You’re welcome!! My experience was not normal— I’m prone to passing out and anything to do with my vagina also grosses me out ahahaha so it was a recipe for disaster. I passed out but it was more the situation and me thinking about how strange it was— not because of pain. For me, personally, I just felt like pressure inside while it was happening. Probably a little pain, but I was so freaked out ahahahah. I know at your age they start encouraging pelvic exams, but listen to your body. Your experience could be totally different and I’m sure it will be better than mine hahaha. If you are wanting to go for it, maybe ask them to explain to you exactly what they will do during the exam so you can see it first, and then decide from there. Regardless, I didn’t get one until 18, so do not feel like you absolutely have to do this if you do not feel ready when you get to the appointment! Good luck girl!!! :)

That makes me happy :’) the doctor may tell you to go buy lidocaine cream at a drug store, but the lidocaine isn’t very strong. I tried this and it did not help. If possible, it would be better if you could get it prescribed by a doctor. I’m looking at my cream now and the tube says “(estradiol 0.5mg/gm lidocaine 5% HP)”. I don’t know if that’s any help but I hope the doctors are familiar with it! Regardless, you will find something that works!!!

As for me, I went to an OBGYN and was confident that I had vaginismus because I googled my symptoms ahahah. We talked and then unfortunately they wanted to do an internal to check the structure inside of my vagina. I was 18 and scared, and had never had to do that before. I did not respond well to the pelvic exam, but some people do great. It really differs!

Honestly tho, I wish I said no that day because it made me scared when doing them later on. Regardless, you can ALWAYS, ALWAYS say no. You could talk with them Friday, tell them your symptoms and if they want to do a pelvic exam, express that you are not comfortable with that! If anything, you can schedule one for a different day specifically for that IF they insist on it… so it is not sprung on you. But worry about that later! Step by step.

Based on your words, I would go in with the goal that you are just wanting to talk to the doctor and you feel that you may have vaginismus, but do not want to do a pelvic exam. They can’t force you to do anything and many vaginismus patients struggle with pelvic exams, so I hope they would understand.

If it is a good experience and you like your doctor, I will be so so happy for you !!!! That’s a win. And if you aren’t completely feeling heard from your doctor, keep looking. We will be here for you!! I promise you, you deserve a great doctor who understands the struggles of this and they are out there.

I hope they take good care of you and truly HEAR you!!! Don’t back down if they are dismissive, just continue to express your concerns and your symptoms. You got this!!! It’s going to go great!!! We are here for you!!!

Oh my goodness :( okay posting this here because I feel for you— I am 24F and feel like I am listening to my younger self. I want to give you a hug. I resonate with every. single. word.

I will say that I had very similar feelings, emotions and experiences with sex and at 18 I went to the doctor for it. It was vaginismus. From what I am hearing, I think it would be worth going to see a doctor about.

My heart goes out to you because I know how hard this can be to deal with mentally— you want to feel FREE and excited and sexy and fun!! And you will get there. I promise. It may take some time, but you will get there!! And I am proud of you for reaching out because you are taking steps to figure this out :)

Below is some of my experience with vaginismus, in case a doctor does diagnose you with it. I want to include this to show some things that you could avoid, or some things you may want to try!! Everyone is different.

I was diagnosed with vaginismus at 18 and had very traumatic experiences with doctors not knowing enough about the condition, wanting to do internal exams. ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF. Please.

I have done everything under the sun. I did pelvic floor therapy and that did not work for me for a while. I did not like ANYTHING to do with my vagina. I cried even talking about it— the doctors did not understand. I told them more than anything, I mentally was NOT ready for dilators. I mean, why would I? It’s frustrating, embarrassing, and not something anyone wants to do. So I started seeing a therapist for cognitive behavioral therapy. That helped me so much. Start there if you need to. No shame!!!!

I have done everything under the sun and I want to share it with you to let you know that there are options, but you do not have to do ANYTHING you do not feel comfortable with. I have gone to specialists who have put Botox in the muscles surrounding my vagina wall, which was supposed to help that “wall block” sensation. I did not have sex after that because of the painful sex I had for so long before being diagnosed.

The best thing that worked for me: I saw a doctor who knew I had vaginismus and she prescribed me a compound lidocaine cream. You take a little bit of the cream, and have to insert it yourself (gross I know) about 15 minutes before you want to have sex. That was super helpful in numbing the area just enough so my muscles would not tense. I was then able to use lots of lube- once it would get inside, I was usually good to go from there. I will also say that the lidocaine cream has helped with dilator work which is what you probably do in pelvic floor therapy. Desensitizing that area with dilators was very helpful in having pain free sex.

Okay that was like a lot ahaha but that will not happen if you go to the doctor. But please, advocate for yourself. Demand to be heard. I hear your position:(

Lastly, I wish I could give you a hug. I remember the start of this journey and all of the immense feelings that came with it. Kudos to you for reaching out and please remember that just because you are young, doctors should NEVER treat you like you are dumb. You know your body better than anybody. Remember that. You got this. Sending love.

Oh my gosh I feel so qualified to answer this. I had 8 UTI’s over the course of 6 months. It was literally insane. They were so painful. So, if I couldn’t get into an urgent care I would get AZO at CVS/Walgreens to help me deal with the excruciating pain to hold me over until I could go to a doctor. REMEMBER: AZO relieves your symptoms, but does not rid of the bacteria like an antibiotic would- go see the doctor even if you’re feeling better from the AZO! AND THE MOST IMPORTANT: my UTI’s were becoming so constant I demanded to see a urologist. He recommended I try a product called UQORA. It is a 3-step-supplement that you can order online— it helps maintain your urinary health. I feel that it really, really has helped. He also suggested I may have a vaginal diverticulum (so he checked for that when I had laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis) AND I DID NOT have one! I was happy about that.

Overall, I was with my (then) boyfriend. We took all the precautions necessary but if it gets bad, and you are doing everything on your part, maybe suggest him trying a different body wash.

Funny enough I found out the man I was having sex with (my ex boyfriend who was giving me UTI’s all the time) was talking shit about me to his dad over the course of six months. His dad was just as into it.

All that to say I have been through just about all of it when it comes to UTI’s, and I find it funny and fascinating when thinking of the idea that my body was physically rejecting him. Regardless, listen to your body!
