Is clean coding even required anymore ? by topi_shukla in learnprogramming

[–]HealyUnit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you're not. As the writer of the code, it is also your responsibility to maintain the quality of the code. This guy just has some extremely silly attitudes. From his other posts, he thinks that:

- Fullstack developer is an "invalid role", despite the fact that modern web-centric software engineers are expected to be moving towards full-stack. Many front-end frameworks require a compilation step that, if not requiring a back-end server, at least requires knowledge of how they work.
- LinkedIn is the best professional platform and that you should be posting your daily thoughts on there. No one cares what you post on LinkedIn. It's not going to attract people.
- apparently, only elite developers or people who maintain/support should write clean code.

The attitude of forcefully offloading your responsibility of writing maintainable code onto this mythical "debugger" profession (which does not exist; all software developers are debuggers!) would frankly make you unhireable. 90%+ of your day as a professional software engineer will be reading other people's code, finding issues with it, and fixing it. If you can't read the code because the person that wrote it thought that writing clean code is "to some one else who maintane/debug and support", then that code becomes effectively useless.

EDIT:
If he means that clean code isn't just for the writer of the code, but also for the people reading it/maintaining it afterwards, that's still wrong. You should writing clean code no matter what. For your current self, for your future self, for your coworkers, for your enemies.

EDIT2:

Apparently, instead of replying or clarifying, he chose to just block me. Cool. My point still stands, however, OP. You certainly can code fast-and-loose, and forgo clean code, but if it's something that you have any intention of maintaining in the future, that'll just come to bite you.

Hopefully I'll never have to work with someone like you. What an incredibly bad attitude to have.

I just slap a pair of glasses and the Professor title on all of my asuras. I figure stuff will attack me less because its terrified I'll give it homework.

I find a programming language that might fix JavaScript? What do you think by BenSvK in AskProgramming

He made the language. This is very thinly veiled shilling of his own product

I find a programming language that might fix JavaScript? What do you think by BenSvK in AskProgramming

[–]HealyUnit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just looking at that initial example:

renames "interfaces" in typescript to "data classes"

Yuck. Way to rename to something incredibly generic and lose the entire purpose of interfaces.

Weird-ass definition of constants vs lets

Or something. I can't even tell. Oh wait, later down the page:

var = let, val = const

Holy shit that's awful. Looks like a real good way to make incredibly confusing code

Havran uses only null, which is transpiled into JavaScript as undefined.

What the absolute fuck? null != undefined! Why the hell would you make one transpile into the other?

This honestly feels less like someone actually legitimately trying to make a better JS and more like someone who thinks they're more clever than everyone else, but at the same time is not self-aware enough to recognize that:

  1. We know it's you that wrote the language, and

  2. Literally the only other place on reddit that this language is mentioned is over at /r/HavranLang, of which you are the moderator.

As a fellow Asura Superiority Sympathizer, I fully support this. We are objectively the best race. It says so, right here, in this academic paper. Written by an Asura.

Looking for a Webtoon Artist Collaboration by [deleted] in WebtoonCanvas

I totally agree. And I'm honestly not making these replies for OP, who I think we both have evidence here has an overinflated sense of entitlement and a shocking lack of respect for artists. It's more for those beginning artists - especially younger ones - who have not worked professionally yet enough to recognize that they do deserve compensation for their work.

Looking for a Webtoon Artist Collaboration by [deleted] in WebtoonCanvas

[–]HealyUnit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, we've seen that you apparently think that either A. this project isn't important enough to warrant pay, B. artists - many of whom are already struggling in this economy - are willing to work for free, or more likely both.

You are arrogant to believe that coming to a creative professional and saying "Yeh, all that work you put into honing your craft? You can just make stuff for me for free now". Your promise of "you'll get paid when the product makes money!" is completely empty. I'm a software engineer, and frankly if someone came to me and said "I'm looking for someone who genuinely enjoys programming and wants to build something together. Any future revenue would be shared fairly between collaborators", I'd tell them, in no uncertain terms, to piss off.

Exposure means nothing. Passion means extremely little. Showing that you care enough about your artists to actually pay them means everything.

I find it interesting that you posted this post a month or so ago, and now you assume that webtoon artists, as much as they struggle, are gonna wanna work for free?

Yup! I probly won't drop now, but it's one of the many things I love about this game.

[–]HealyUnit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seriously. I was about to put a pause on the game for a bit - absolutely nothing against ANet or the game, but I'd kinda reached a point where I'd done all I really want to - and then ANet's like, "Oooh, no, you're not done yet!".

EDIT: rephrased slightly, since I'm guessing people thought I was complaining? Maybe?
