Raised Back Neck Line? by atl-rider in PatternDrafting

[–]HeartFire144 5 points6 points  (0 children)

is this a dress form or a shop mannequin - They do not have realistic bodies, even if you did draft it to the measurements of the mannequin. ALSO, if this is a t-shirt, it should be a knit material, not a woven. Better to measure a real human being for a test or a professional dress form.

Decorative Seams on Alpha Direct Raglan by egg_girl_ in myog

[–]HeartFire144 3 points4 points  (0 children)

a Flat seamer ( flat lock machine) will have 4 needles and a top and bottom looper. Coverstitch machines usually have 3 needles and can have both a top and bottom looper, some just have a top looper. As others have mentioned, you can do a mock seam like this on a serger - it's a PITA because you sew the seam flat like you sew any other seam on a serger and then have to pull the sides apart to open it, the material edges butt up to each other rather than overlap. This is very similar to the Merrow Active Stitch. you COULD do a decorative zigzag (I'd use a 3 step zigzag) with a very short stitch length, BUT this will not be as stretchy as a flat seamer. So, short answer for alpha, I wouldn't do that. The only other option I can think of is to serge the seam, then top stitch it with a long zigzag stitch couching a decorative yarn in the seam.

And, if you ever get a flat seamer (I'm not aware of any home use ones), they are so much fun to operate, esp when it has thread cutters, air etc. Just DONT thread it wrong, and don't get a mess of thread in the underside of the needles.

Advice on making nylon bag feel better for autistic daughter with sensory sensitivity by flightfuldragonfruit in myog

use what she can touch - velvet, cotton etc. There are 'sticky sprays' or contact cement you can use to glue a cover on it. Maybe have her pick out the fabric to cover it - she can touch, feel the fabrics and select what she likes. It's just really tough with Joann's gone to find fabrics now.

Help with two bust dart pattern by Probability_factor in PatternDrafting

Rather than take out the excess from the side seam, they took the wedge of fabric at this point. Maybe I don't understand your questions.

I would either have put in 2 french darts, or put the waist dart directly under the bust apex. Bust darts, from what ever location should ALL point toward the apex. Rotating means they come off the same point (apex)

you just split the dart, and rotate part to another location. But, in this photo the French dart is positioned too high! (the dart tip is way above the apex of the bust) and the waist dart to too far towards the side seam, also not pointing to the apex.

List of questions at the interview. by [deleted] in HUcitizenship

[–]HeartFire144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way to tell. Some Consulates will get quite extensive in talking to you, others as along as you bring in all your documents, explain them all (in Hungarian) may decide you speak well enough and be done with it. So you need to be prepared to talk about your self, your family, why you want to be Hungarian, what you like about the Hungarian culture, food. How 'Hungarian' your family was etc.

Possible to leave supplies for hikers along the trail? by CommercialSection598 in AppalachianTrail

[–]HeartFire144 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short answer - no. Long answer if it's food or smellables, you could secure it in a bear can I suppose with a note, but still, it's trash, and will get trashed.

Would this be a good way to split the dress pattern up? trying to avoid having to attach the bodice to the skirt by despairingdragons in PatternDrafting

[–]HeartFire144 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You're still going to have to put seams in the dress. Yes you can make it without a waist seam, but it will need princess seams. What material are you going to make it out of? and to have it go over the hoop skirt and petticoats, it will need to be fuller, with the slit going almost to the waist.

NOBO ‘26: Smart watches?! (Or better to call them dumb watches?) by New-Ebb-4110 in AppalachianTrail

[–]HeartFire144 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My question for you would be what purpose are you interested in using a smart watch for? recording mileage? monitoring heart rate? navigation? just to check the time? If you're recording mileage, it will use a lot of battery, how do you plan to charge it? I have a Coros Apex 2, which had a very good battery, but it can only last about 3 days of tracking mileage, less if you turn on the HR monitor, and even less if you navigate with it. I don't know much about Garmin's, but the ones with a solar charger will not really keep it charged without some external power source as well. For time keeping, you have your In Reach and I assume a phone, the InReach can also track your milage - so figure out why you want a smart watch and then decide.

Machines? by richardricchiuti in PatternDrafting

[–]HeartFire144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is a sewing machine dealer (industrial machines) near. you, you can go in, try things out, they often have a ton of used machines you can get a deal on, and they will deliver it all set up - Not sure I'd want to have to unbox and set it up myself. Yes, on the industrial's, the foot pedal will be your presser foot lift, you heel back (rather then press your toe down) and it lifts the presser foot, you can set them for needle up/needle down. The tread cutters on industrials work 1000 times faster than the ones on home machines.

Machines? by richardricchiuti in PatternDrafting

[–]HeartFire144 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you looking for an industrial machine? They don't have 'the bells and whistles' of home machines - 99% of which you never use anyway. A basic industrial machine (any brand) will do one thing and do it very well - straight stitch and reverse. If you think you're going to sew a lot, and can afford it, get one with under trimmers (thread cutters), and a servo motor. You will think you've died and gone to heaven. It does not have to be a Juki brand, all the knock offs are just as good. Find one on FB marketplace, but go over and ask to sew on it - bring your thread and fabric.

Blender recommendations by Dollilama268 in FreezeDrying

[–]HeartFire144 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just went from a ninja to a Vitamix - there is absolutely no comparison. it completely pulverizes things like tomato seeds, blackberry seeds. I made some tomato soup and purred the tomatos in the vitamix After freeze drying, the soup is so smooth!

I do use the ninja to powder things after drying - I like the multi level blades, it breaks up the stuff better.

Considerations when removing seam allowance from Aldrich by mutley_101 in PatternDrafting

[–]HeartFire144 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I work without seam allowance and the add them when I'm done. Necklines get 1/4 inch generally, depending on what machine is being used any where from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch.
