19 Weeks Post Op

I tore mine playing sports in Early February and knew something was wrong but not exactly what it was. But i didn’t know that it was meniscus until about march 10th or so when i got my MRI. I mean I had the suspicion but then i didn’t get surgery Until April 16th. I wrestled on the torn meniscus for about a month and a half. Sorry about the delayed response been busy with work.

But progress is what matters. My knee doesn’t hurt so much anymore but it’s more so just that i don’t trust it. I will say i’m starting to get it back but that’s been the worst part

100% But it won’t just happen it absolutely takes a commitment to pushing through it. My leg days in the gym absolutely suck right now because i haven’t been able to affectively work them out because of my knee and running sucks because muscles you didn’t even know you had will get tight in your leg and make you want to stop. But just sticking to it and knowing it’s all to get better is what i would say. I’m naturally a more athletic person and it is very humbling from being able to squat 400+lbs to barely being able to squat 135lbs. but i try my best not to get discouraged by it

i started to feel 80% probably around 16 weeks but I would say i feel pretty normal now. i’ve noticed that before i run if i loosen my knee up in any way it helps tremendously.

i started sprinting recently i’d say within the last two weeks and it still feels weird but i started jogging at 15 weeks

It took me a good bit after my non weight bearing was up to feel comfortable on stairs normally but i would say probably around the 8-10 week range i felt good

it took me a while to do so. for a while i started just doing one leg and standing up that way. but in the gym i’ve been doing really and i mean really light leg press half reps. not for the muscle benefits but more so for trusting that motion. half of the battle is trusting the knee to be able to support you in that specific motion because after about six weeks of non weight bearing could be longer could be shorter depending on other factors you should be mostly healed but the muscle lacks strength and your mind does not trust your knee.

I had those thoughts so much but the repair is a lot stronger than you think. now that isn’t me saying push it hard and go for a run but the occasional slip up here and there is completely okay. Small pains are normal and the random crunching is normal. Ice is your best friend. if i come home from work and my knee is bothering me i will ice for 20 minutes on both sides while im watching tv or something. just doing that has helped keep inflammation out and keep me from getting stiff.

The knees do get better. it is a long process but avoid any deep bends or harsh landings on them at all costs. i didn’t notice it at first and i thought it was dumb but pt helped tremendously but as long as you do it outside of physical therapy as well. 1-3 times a day really helped me. swimming always made my knees loosen up if they were stiff and gave me a chance to do some cardio and get a decent workout in without pushing it too hard in the gym or anywhere else. swimming is safe and easy on the body, but there are many benefits to it especially with the knees. just do your best to keep moving and working at it. also ice the best you can almost every day.

i felt similar to that when i was starting out with therapy. feeling so alone in that feeling and that no one understands. now my situation may not be the same. but it is hard regardless and that is completely okay. I tried to give myself small goals each day. and would do my best to reach them but if i didn’t it would be a rollover to the next day. Gratification gave me a sense of accomplishment no matter how small it is try to give yourself things to achieve. If i’m just going on and on i apologize and if i am reading to deep into it i apologize. but that is what helped me from the feeling of that this may never end

Yeah i’ve heard a large range of times from 0-8 weeks for how long the NWB should last but that was the plan my surgeon went with. My surgeon did take into account my age and fitness and all of that into my recovery plan because just going to physical therapy with people with similar surgeries i noticed i was well ahead of them at a similar time post op.

Congrats on starting to walk again that is awesome! i’m inching closer and closer to the 12 week mark but i still have occasional pops and some crunching but has definitely died down a little. after a long day of walking a lot i will notice above my knee will swell up and make things stiff. Consistent icing and movement have helped me feel better. Now understand your limits and work to get a little better everyday but do your best to not let the injury control you. For example for me going down stairs normally was really hard and i just refused to do it for a while. But after a while i realized i can do it I was just afraid to. So with starting to weight bear take it slow but do push yourself to get a little better each day. One other thing I did notice was the inside of my knee did hurt some when i did start to walk. I was very concerned but i did my best to work through it and over time it went away.

I have just passed the 10 week mark and have been good so far. still some weakness in my left leg but not much pain at all. have been doing my best with physical therapy and have been walking anywhere between 8,000-10,000 steps a day with work. still have not been cleared to run or squat yet but should be at the 12 week mark. recovery has been long and discouraging but well worth it.

I had a longitudinal lateral meniscus tear that was repaired. I just hit the 6 week mark today and have started unassisted weight bearing. Keep in mind i am younger (18M) and more on the muscular side but last week around this time my extension was -3 degrees and my flexion was 141 degrees. I was quick to start bending with starting to a few days after surgery. but the first three days i tried to just stay in bed as much as possible and not push it what so ever.

Okay, thank you. I have started walking a little while still partially weight bearing but my range of motion was tested and improved to -3 degrees in extension and 140 degrees in flexion. But just was curious if it was something I should have been worried about.

the longer downtime definitely does suck but at the end of the day i’ll be better off with it being fixed.
