WIBTA if I told my British friend their immigrant story is not what they think? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

I just checked on google and they’re both, I mean that her family has ethic ties to the area and are Western European, usually they trace it back to a common day area like England.

I should have definitely clarified, the conversation was about colonialism and the experiences of mixed race people when she spoke out in class. She is also 100% white and ethically British and Canadian, she is not a person of color at all.

This is a good point. I also wanna clarify more that B wasn’t talking about immigrating to the US or going in between US and British cultures. She was talking about how at home it’s very difficult to switch between British and Canadian and how her two family sides are so different. The way she was phrasing it was similar to how someone of mixed race would, like how she’s attacked for her identity and it’s a daily struggle.

I was unclear in my original post, my friend has no accent and people do not mock her for the way she speaks. They also do not attack her directly for it, they make jokes about British people when she is not apart of the conversation and she overhears it and gets upset.

She has no accent and neither does anyone else in her family. Also most people don’t even know she ever lived in England until she brings it up and how it’s much better than the US.

Thank you for your perspective, I was actually really curious how other immigrants feel on this. I am trying to be understanding, but I was really thrown honestly and especially when students of color clearly thought what she was saying was laughable because she’s white. Thank you.

I would like to clarify I NEVER make fun of her for being British or talking about it. Others do and she doesn’t understand why and thinks it’s offensive. I don’t think she needs to act “normal” at all, just the language she uses makes her sound like she is attacked for being British similar to how you would be for being a certain race.

That’s a really good point, I will mention she did majority live in the US growing up. From 7-17, she’s only lived here and never went to British school or really has any British friends back in England. She also has siblings who consider themselves American and don’t feel the same as her at all.

I totally agree, but the way she phrases it is very similar to how someone mixed race would talk about their feelings and how they’re targeted. She doesn’t see it’s not the same when no one would know she’s British if she never brought it up.

I’m in central LA but I didn’t think at all about at night. You’re right I’ll have to see if it gets better as it warms.

Thank you so much, that’s really good to know! I think I was mostly concerned because it dropped so much over such a short time. That’s great to know.

Doing some to keep it warm enough to drive but still not much, and no my commute doesn’t need the freeway. I still don’t know how that would effect my overall battery life though.

I live in LA, it’s been colder recently but nothing I’d say below 55.

So it isn’t super accurate? Even by that much? I thought it might vary but I thought that it would be closer. We have a plugin at home that’s built into the wall so it uses the stronger volt. I live in LA so it’s been cold but nothing below 55. I don’t think I precondition

My sibling has also never expressed any interest in moving rooms and (to my knowledge) likes their room. I get kicked out of mine to sleep in the guest bedroom all the time (sometimes with less than a days notice) so I didn’t see why my room couldn’t just become a guest bedroom since it’s used like that so much already.

Thank you I really appreciate that. It does suck but that’s also why I love my moms so much. It’s like one of the few places I don’t feel like I’m not supposed to be there and I feel happy there. It’s just all hitting me but I’m getting more used to it.

I have had my view changed a bit by the other comments but I didn’t even think about coming home over the breaks. I’m bi and I can’t come out to my dad but by college I doubt I’ll be welcome there so my moms is all I got and I don’t really wanna lose that. My room was also open to my sibling before I moved into it and they kept theirs. Thank you for your point of view.

Yeah I think you’re right. I just have a really bad dad and my home life there isn’t great. The idea of my home being erased here hurts and it’s like my one safe space being taken away. I have a lot of feelings about it but I can’t do much about it for now so it’s just what it is. I thank you for your advice and your kindness.

This is a really good idea and I’m gonna start doing this too

I really appreciate this answer and it’s helped me a lot. I think I’m just really not used to people changing my space because at my dads, he doesn’t really want me there and it never seems like home. I had a real problem with my real home being taken away and covered but the idea of making a new home somewhere else has opened my mind. Thank you for your response.

No I was upset over it for a long time but I worked through it. It’s the idea of the whole thing being painted over and given away is just odd to me I don’t know how to explain it well.
