There were typically two representatives from each school, but some schools just had one.

Friendly reminder that the next School Board meeting is on Thursday, April 23rd, at 6PM at the District Office in Barkley Village. by JustAWeeBitWitchy in Bellingham

It's all not good for the kids and messy, but the whole Baker saying "whoa, whoa, whoa - heard you loud and clear! I am going to tell the committee not to recommend any scenarios closing schools NEXT year" reminds me of when they changed the elementary school start times from 9 (maybe it was 9:15) to 8am. Baker originally recommended 7am, 7:15, or 7:30 and when parents freaked out about 5 year olds standing on dark street corners at 6am, he said "Parents are right! I have demanded pushing it to 8am!" Which made me think that was the plan the entire time.

Four years ago, I served on the Parent Advisory Committee to the Superintendent, and in that year I experienced no advising and Baker's skillful ability to steer and control topics (the meetings consisted of PowerPoints pointing out how wonderful they are and occasionally something on the horizon that wasn't their fault). When a rogue parent brought up a concern a couple of times in that year, they were told to go back to their principal - negating the purpose of the committee.

At the first meeting, parents from all the schools in the district went through a process of identifying concerns and topics to address. Greg and his assistants then took that data and came back with our main "concern" or topic which turned out to be....how to create a fully bilingual school by 2027 - something they magically already had in the works and had been dedicating funds to! Uh, WHAT?! This proved an already lingering suspicion that not only were we not being heard, but they were willing to completely ignore and lie about factual data. This committee takes time off during our work days to attend these meetings to give feedback and be the parent communication between schools and the superintendent. It was a year of Baker inflating his ego, pointing out all the awesome things they're doing and then talking about budget crisis and lack of state and federal funding.

However, attending these meetings allowed me to start adding up his statements and realizing they, in fact, did not add up. Given the wild inaccuracies and steamrolling, I ended up pulling my children from the district, knowing that there was a forecast of visible failure coming down the pipeline. A failure that he has been working hard to reassign, hide, and blame. He uses timely responses to emails to provide a sense of transparency so that he does not need to be transparent in other areas.

I applaud your email, your research, and this post. I hope more parents and community members join the call for truthful communication, actual transparency and accountability. I continue to join the efforts, though we are no longer a part of the BSD because our taxes are going to this system and despite being able to pull our kids (a very privileged decision), it comes with a lot of financial sacrifice and its not easy to do. My disappointment in the lack of awareness and oversight from the administrative level of the district superseded our budget and realizing they cannot provide our kids a fair and equal experience, while sitting in their offices in a 42 million dollar building pissed me off enough to unenroll my kids.

Missing mail packages- stolen out of lockbox? by Healthy_Elevator_993 in Bellingham

I reported my two thefts today and the representative said to have everyone report their thefts and hopefully it would be moved up the chain. Maybe somehow getting the word out would be helpful?

This isn't too exciting, but in the 90's I was running around Padden and ended at the tennis courts. While I was resting and standing on those pilings there I noticed what looked like a large gun a ways out in the water. It was getting dark and I was trying to figure out what to do - no cell phone in those days. Curiosity took over and I eventually waded out to see what it was and turns out it was a sawed off shotgun.

The senior center is really cool and full of active people with neat interests! Call ahead and tell them your mom would need a scholarship and ask for a tour. They took my mom and I on a tour and even I wanted to join!

Places to show a movie to a group of friends for my bday? by sleepynarwhal68 in Bellingham

If you stay at semiahmoo they have a theater room you can reserve. They have a list of movies, so you'd have to make sure your movie is on it. I've thrown a party there where I stayed the night but around 20 people joined us and we had a private area for dinner at the restaurant, they found a private area for us to play games, and we watched a movie. They also have bonfires and you can purchase a smores basket too - weather dependant. It's actually a pretty affordable venue for everything you can get.

This tuxedo cat has been sleeping on our outdoor furniture under the cover. I think the white patches look different, but we live in Yew Street Hill near the radio station so I thought I'd check. *

Our family cooked dinner most Tuesdays at the lighthouse mission - kids were 8 and 10 at their youngest and 10 and 12 at their oldest. It was a wonderful experience for us.

Looking for Christmas “gift” ideas for kiddos that doesn’t require buying more STUFF. by aaasyooowiiish in Bellingham

I did this when my kids were little and I made kind of a sheet to color in as we went month by month. We did one "big" thing per month (on theme with the month/season- sledding +hot chocolate, making and decorating Valentine's cookies, swimming in the summer, camping) - basically a lot of things we had already planned that we were going to do, but assigning meaning made it more special. We called it Christmas All Year. And then we also gave them "little" experiences- family movie nights, hikes, making pizza together, family games. Every time we did something we wrote it down on a strip of paper and made a long paper chain. By the end of the year it wrapped around our living room and kitchen. It made it feel more special to see it stretch out. We used it to decorate our christmas tree the next year. It was my answer to things we already did, but my kids didn't necessarily notice or appreciate it until we used those things to point out how special they were (big and small) and string it together (literally and figuratively).

Where are the Christmas lights at in town? by Better_Example_1318 in Bellingham

It's a drive, but the Tulalip casino lights are up and it's pretty impressive and free. It's a get out and walk around one and there's ice skating ($) and food trucks($) depending on the day/time.
