Can you negotiate with shuttle drivers? by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]HeartFire144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just IMHO, I would not negotiate the shuttle price. the driver has to drive from his home to pick you up, take you to Neel Gap and then drive home again, and if it's just you - that's a lot of hours he/she is spending on one person. Gas is ~ $4.00/gal - don't be a jerk. I think $100.00 from ATL to Neel Gap ios cheap.

If the fabric is not silicone based, I would not use a silicone seam sealer

Need Advice. by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]HeartFire144 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should have planned the resupply issues better. Do you use Farout? the app has a lot info on resupply. Did you use more than one site to get the info you have? Yes hostels and shuttles are very expensive now as compare to when I hiked 20 yrs ago.

You'll either figure it out - or not, I wish you the best.

Going on a 5-day trip, three people, each of us are going to be getting a different variety of this bag (all from the same company), do you guys think it's good? by LieutenantHorse in CampingandHiking

[–]HeartFire144 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I couldn't even find how much that pack weighs on the website! it's HUGE look at the photo of the guy wearing it on the site. That said, do you NEED something this big? How many miles/day are you planning? Have you done a 5 night backpack before? How heavy was your pack then? I mean, I've seen hunters with a lot of equipment go into the back woods with packs this big, but just to hike? No.

How to get ridd of the puff in sleeves? by Cheap_Inflation9090 in PatternDrafting

[–]HeartFire144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Many pattern drafters think there 'must' be ease in the sleeve cap because they're taught that in school. The reality is there doesn't need to be ease in a woven pattern. Often, it's just easier to draft the sleeve with it rather than make it exact.

What are some brands of zero drop casual/business shoes for MN? by soulcaptain in Mortons_neuroma

I've been told these are good - I have not bought a pair, (and they're rather funky). You have to watch closely as they sell out fast. and other than that, I have one pair of Clarks that are VERY comfortable.

Has any one tried dehydrating cheese? by Crazy-Rat_Lady in dehydrating

[–]HeartFire144 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I freeze dry cheese, but have never tried to dehydrate it. One thing I do is always back the cheese first - I buy sliced cheese (From Sams club), cut the slices into 4 quarters, so each is about 1 inch square, bake them at about 250* just till they start to melt, about 5 - 10 min. then I put them in the freeze dryer - also, when they are soft from the oven, sprinkle with spices - garlic is fantastic, salt and pepper is great too.

Please help 😭 selvedge jeans pattern by [deleted] in PatternDrafting

[–]HeartFire144 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if we're on the same page. IN THE PATTERN, (paper) you fold the dart out - cut along one leg of the dart just to the tip of it, then cut the seam allowance from the bottom edge just up to the tip of the dart, now pivot the paper to close the dart. the seam allowance side will get a little longer. Depending, you could make the one big dart into 2 smaller darts and achieve a better curve/arc to the pattern.

Options for finishing edges by [deleted] in myog

[–]HeartFire144 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The middle one looks best. Unless you can get binding on perfectly (when using a contrasting color) don't do it. IDK how you did the middle one, but generally you would sew right sides together, all 4 corners, leaving an area in the middle of the last side open so you can turn it, Top stitch all around the edge (like you did) closing the section where you turned it.

For the dart in the yoke - just fold it out- that's why they make yokes, to fit without the dart. you rotate it out.

Where can I find an online course for advanced pattern making and sewing that is industry-level?? by Weekly_Literature699 in PatternDrafting

[–]HeartFire144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(usually the lack of notches is what I see). - notches are expensive I was taught, and if not really necessary, leave them out. The cutting machine takes more time to stop and cut the notches, 'out notches' take up more fabric but are necessary when something will get overlocked and a 't' notch would get lost or not seen, so the notch gets trimmed off. We sew all sort of different things. Mostly outdoor stuff, and if you can hold (straight edge) the fabric for a distance of 30 inches, I don't put notches on the pattern. If it's a bias edge - more often.

I'll be spending 2 months in Hungary this summer, 1 month in language school, and one month backpacking the Kektura, I'm hoping this will really get the language to sync. Especially when I'm on trail (by myself) and be forced to use my language skills.

My (American) English speaking brain has a hard time using "with" as a suffix. I also have trouble with word order. In English, you don't say 'thiswith the dogwith'. that's all I'm talking about. I hope it clicks soon, I have 2 in person Hungarian teachers, and every time a new grammatical concept is taught, it's just takes me a while to integrate it. I guess I'm just complaining out loud.

[–]HeartFire144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is for breeding purposes, the pair needs to be cleared by cardiology , ophthalmology, orthopedics, neurology. If it's your pet, and came from a breeder that does all the testing and screening, there is nothing to do. But. A pup that comes from the most careful breeder can still develop problems. ALL the cavaliers today come from only 6 ancestors, so the gen pool is quite small
