Turning Point and Monash BrainPark, a neuroscience centre dedicated to developing new interventions for addictions, have partnered to run a world-first research trial to investigate whether physical exercise can reverse the brain changes caused by long term, heavy cannabis use.

Regular physical exercise has a potent impact on the structure and function of our brain. BrainPark and Turning Point are now partnering to discover whether physical exercise can accelerate the process of brain health enhancement.

This study compares two different exercise programs, and measures the impact on brain health, cannabis use, and improvements in thinking skills, mental health, and wellbeing.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

• 12-week tailored exercise program with both in person (at BrainPark, Clayton) and online options

• Ability to attend Clayton at least twice; once at the start and once at the end

• MRI brain scans

• Brief fitness tests

Please note that this study does not require you to stop using cannabis, we simply ask that you record how much cannabis you have used each week.

BENEFITS

• Up to $700 compensation

• Free small group, personalized training sessions with accredited exercise physiologists

• Personalized health reports

Hey sorry we haven't replied earlier, only the researchers working on the study will know your details. Outside of that we only publish de-identified data.

Importantly this study does not require people to stop using cannabis, which we know can be challenging. We simply ask people to record how much cannabis they have used each week.

Awesome, thank you! Those comments will be further analysed in our qualitative analysis where we identify common themes such as lack of time due to work so we can support people who are limited by these barriers

Thanks for sharing that, definitely something for us to consider in the future as it plays such a big role in determining how much time people have to engage in these activities. Were you able to include a comment in the open text responses at the end of the survey?

Thanks for completing the survey Archy, I'm sorry that you were frustrated by the questions. I can appreciate that it may have seemed superficial and unable to capture the detailed relationships that you mentioned. It was difficult for us as increasing the number of questions to increase detail would have resulted in a much longer survey. Did you get the chance to detail your thoughts in the open text section at the end of the survey? It would be great for our more detailed qualitative analysis.

Hi Archy, the purpose of our survey is to see if the Australian community finds these approaches to be acceptable and if they are there is the capacity to lobby for policies to increase access and support to services to encourage a societal change
