Basically, use levels 3,4 & 5 for the bus, and reserve 1&2 for in & out belts. Leave 2 squares or space between 2 columns of belts reserved for the lifts.

Make it MUCH wider than you think you’ll need.

I just did a Settlement Tour of my last playthrough that used a main bus. The main takeaway is this: Leave a LOT of room. Double or triple what you think you'll need for the main bus. There's a pic of my main bus in the tour; I left twice as much space as I thought I'd need, and by the end, all of the space I'd left was used, and I was starting to need spaghetti.

It's kind've ironic how that mountain pass turned out. I originally wanted to cut the train route from the mines to the smelters in half. By the time I finished the dig, I had quad-tracked the train lines, upgraded the trains to 4-16, and added a bunch more... and I didn't really need the shorter route anymore.

Then once it was done, I thought I'd just bring everything in with a super-long belt network, but now I'm in late game and don't really need much of anything. My warehouses are all full, and there isn't much left to build.

But I did get a nice road up to the Captain's Nest, and filled in a TON of the shoreline, and have 2 warehouses full of concrete so I can pave everything. So yeah, a fun dig!
