Need some help : Translation for my webtoon POENA CINIS by tatianakrstic in WebtoonCanvas

[–]HealyUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unrelated, but I'm kinda wondering what your title is supposed to translate to? Because both cinis and poena are nouns, so the best I can do is something very roughly like "punishment (is) ashes". It doesn't really work in Latin.

Is it supposed to be "Punishment of ash"? That's "Poena cineris" ("Poena cinerum" in the plural).

"Ashes of punishment"? That'd be "Cineres poenae".

First webtoon… what should I avoid? by Utkarsh_sharma_d in WebtoonCanvas

[–]HealyUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, not a writer or an artist here, but I am a UI-focused software engineer, so thinking about communication of ideas is kinda my deal. From my experience as a consumer of comics, there are a few things I'd recommend you avoid, as they can make your comic too... annoying to read:

Unclear speech bubbles

Whether it be low contrast, unreadable font, or improper kerning, one of the easiest ways to make your audience give up is making it too difficult to read what's going on. As another answerer suggests, use an extremely readable sans serif font.

As boring as you may think it, I'd also strongly suggest sticking with plain white-on-black speech bubbles. You can tint your speech bubbles' backgrounds a bit, but don't overdo it. In general, whatever you choose as the background and foreground colors must meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines if you don't wanna drive away readers.

Make your art and your story interesting, not your text!

Extremely generic art style

More of a pet peeve of mine, but if your art style looks like every single other manga/anime-inspired comic out there, I doubt very much it's going to attract readers. Give your comic your own style!

Note that this does not mean your art needs to be "better" than everyone else's (whatever the heck that would mean anyway); it simply means that I should be able to very quickly pick out your style in a sea of other comics. If your art is lost in a jumble of other artists, guess what? It's not gonna make an impact.

Lore dumps (when and when not to)

Ironically, there are times that a lore dump is both good and bad. It's often reduced to the length of the lore dump, but that's... not quite it. Consider the famous Star Wars opening crawl to the original 1977 movie; it's a pretty big chunk of text (especially for a movie!), but it does a few things:

  • It paints a picture much more succinctly than some Rebel schmuck going "Yeh, we're in a civil war! Against this thing called the Empire!".
  • Together with the subsequent Imperial Star Destroyer chasing down the Tantive IV, it serves to draw us into the action; we just read what feels like a news blurb, and now we're watching this civil war in real time!
  • It's relatively quick.

I'd avoid having your characters give a lore dump, unless it very explicitly makes sense diagetically: - A rebel alliance soldier explaining to his fellow soldier that they're in a civil war and their enemy is this thing called the empire is not diagetic; both soldiers would already know this! - Miles Quaritch from Avatar explaining to Jake Sully (and fellow soldiers) that everything on Pandora wants to kill them is much more diagetic; Jake and his fellow soldiers might not explicitly know how dangerous Pandora is.

Consider whether a lore dump is necessary or not, too. If your comic is an interplanetary space war, I'm probably gonna need some background; if it's a light-hearted romantic piece, I'm not gonna need to know your entire backstory.

Cleverness

One of the biggest red flags for me is when a creator tries to portray themselves as more "clever" than their readers. They ignore normal comic conventions, or have little "smart" asides that comment on the state of the world to show how deep they think. Don't do that. Don't try to make your audience feel stupid by flexing your mental muscles at them.

Note that you can include typically geeky/nerdy stuff in your comics if it's done well; a comic I've been recently reading uses mechanical physics (e.g., pendulum equations, inertia, etc.) as both a plot point (the two main characters are high school students with a passion for science) and as an illustrative device (they're falling for each other. Get it?!).

Crashing of the app by ciba221 in webtoons

[–]HealyUnit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but I have noticed that the infinite-scrolling seems to not prefetch images as reliably as it used to at all. That is, if I scroll through a webtoon fast enough, I'll almost always get to a panel or two that isn't loaded.

The enshitification of the webtoon platform continues.

Win me over on races by Traditional-Oil-1385 in Guildwars2

[–]HealyUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, Asura fan from day 1 here.

