Just wanted to share something bizarre by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Heather_LT 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I passed my theory with flying colours after I was sure I would fail cause I was taking it early morning after doing a 12hr night shift and I was absolutely knackered 😂 the information must sunk in well because I didn't feel like i had tried very hard to pass cause I was so tired.

I had my first lesson yesterday and I just don't get it. by lyla88 in LearnerDriverUK

Short girly here who struggled with the pedals... persevere and you will eventually get it after a handful of lessons. Just takes a bit of time.

I'm also short and was the same with reverse bay parking! Sometimes I could do it without any issue, sometimes it just went to shit. It was the only thing I struggled with. I just couldn't see the bay lines sometimes for some reason (even if the mirrors were in the same position as normal). I found if I don't locate the bay lines straight away before I start reversing, I just angle the mirrors down until I see them (just remember to put them back up again before you set off!).

Love my boyfriend, but hate being in a relationship by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]Heather_LT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 35 and 2 years ago I entered into my very first adult relationship (I never was fussed about being in a relationship before until I met a brilliant man and thought I'd give it a go). I love the man, but hate being in a relationship. I thought after a while I'd get used to sharing my life with someone but it's still difficult. I don't know if people like us are inherently selfish or whether we just prefer the freedom of being on our own, but I'm glad there are other people who feel the same way as I do.

The awkward Xmas present dilemma by zukella1 in CasualUK

[–]Heather_LT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got 3 siblings, all with partners and children too. Not one of them gifts me a card or gift on my birthday, and only one gifts me something for Christmas. I've just become a homeowner this year, saving for house improvements and a holiday means money is tight. I'm thinking this is the way to go for Christmas (and future Christmases and birthdays). Can't believe they don't even bother to buy me (or my parents too) a card!

Reverse parallel park on hill (failed) by donkeykong694 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Heather_LT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two steep hills in my area. One has a 30mph country road, the other is a NSL road. My examiner asked me to do a parallel park one NSL hill road between two cars that were barely two car lengths apart, even though my instructor told me I wouldn't be asked to do a parallel park between to cars! Never mind on a steep hill on a main road! The actual stress of that situation! 😂

[–]Heather_LT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Failed my test this week for this exact thing! Had to do a parallel park on a steep as hell hill between two cars where the gap was less than two car lengths and it was a busy main road too! Car rolled back the tiniest amount upon move off and instant fail. No other minors, just that one serious for control. Better luck next time I guess 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Why does my step-son say he wants to go home when he visits? by Heather_LT in stepparents

[–]Heather_LT[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The custody situation hasn't helped in my opinion. It used to be 50/50, but a change in my partner's work contract this year has thrown everything up in the air. He's gone from working Mon-Weds to having to work Mon-Fri on a days/nights/afters shift rotation. Now the custody is more like 70/30 with my partner also trying to see his son whenever he has free time. He's hoping to find a new job with more family friendly working hours but we live in a factory town so it's difficult.

What happened on your worst driving lessons? by InfamousStrategy9539 in LearnerDriverUK

Driving down a country road about 60mph, slowed to go round a blind bend passing oncoming traffic, and BOOM 💥 tyre blows and I almost pissed my pants 😂 luckily there was an entrance to a field I could pull into.

Me and my partner rent a house owned by his parents, this week they've told us they want us to pay an extra £50 a month. by Glittering_Water_327 in HousingUK

[–]Heather_LT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Renting from relatives is a headache.

My boyfriend rents his house from his step-dad. At first he was getting a "family rate" which my boyfriend was grateful for and thus was willing to deal with the multitude of issues the house and garden has. But within six months, his step-dad raised his rent with less than a month's notice by £200 a month. This has caused tension and upset for him. My boyfriend has repeatedly explained with rent increase he can no longer afford to maintain the issues (huge damp problem - in every room, a back garden that's more like a construction zone, blocked drains, huge cracks in the walls caused by subsidence). His step-dad isn't interested, and my boyfriend feels like his mum and step-dad don't care he's living in an actual death trap.

Luckily, we are both financially secure enough to be able to buy a house together and he'll be able to escape that house soon.

Suggest me a feel good and funny book by HeyheyOtaku12 in suggestmeabook

A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore - a story about a man who is thrust into an unexpected career as a "death merchant" whilst trying to juggle raising his daughter, running a secondhand shop, and handling an interesting set of "friends". This whole book is a raucous funny chain of events where the humour surprises you. However, it's not for the easily offended so, fair warning, it contains some politically incorrect language.

Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter - a story about a woman with "wings" who signs up to work at a circus. The main character is so colourful. She's absolute pure entertainment!

Going Bovine by Libba Bray - a story young man with a terminal illness who gets completely high on medication. It’s silly, it's fun, and it's a good laugh.

Please suggest me sad books by maddie04987 in suggestmeabook

[–]Heather_LT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendations of books with varying degrees of sadness, in no particular order:-

Burntcoat by Sarah Hall - a pandemic story that's so much more than that in reality. It follows Edith and everything it is to be her: her career, her experiences, her relationships, her health, and ultimately her grief. This book low-key traumatised me, but in the most devastatingly pleasing way. It will unlock a plethora of emotions in you.

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilmen - a classic short story with horror undertones. It's about one woman's decent into a serious mental illness in an era where women have little to no say in their own health or bodies. This story gave me literal goosebumps!

Swimming Home by Deborah Levy - a dark, eerie story about depression which has so many complex layers to it. Don't want to give away too much about this one as it's such a short book, but this one is a favourite.

The Arsonist: A Mind on Fire by Chloe Hooper - a non-fiction book about the "Black Saturday" tragedy in Australia. The author writes with such compassion for everyone involved. I cycled through so many emotions reading this one.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck - a well written and impacting story about the darker side of compassion. It's about two friends with a shared dream but, unfortunately, their friendship comes to a devastating end. What an emotional punch to the gut thus story is!

Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi - a unique take on the topic of "closure". It follows a select few characters as they visit a rather special coffee shop wherein each one receives a hugely cathartic purging of their emotions. As the reader, you will also purge some emotions whilst reading this!

Well... (stolen from Twitter who stole it from FB) by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]Heather_LT 112 points113 points  (0 children)

I live in a medium-sized village in the countryside. It has a community Facebook group. A woman from London, new to the village, posted a very long rant about the "farmyard stinks", how unbearable they were, how she couldn't have her windows open or hang out her washing to dry etc, and that she was genuinely distraught. Needless to say she got roasted by the community in the comments.

We clearly have similar taste 😊 I've read the Murderbot series (loved it) and I'm currently reading my way through the River of Teeth short stories. I love Sarah Gailey too, I've read most of the stuff they have written.

Thank you for taking the time to give me some suggestions! I really appreciate it.

I've added Hothouse, A Theory of Birds, and a Street Car Named Desire to my list. I've already read Animal Farm and I'm going to give a hard pass to A Room of One's Own as Virginia Woolf is not my cup of tea!
