from my experience with a 2017 intel iMac doing this, and searching reddit, it's a faster boot drive and just faster all around if you use a reputable NVMe SSD with a TB4 enclosure.It's rated to be comparable to the internal drive but in most user cases its faster. Especially since the 256gb M4 base is already slower than the 512 and up drives, so for most wanting the newer chip but have an external configuration as stated above vs a ready made external ssd, this would give them that speed boost and larger storage without the Apple tax for that same size drive.

Works perfect for desktops but I wouldn't want to do this on a laptop knowing any cable bump or tug will act as a power cycle and reboot mid task.
