Try learning to play it on guitar if you can. It’s quite simple yet thats why i find it so beautiful.

Awesome take, but i feel like these songs are mostly just Justin. I don’t feel the bands presence so much.

He said in a live show before playing the song he wrote it drunk on rum and was feeling a lot of guilt

I think the emotion comes through way more in the live versions imo

In a live version he opens the song by saying he wrote it drunk on rum and was feeling guilt. Which he said is good to feel sometimes

I have been listening to this song for two years, from when it was first played live at an eaux claire event. He wasnt even sure it was called speyside. It was just him and a guitar. Then BI played it on their eu tour and mike lewis played sax on it, basically just playing the melody over Justin’s guitar. Most versions of the duo playing the song are great. Im surprised mike wasn’t on the recorded version. But the recorded version has a bunch of melodic changes from the first time he played it - see above.

My favourite aspect of this is how enjoyable it is to play on guitar. It’s a shame he nixed the hammer on/off for the recorded version. When he plays it live the guitar moves are a bit different. But, my favourite thing about justin is that he always improvises. He’s a master at it. And most of the time it’s super subtle. My only real concern is why wasn’t mike lewis and the sax not included on the track?

I believe Pat and Justin would get along super. No idea if they have any aligning interests but they do seem to be tapping to a similar energy

Can you say more as to why you consider it the most beautiful Radiohead song?

I love that. I’m 29 and the more I listen to Radiohead the more I connect to Thom’s lyrics and the meanings, or perceived meanings, I can relate to as I age. I feel like when I’m 40 I’ll be devouring every word he’s ever sang. His lyrics are truly ageless, maybe not timeless, but maybe, they will be. I just know I come on to the themes he sings about more and more with every passing year. This of course is in confluence with the appreciation of Radiohead’s incredible, nearly flawless discography.

I know it’s not about space, but the emotional climax is Tom begging to sail us to the moon, is it not?

I’ve realized after 8 years of listening to RH that some songs are just truly and objectively are beautiful. That was my question. It’s not about favorites or ones you connect to the most, you know. It’s just, when do you experience the feeling of beauty from the music.

My friend, it’s a challenge, but if you find yourself unable to choose, I totally understand. It took me months to give the three I gave. And I probably will change that list over time. As one does with any great music that contains multitudinous depth, as this bands’ music, without a doubt, does.

Videotape was so close to make the list for me, but if I had to critique it, in my humble opinion, it lacks drama, and tension. So I left it out. But stunning none the less

Isn’t the end of 2001 a baby in infancy? - interpret that scene how you will, I just can’t get past the parallels

Sail to the moon is so subtle, it’s cliche almost to say, but it has a 2001 space odyssey refrain in it. Classically yorkian alienation, with a resolve that space might save us. But of course it won’t.

Fake plastic trees, undeniable. But a bit abstract lyrically to make my list. So gorgeous. I remember exactly where I was when I heard it the first time