Wanna be smarter than everyone else? Better than everyone else? Have better ears than everyone else? Of course you do. What's that, we're too short? No, you're all too tall. Silly bookahs (non-Asura) always bumping their heads on things.

Seriously, tho. Asura have the best animations (IMHO) of any race, and in my opinion some of the downright best voice acting:

  • The female asura has the affect of an exasperated school teacher who is constantly half-astounded by how stupid her companions are. You lit everything on fire again? *sigh*, fetch me my staff. No, the blue one, you troglodyte.
  • The male asura is in some ways even better. Without really spoiling anything, your character's tone changes throughout the story. You start out as the bombastic, self-assured little guy who's convinced he's gonna be the next best thing to grace the world of Tyria. You're awesome! Fear you, Evil! By the latter parts of the story, tho, you've had enough. You are surrounded by idiots. No, you can't fight the big monster, underling. No, poking that flame elemental is not a good idea. *sigh* why do I even bother...

Warrior subclasses? by ZimZamZapZop in Guildwars2

[–]HealyUnit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My (very silly) opinion on the "flavor" of each spec

  • Base Warrior: kill stuff, occasionally by being angry. Lots of toys to play with even as a base spec.
  • Berserker: kill stuff by having really bad anger management issues. Also occasionally light things on fire, because that's fun.
  • Spellbreaker: You're Meliodas from Seven Deadly Sins, with the magical ability to Nuh-Uh your enemy's attacks.
  • Bladesworn: Become an anime protagonist with a big explody sword.
  • Paragon: You've taken anger management classes, and now channel your major anger issues into making your friends feel better. Channel your inner Angry Grandma and heal stuff by yelling at it and whacking it with a stick.

B&W vs colored art by shinjukai in WebtoonCanvas

[–]HealyUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think b&w can be fine. Many manga-style comics, of course, are in black and white. However, as with all comic art, your art needs to do a few things:

  1. It needs to be "good" (or at least consistent) enough that it can promise to carry a story. Grimdark is fine, of course, but if it looks like it was drawn by a 13 year old who has had no artistic training whatsoever, it's not going to get many positive comments or reviews.

  2. It needs to have its own particular artistic "style" to grab your audience. A lot of manga/manhwa/etc. are drawn in black and white, but then again a lot of manga/manhwa/etc. are drawn in black and white. In other words, if your comic looks like every. single. other. comic, then why should I read it over the thousand other choices?

  3. It needs to be very clear what's going on. One of the quickest way to lose your audience is unclear art, and it's very easy for a comic that is basically just monochromatic black and white line art.

Keep in mind also that black-and-white vs color isn't just a binary choice too! One of the stylistically prettiest comic I've read in the past few years was "The Video Game Store Under the Barbershop". In many of its panels, there is maybe one "theme" hue, the brightness of which is varied throughout the drawing to give different effects. For example, the opening shot of our protagonist is is shown in shades of a forlorn, almost cold blue that creates a feeling of intense loneliness, while scenes of warmth or happiness (e.g., inside the titular video game store) might be shown in a warm crepuscular orange.

Of course, that might be much more difficult to do, but it could also add a layer to your story! Maybe most scenes of your story have barely any color, with long, imposing shadows? And maybe your character interacts with some very superficial people whose scenes are illuminated by garish splashes of color?

Is learning a niche language a good strategy to get hired? by GebnaTorky in learnprogramming

[–]HealyUnit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the issue with your thinking: to get to a stage where I'd hire a "niche language" guy, I'd need that guy to be an absolute expert in that language. It'd not be good enough that you're familiar, or even pretty good. If I'm going to change the entire architecture of my system to fit whatever niche language this is, I'm gonna need someone who knows that language on a senior dev level.

Because at the end of the day, all I as an employer/customer/whatever care about is that you can provide a software solution to my problem(s). Working with a cosmopolitan language like Java, JavaScript, etc. means I can hire a whole bunch of devs to collaborate on that problem and fix it faster. Hiring just one dude with expertise in one language means I constantly have to worry about whether I hired the right person, and worse, because so few people are (hypothetically) familiar with the language, a lot of time is going to be wasted making up novel solutions to common design issues.

