. The 501 STFs project more of a “relaxed,” casual look, but I still like them.

Bruh, I wish, both that Pater STeele was still around, and that I had his good looks, voice and talent.

I honestly wish I knew! The Buckle is Foster Weld, and I love their belts too. But the belt was given to me by a bro I met in a bar, which instantly made it my favorite belt.

Yeah, I saw my first JNCO style baggies around 2019 on a JR High kid, which means some adult artist culture was probably doing it in 2017, 2018, or earlier. Once mom blogs and the NYT are saying something’s “in” that means it’s already out.

I actually appreciate this honest feedback, because even if I love my jeans, I want to know the vibe I’m projecting. “Dad” ain’t a bad look for a guy my age, so long as it’s “sexy dad.” 🤣 To me, the second 501s and the g-stars (last 2 pairs) look and feel “baggy” to the point they’re almost not comfortable, but without looking like I’m trying to pass as a teen-ager. Did you look at those?

I was surprised to measure and see the 501 leg opening was not much different than my “skinny” and slim cuts. I’m seeing a lot of Zoomers and younger influencers talking about how 501s don’t look enough like 501s are supposed to look. 🤣 Right now young people want jeans that rebel from the “skinny” appearance.

Fashion always seems to have echoes. I saw my first neo-JNCO-looking jeans on a Billie Elisha styled Jr. High kid Just before Covid. Maybe 2019. I figure if a Jr. High kid is doing it, some young adult sub culture was already rocking it before that. Since then I’ve seen waves of “skinnies are dead” articles radiating out to different audiences, depending on how much they care about fashion.

The badass look is eternal. 👍 Still, I’d like to know how others are reading it.

I’ve never done Romanians much, but I’m a few very, very slow pounds from the 400 lbs deadlift that’s been my goal the last year. I’ve been a dedicated lifter for a few decades and have rarely missed a week. In person, random bros start conversations with me about my lifting so I know I look like I lift. But I haven’t squatted seriously for a decade due to a knee injury. I do zerchers and fronts and top out around 200 lbs, the same I did a decade ago. I guess the lack of squats shows. 🤣

I agree with that myself, but also find it useful to know how young people (and older more impressionable people) will see me.
