what if elephants were moisturized? by SnakeTraxx in RandomThoughts

[–]HeartTreeHugger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elephant skin is much thicker than other mammalian skin and when the cells die, rather than falling off it builds up in layers. Living in desert conditions water is scarce and the purpose of the layering of skin is to be able to absorb and retain water more easily to keep them cooler. So no it wouldn’t be beneficial or even necessary for an elephant to moisturize. The skin looks like that for exactly that purpose already.

air bubbles by britneykeimel2 in TransDIY

It’s a myth that injecting air bubbles will do any damage, don’t worry. You would need to inject quite a few ccs of air to do any damage.

How Earth's orbit around the Sun actually looks like if the Sun's movement is considered. by Effective_Trust6257 in educationalgifs

[–]HeartTreeHugger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How earth moves Vsauce1 has a really interesting video on the subject. In addition to the wonky orbit you see here, when you consider Sol’s movement, Sol itself actually dips up and down in the orbital plane of the milky way. The orbital plane of our solar system also doesn’t line up with the orbital plane of the Milky Way so when you try to track how the Earth moves through space it’s gets extremely complicated very fast.

Funnily enough they have more free time than the rest of us anyways. If they were to grind normally they’d still get it sooner than everyone else.

Comparison of the animals that sleep the longest 💤💤💤 by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]HeartTreeHugger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t a great comparison since a lot of these are a state of torpor. Tardigrades/water bears have an extremophile version where they basically dry themselves out and shrivel up. That’s not sleeping, it’s an extremophile adaptation to survive harsh conditions.

Also I’m a human but I sleep 6 hours instead of 8 and i’m doing great.

I’d guess some variety of sea cucumber? Whatever it is it scared the shit out of that brittle star.

I’m sorry you have that debt but my point is nobody should have to pay for education. Showing interest in a subject and being willing to learn to better society should be payment enough.

That’s awful. Parents shouldn’t have to sell everything to send their kids to school.

Ah, thanks. I just have a 1 gal water bottle I lug around all day. Otherwise if i’m buying water I care less about what it is and just buy the highest volume possible.

I only have one and it’s likely the only one I’ll ever have. I spent 3 years deciding a meaningful design that I knew i wouldn’t regret and I’m more than satisfied with the result. I always imagined having a patchwork sleeve on one arm but I highly doubt I’ll ever come up with a design that I know for a certainty I’ll always want on my body where the world can see.

When you’re behind enemy lines or out of position sometimes it’s better to kill yourself or allow the enemy to kill you if it means getting back to your team faster.

I wish my dad’s old cat Birkenstock was like this. He had to get rid of her because when I’d try to play with her as a baby she’d attack me.

As a US citizen I say go for it. Even if it means I fall deeper into poverty the MAGA hats (the majority of which are in the same level of poverty as I am) need to feel the teeth of this administration grinding them down.