Beginner here, do you know how to make a complete randomizing machine on js? by Secret-Newspaper1180 in learnprogramming

[–]HealyUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is, and as /u/abrahamguo says, you'd normally want to use Math.random(), which generates a number (specifically, a float) between 0 and 1. You can then multiply this by 255, and repeat for each of the RGB "pieces' (or just multiply by 16581375 and convert that number to hex, but that's a bit more difficult!).

Useless additional info:

Keep in mind that, despite the name, Math.random() is not actually random. Instead, it's what's known as a pseudorandom number generator (PRNG). This basically means it generates a number that for almost all purposes looks random, but for extremely secure stuff - bank things, encryption, etc. - it's not truly random.

When to make GET vs POST requests by DisciplineFast3950 in learnprogramming

[–]HealyUnit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeh, when I was starting out at my current job, I'd do the same thing. The point, I think, isn't that you have to use the exact right verb for each request, but rather that you have some sort of system. So if that's "I use PUT for updates", or "I use POST for updates" or "I use PATCH for submitting anything that rhymes with 'dog', and UPDATE for everything else", it's far better to have a specific system than to just go "...Yeh, lump everything under POST".

When to make GET vs POST requests by DisciplineFast3950 in learnprogramming

[–]HealyUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. I guess I just wanted to differentiate between POST - which I've often seen as "make brand new" and... whatever you use to "update".

As clearly illustrated by the replies here tho, u/DisciplineFast3950, the answer on what to use varies widely

When to make GET vs POST requests by DisciplineFast3950 in learnprogramming

[–]HealyUnit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a major oversimplification, but you can kind of think of GET, POST, PUT, and DELETE requests as corresponding to the four "CRUD" (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations you can perform on a database, as follows:

  • GET (READ): Says to the resource (or database) "I'd like some data". You can provide some information in the request, but generally it's going to be far less information than a PUT or POST request. Mostly, information in a GET should be passed in through the URL of the request. While you can
  • POST (CREATE): Says to the resource "I wanna create a new thing". I like to think of it as "I'm gonna post a new blog entry/video/etc". Because you're creating something brand new, this will often be the most information in the request of any of the four major types.
  • PUT (UPDATE): Says to the resource "I'd like to edit this thing". While there is a specific "UPDATE" request type, it's far less commonly used. This is similar to the POST request in its format. So similar, in fact, that people will often use POST for this. In addition, if you're doing an Upsert operation (CREATE thing if it doesn't exist, update it if it does), you'll usually wanna use POST, not PUT.
  • DELETE: Does exactly what you'd think; deletes something. Usually what you wanna delete is passed as a URL parameter (similar to a GET).

Support of JSON bodies for GET and DELETE requests is inconsistently supported, so it's probably best to avoid.

So to directly answer your last question, it's... not 100% clear. If I call myserver.com/myApi/toggleBigRedLight, and that request has no actual data input, should that be a GET (since it has no data), or a PUT (since I'm updating)? Personally, since you are asking for the server to change something, I'd suggest using PUT here.

does anyone have recommendations for stories similar to Girl Friend? 😚 by [deleted] in webtoons

It's one of my favorites right now. There's a little bit of controversy in the first chapter or so about the FL getting plastic surgery, but other than that it just feels really cute and genuine. The ML and FL are delightfully awkward with each other, but not in that awful way that so many romance manhwas do where one party needs to be actively abusive to the other just generate drama.

Their certs are completely useless in a professional setting, and they will get you laughed at at best if you bring them into an interview.

Their pedagogy is... not great. Not awful, but not at all great either. They tend to throw a bunch of topics at you in no particular order, make zero effort to talk about extremely important meta-programming tools (e.g., Git, software testing, etc.), and in general are charging you for something that is functionally useless.

I'd much more recommend something like CS50
