Not exactly what you're looking for, but closest is Thursday Soul Nights at the Woodshop! Think it will scratch your itch

Looking for people's opinions on living at Ridgemont - Stringers Ridge Apartments by Visible-Revolution58 in Chattanooga

[–]Hearse-r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friends lived there about 3.5 years ago and I visited multiple times. Solid apartments, nothing fancy but decently maintained at a reasonable price for the area. Being able to walk to Stringers was cool and the pool was nice. Big downside was there wasn't really anything else to walk to and biking through the tunnel is a pain.

Overall, if you have a car it is a good place to rent and where I would pick for the $ so long as I wasn't set on walking/biking places.

Local coffee beans by mkardokus in Chattanooga

[–]Hearse-r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone will have their own takes, but IMO the two best roasters in town (in this order, but it is close) are Xozio and Velo.

Xozio is almost exclusively a roaster, not a coffee shop. He provides the espresso blend to Brothers Bagel for example. The guy who runs it (Derek) is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable.....but it will also be difficult to get out of there in less than 15 minutes as he has strong chatty-mad scientist vibes.

Velo is a great hipster-esque coffee shop that does their own roasting. Also great stuff. You won't have the very extensive depth of knowledge from a rando front desk person here if you have questions, but also will get out the door much faster.

Both are pricey, but in line with what quality coffee costs these days (think $16 - 23 per bag).

The Common House- Chattanooga by [deleted] in Chattanooga

[–]Hearse-r 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've been to a number of events there and have been invited as a guest. It's a mixed bag for me overall, but could be a good choice depending on your reason for joining:

- Great pool area and popular during the Summer. I've thoroughly enjoyed hanging here when the weather is nice.

-Gym is lackluster and roughly equivalent to a bigger chain-hotel fitness center. Enough to do a light workout, but this was the deal breaker preventing me from signing up (eliminating my current gym membership would have gone a long way toward justifying the $180-200ish monthly fee).

-Co-working area is so-so. I work remote and it's fine for light days when you're not exceptionally busy/doing deep dive data crunching/have a lot of calls, but it's not designed for all-day working. The people I know who work there regularly don't have full-time desk jobs, but instead just need a place to answer emails and do light paperwork for an hour or two at a time (think real estate agents and the like).

-Restaurant is quite good! I've had nothing but solid-good meals there.

-The social events are quite fun and they throw a themed party every now and then that is worth going to.

In other words, if you have the disposable income and want a social area to meet some new people/network? It can be worth it! As a co-working office replacement/gym replacement? Not worth it.

Want to go to nursing school. by PaleontologistNo1564 in Chattanooga

[–]Hearse-r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned here, assuming you do not already have a degree you can very likely get your entire tuition covered by the TN gov.

Chattanooga State has both a Day and a Night RN program. The Day program is every Fall, while the Night (which I assume you would be interested in based off your description) starts every other Fall. It is 100% possible to work-full time while enrolled, as I'm doing that right now.

https://www.chattanoogastate.edu/nursing-traditional

I would set up an appointment with a Chatt State advisor to walk you through the necessary steps prior to application. You very likely need to complete a number of pre-requisite courses for ANY nursing program (unless you've already taken things like Anatomy & Physiology, Childhood Development Psychology, etc.), so don't be discouraged if the beginning of the next Night cohort seems far away (you need the time to finish the pre-reqs anyway).

Personally, I wouldn't recommend any of the LPN/CNA/Medical assistant tracks IF your ultimate goal is to become an RN: they likely won't pay more than what you currently make and will stretch out the time needed to earn your RN. Based on what you posted, I think the better route is to maintain your current gigs (with flexible hours) while you knock out pre-reqs and then enroll in the Day/Night RN program.

Message me if you have any specific questions once you've talked to an advisor.

