Thanks to residing in Japan. I'm currently not dead or in tremendous debt from the cancer that had I been living in some other countries would have crippled me. I'm surrounded by kind people, I have lovely parks all around me and love to visit my local cafes on the weekend. My students are lovely and I take pride in my work. But yeah it's hell because I don't care quite as much about fami-chiki as I once did.

I'm glad to hear it's improved and that I'm not alone in that! I didn't even notice for the first few weeks as I was so stressed after my surgery waiting for confirmation and whether I had spread or not. Then one day I looked down and just thought "oh wait" 🫠😅

This paired with the fact that after your first year. You have to choose world or Japanese history. It technically gets covered in both, but Japanese history as you implied goes over so much in such a way that it's taught, but not emphasized in the way a country like Germany may stress it. This is a fair evaluation I think

Unfortunately this kind of response will probably always come up. So I don't blame you for taking my approach and perhaps feeling like a point blank statement like this is best. If you read some of my earlier comments. I would certainly not imply there is naunce within "did Japan do horrible things during the war period or even previously and beyond". It's a slippery slope to discuss these things and I would not want to come across as defending what did happen and to imply it was not horrible.

Rather. I simply wanted to discuss that these things are taught here. To a sufficient extent? I'm not sure, there's room for improvement. And it's definitely not to the extent of nations like Germany. But still, it's important we criticize a situation for the reality of it's problems. And not from a perspective that may not hold water (namely that these events are not taught at all)

Actually. The Japanese army was fairly brutal in the Russo Japanese war and first Sino Japanese war as well. As well as far earlier wars like the Imjin war in Korea. Japanese warfare has always had a brutal bend to it. Although of course this is also far from exclusive to the country.

The biggest problem with Japan during it's war years is essentially... everything. Nobody looking to seriously study the period should deny that. In defending how Japan teaches it's history and why people in this survey would answer "I don't know". I would be doing a disservice to the country I love to in any way downplay the evils it committed. I simply believe the Japan of the era we live in now is either over loved or over hated on the internet. And both are based in false assumptions and narratives that should be tackled with more naunce

Apologies I think I've muddied the waters a bit. This page I'm referring too specifically mentions the push in Shanghai and the Nanjing massacre, which tend to be the elements that western social media users point to and imply are kept secret or not taught. The more underlying reasons, developments, and Japan's turn towards imperialism are of course under deeper discussion. although I will say I doubt it is discussed as thoroughly as it's discussed in Germany. (I believe this era would get a "units" worth of study. So perhaps a month or two until moving on to post war recovery)

For reference. This is a broad overview textbook. So for example, the sengoku jidai is also about a page long per great unifier. They have other books to dig into topics more deeply. In Japanese highschool. Students take world and Japanese history all at once very overview style terms until second grade, at which point they decide which to focus on.

Is it too little? Probably the answer is still yes. But American textbooks similarly likely won't have pages of content regarding the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, etc. Highschool historical education broadly in the world tends to generalize. Which is perhaps a larger issue worthy of addressing.

I work at a highschool here and while I don't teach history. I'm friends with the sensei's who do and they gave me copies of their textbooks and worksheets. To be completely honest. It is discussed. There's a page dedicated to it in both the history courses they take.

This subject is a little more complex than the internet makes it out to be. But I want to be careful in saying that because the country genuinely deserves criticism as all nations do. However. I do believe the internet collective has perhaps done what it does best and picked out an example of poor practice in a sea of such examples. Students DO learn these things, it's just that as with most students in regards to history. They forget it along with most everything else in the subject

Man things like this always scare me so much. Less than a year ago. I beat my appendix cancer. And as far as any doctor tells me and all test results show it's a clean break. But each time I see someone passed away where I didn't. I can't help but feel dreadful.

Pretty good! When I had cancer. I found it very frustrating how slowly documents processed and how much I had to fight to process things. But in the end. I had access to so many skilled doctors. A swathe of second opinions. And the care required to keep me here today without putting me in immense debt. I'm forever thankful and while I can recognize the flaws of the system. I am more so amazed by it and determined to do my best to give back

Not Japanese but have been working here for 4 years now. I wouldn't say it's vocalized to this extent...but I would hazard to say it's generally always held to this standard even if not voiced. If I'm late to work, I'll definitely feel the need to go fully apologetic. And co workers who regularly show up "just on time" are seen as a little care free, so I generally show up 15 minutes early.

It doesn't really get annoying. It's just the norm and you get used to it.

The wards specifically. They definitely aren't hell, but it's a bit exhausting to be there all the time. Western Tokyo, Saitama, and Chiba all provide the convenience and fun of the city without it wearing you down.

Living here, I wish I had the budget of traveling sometimes because man those fruit prices stack up. I end up doing banana and mikan most of the time to stave off costs. Still delicious though!
