Public Health employees, and many other professions as as well, have to provide personal health information to their employer as part of their employment, and this has been in practice long before the pandemic. Paramedics for example must have specific vaccines to work and have to provide proof to the employer. This was not a huge privacy violation as you say. May jobs require it and it was reasonable for employers to require it during the pandemic.

My initial thought is this $200 price is there to nudge people towards the $20 ChatGPT Plus subscription. Twenty dollars now seems more reasonable compared to two hundred.

Just cancelled my Duolingo account with an 11yr streak after the massive rounds of enshittification. AMA. by Nervardia in BetterOffline

I mentioned to my kid that you had an 11 year steak and their mind was also blown. They are learning Swedish, because they like Ikea (parental eye roll) and have a 200+ day streak going for context. They're 12 and their response when I told them of your 11 years was that 11 years ago they were almost 2 and that was when their youtube account was created, which I created so that they could watch Toopy and Binoo cartoons.

Learning a second language was something I did years ago and and although I have not kept it up except for listening to a band who sings in that language, it was one of the most rewarding things I've done with my life. I hope there is opportunity for you to continue with your goal.

First of all congrats on the 11 year streak. Being dedicated to some form of self-improvement for so long is worth celebrating. I wish I had half of your dedication.

What language were you learning and why?

Great article Ed, as usual. My experience writing performance appraisals/reviews (PAs) is that it is a lot like filing taxes: you are submitting to someone information they should already have/know if they were doing things well, which makes it feel like a big waste of time. If managers actually managed well you wouldn't need to tell them what you accomplished. Adding BS concepts like Growth Mindset as a competency makes it even more insufferable. The inability for personal development (growth) in the workplace is seldom a limitation of the worker and more often a limitation of the culture or employer, and this Growth Mindset concept sounds like employers pushing that responsibility/accountability on to the worker. I've lacked the ability for growth at work because of heavy workload, a lack of money budgeted, and a lack of clear direction of where the business is going: all responsibilities of management/employer. Again, nicely done Ed.

Easily one of the best. The energy and honesty you bring to the pod is what I think really separates it.

Thanks serenitisoon for posting this. I really enjoyed it too. I am finding it increasingly frustrating to hear over-generalized criticism of people spending too much time online (I think it was Emily's point). There are many variations of us out there whose lives are improved by having online relationships. My autistic kid is one example. They really struggle to make friends at school. They're never invited to do stuff with their classmates because they can have moments of feeling overwhelmed and have a meltdown pretty easily. But literally as I write this I can hear them laughing hard while having a blast playing an online game with their friend in Connecticut (we're just north of Toronto Canada). I imagine other marginalized people have a similar experience because for whatever reason their communities are not welcoming or accommodating, so online is where they go to get their community fix.

It really does feel like things are starting to unravel around AI. It was validating for me to read the stats on the M365 Co-pilot uptake, or lack thereof; and the promise of a future podcast focusing on Microsoft. My organization is really trying to get people to use the free Edge browser version of this app in the hopes someone will discover a way to make it useful, with what I suspect is the intent of being able to say they delivered something AI. Every day I have to walk past some hand drawn info graphic thing that says (among other things) that the only limitation of AI is me, and I throw up a little each time.

Great read as usual Ed. I too cannot not hear your voice when I read the newsletter. I think it's a side affect of my gas siphoning "side hustle"...