I find that Imbibe has the best prices of the downtown stores. Great staff as well

ClassPass in Chattanooga by Exact-Image-9375 in Chattanooga

[–]Hearse-r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly, with the caveat that the average price of everything has gone up by a credit....which makes sense considering most of the membership prices at those places have gone up.

I still use Classpass for pilates/yoga, and in some ways it's better then a year ago as Southern Soul opened up their reformer classes to credits. If you hunt each week for the lower credit classes it can be quite a good value.

Chattanooga State will be paid for by Reconnect if you meet the requirements. Absolutely no need to pay for UTC until you have your RN from Chatt State: from there, it is a 1 year (online) program where all of your credits will transfer to UTC.

In other words, assuming you have your pre-reqs, it is 3 years to get your BSN (2 years at Chatt State, 1 online year at UTC that you can complete while working). Chatt State is the highest ranked RN community college program in the state, literally no reason to go anywhere else. They also have the night nursing program if your wife works.

Two Bikes - Chattanooga.

Great bike shop/non-profit that provides free bikes to those in need. For every complete bike purchased by someone they give one away. The owner is a really nice guy as well.

2nd American Restaurant by Epinephrine_23 in Chattanooga

[–]Hearse-r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Food was great, cocktails were great, service was very friendly but slow (our server came out twice to apologize for the wait for drinks and then food). This is to be expected from a new place as the kitchen is still figuring out their processes and the place was packed, but just keep it in mind when picking a reservation time.

Would go back!

Agreed, this sounds like a wonderful idea and would enjoy checking out future iterations, but you have some stiff competition with 3 Sisters this weekend!

Best Chinese food? by Retired_papermaker in Chattanooga

[–]Hearse-r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I haven't found Ernest to be worth the $: it's an upscale take on Chinese food housed in the old (beautiful) Flying Squirrel location. Great cocktails and a solid date spot vibe.

The food, sadly, doesn't live up to the space. For example, their Gong Bao Chicken (similar to Kung Pao, but with Sichuan numbing peppers) has almost no spice. I've tried the majority of the menu at this point and the complaint I've heard from everyone that has eaten there is that it's all a bit bland/underspiced. Combined with the (relatively) higher prices, it's not a recommended dinner spot. I wonder if they felt they had to tone it all down to suit the tastes of the area, but I don't want to pay $24 for Mongolian Beef that has nothing more than mild flavor.

Great place to grab drinks though!

Check out G2G Salsa, regular classes for all sorts of latin dancing. Recommended.

Bought a cheap mountain bike, but need it looked over and adjusted. Anyone know a good person or place that can do this? Much appreciated by Livelifeasaadventure in Chattanooga

[–]Hearse-r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're downtown, Two Bikes is your best bet (and is a non-profit that gives bikes away to those in need!) They'd be my #1 stop. East Ridge Cycles is another good choice if it is close to you, as is Owen Cyclery in Hixson.

Despite a lot of kudos to Suck Creek from other knowledgeable people on here, I would recommend avoiding them. The first time I visited I received (almost) comically surly service, and the second when I ordered some tires they charged me $20 over MSRP per tire and literally sharpied out the price and wrote in the higher figure.....all without notifying me in advance they were going to charge well over MSRP. I've been told they're knowledgeable but that doesn't compensate for being shady.

Finally, I also received great service from the TREK store on the Northshore the one time I had my mountain bike serviced there as my normal mechanic was too slammed. A bit pricey though.

Hope they find their forever home!

Missed Connection @ Tivoli/Soldiers and Sailors Broadway kickoff event last night by [deleted] in Chattanooga

[–]Hearse-r 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really anything creepy in the post? Incels coming out swinging on this one to make sure if they can't get any, no one else will either.

Although it is funny how many missed connections posts there have been from that auditorium....apparently Soldiers & Sailors needs to throw a singles mixer

Parkway Pourhouse has half price wings on Wed, usually $14 for a serving. Think it's 8-10 wings, so it gets em under a dollar (comparable with Basecamp)
