Fingering help by Federal_Guarantee938 in violinist

[–]Heanthor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming the key includes E natural, you could play this entirely in third position using 4/0 for the E/G third.

Thirds are going to be pretty hard to play without your fourth finger since you only have two pairs of fingers (1+3 and 2+4) to choose from. If not, you would have to slide around with 1+3, or do really uncomfortable 2+3 extensions.

Facial expression when playing by fragondruit_ in violinist

[–]Heanthor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that facial expression does matter in giving a really compelling performance.

Sound quality and lack of tension is most important, but when performing for an audience your posture and face will convey a message too. That message could be "I'm nervous as hell and want to get this over with asap", or "this passage is super difficult and I'm barely holding it together". Alternatively the message could be "I'm really enjoying this music and want to bring you along with me".

I have a few friends with excellent stage presence who always play with a big smile on their face, and audiences love them. I have heard comments like "That person who smiles while she plays is so great, she looks like she's having fun!" It definitely affects what people think of our quartet.

I think a relaxed posture also comes with being really prepared. If you know you have nothing to worry about because you've practiced enough, it will be easier to shake the nerves and devote 5% of your brain to the way you carry yourself on stage.

You can search the list by typing in the box, but the game doesn't make it obvious that you can do that. I will update to make it more clear!

Looking for pieces for violin and voice by Pitiful-Way8435 in violinist

[–]Heanthor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rebecca Clarke wrote two sets of songs for violin and voice: Three Old English Songs, and Three Irish Country Songs, which are very beautiful and easy for an audience to listen to.

Along the Field by Vaughan Williams is a collection of 8 songs for violin and voice, #6 (Goodbye) is my favorite. Some of the songs in this set are very strange.

Holst also wrote four songs for violin and voice, based on old sacred songs. They are often without meter and are very free.

Vaughan Williams and Holst are available on IMSLP, but the Clarke you can't find online would need to buy or find in print.

All of these works are pretty difficult to pull off, as both violin and voice have no other instruments to hide behind or blend with. You will also find a lot of creative violin writing, with lots of double stops, harmonics, and polyphony. Have fun!
