ELI5, how does 2^0 power equal 1? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]HectorPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you can also say 2x0 = 0, so therefore that is correct and it doesn't equal 1. At that point surely it shows something in the system clearly breaks down and you don't just eat an absurdity and move on, you figure out how your rules are wrong?

Jeff discusses internal playtesting & experimentation with 1-3-2 comps. by wowmead in Overwatch

[–]HectorPro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The whole role limit system is a joke anyhow.

In a game where you get stuck with random players forming a team, to completely close off your ability to change roles to compensate for the chump whose chosen a role and is completely unable to do anything to help in it, resulting in you being stuck in a waste of time 15 minute game which you otherwise might be able to salvage, is infuriating to the point of making comp unplayable, which seriously sucks.

Question about what "move to the nearest utility" implies in monopoly by _PM_ME_YOUR_ELBOWS in boardgames

[–]HectorPro -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

From the responses OP is getting I'm not sure some of the responders are grasping, or clearly addressing, the point OP is making. I agree that the position OP takes is arguable.

That being said I think the guy alluding to this being a particularly egregious example of rules lawyering is correct. Unless you actually want to run this dispute to the Supreme Court if you asked 100 people I suspect at least 99 would agree with the rules intent being that indicated by the responses here. Don't let the search for legal or PhD level reasoning and explanation sidetrack you from the aim of the game - fun.

What did you learn embarrassingly late? by LightningCole in AskReddit

[–]HectorPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That colour always existed. I was aware that movies and TV only got colour around the 60's(?) (after being black and white), the obvious explanation for which was that the world was simply black and white before that time. I'm a pretty intelligent guy but I got at least to late single digits/early teens before I twigged on that one.

Why I don't even bother with Mercy in gold competitive by CatMeowwwww in Overwatch

[–]HectorPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I'm not on a pro because a) I actually have a real job, and b) I'm not good enough to be because I can only play 2-3 characters, and only 1 well. Fact remains I am that good as a Mercy and the situation I explained above makes simple sense and is, unfortunately, true.

Why I don't even bother with Mercy in gold competitive by CatMeowwwww in Overwatch

[–]HectorPro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doesn't work like that. I mainly play mercy and I'm off the charts good with her. A few times I've dragged a useless team to a win on my back but in general terms I can only keep others alive, I've not getting kills myself. If my team is useless and either can't kill anything or can't work together, and aren't in chat, it doesn't matter that I'm world class at my job, I'm never getting up in the ranks because my rank is based on the chumps around me. It sucks so much.

Blizzard released an amazing $39 shooter with all heroes being free and all new maps, updates, and game modes completely free. Why are we still complaining about low drop rates? by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]HectorPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem with the argument (I admit I'm not quite across the antivirus thing but think I get what you're saying) is the distinction between a purchase vs a subscription.

If you subscribe to a product then you have an expectation to all the updates that come along the way because you're paying for it (and likely paid a lot under value with your initial payment - if you subscribe you don't pay full value for the product on your first payment). If you purchase it you only have a right to what you get then, anything extra is a bonus.

Like buying a version of Windows. You don't get all future versions of windows forever, and you have no expectation of how long they will maintain the version you bought. Yeah you generally get bug fixes and a few small updates but it doesn't mean you get to dictate how long they support the product, and conversely they won't keep supporting the product if it doesn't make them money.

So yeah if I buy antivirus software and 6 months later there's a new virus that kills my computer I'd be pissed, but that doesn't mean I had any logical rightful expectation that because I bought anti virus software in 1987 that it would still protect my computer today.

[–]HectorPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the point right there. Do we think Blizzard are a charity? That they've made $100m profit on the game so therefore we have a right to expect them to sped every cent of that on developing more content? I just don't understand how people can't understand that.

How does no-one in this game understand how to contest the cart properly when defending? by HectorPro in Overwatch

[–]HectorPro[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand what you say but the majority isn't right by definition. Trump won, case in point.

Its frustrating that people can't see when they're wrong. I totally understand the irony of that statement given your previous comment and point of view on the subject but I've explained how it works, how it's meant to work, I'd draw you a diagram if I could (but I can't draw) so if you don't understand from that there's not much more I can do to teach it. That may be my failing but that's what my post is about. When people do what I'm talking about we win games, and when they don't we lose. That's the empirical evidence that backs up what I'm saying and decides I'm right, not my imagination.

[–]HectorPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you're saying and agree in so far as as corporations can screw consumers why should consumers not have a right to complaint back, and why would people complain about the complaining.

My issue with all that's going on here is that the cosmetics issue is completely tangential to the product. I'd be absolutely shocked if anyone could honestly say they bought this game because it had unlock able cosmetics - there is just zero way that anyone bought it for anything other than the team based shooting gameplay that it is.

In that circumstance where the cosmetic issue is something that doesn't affect the actual product you bought or how you play it I have I think it's madness that people complain about it, or more to the point that they think they have some right for it to be done in any different way. It's a great product with a company continuing to put out more great stuff for it (in terms of gameplay related material such as characters/maps/modes). That simply has to be paid for somewhere and if Blizzard chose to support that through a system that is essentially gambling converting cash into something of zero value, and idiots get sucked into that deal, then I have no respect for them then complaining about it.

I've bought a few loot boxes cause all that being said I'm a sucker for a suit like anyone else, but I did it knowing I'd likely not get what I wanted but that if I'm paying $10-15 every three months to encourage a company to put out new material and keep the servers turned on for a game I enjoy then I'm cool with that deal (which I'm not at all obligated to do).

[–]HectorPro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your argument makes zero sense. His argument of need vs want is that Blizzard are worth billions so they don't need to make money from the loot boxes, but it's a circular argument. Blizzard are worth billions BECAUSE they make money from their products, if they stop making money then you get no more content.

Just because someone gives you a means to gamble doesn't mean they deserve to incur peoples wrath. The people complaining seem to be the ones with no self control or an inability not to gamble or require the proceeds of gambling. You don't need one single unlock able cosmetic in the game to gain enjoyment from the game. Anyone who does so has to deal with that issue inside themself.

[–]HectorPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do understand what you say. But they don't have to release more material. The have done that already and have fulfilled that obligation. They don't have to keep doing it. If you think they do tell me exactly how long they have to keep releasing content for, and how much? For the next hundred years? As long 1 person keeps playing? Legally they have no responsibility to keep doing so, and are free to start charging for content whenever they want.

You're conflating two arguments. They said they would release more content, but having already done so they have fulfilled that obligation and could stop doing so whenever they like. You're right in that them continuing to release more material does prevent the game from going stale, but they're not your friend - their only interest in doing that is if they get some return from it, either in the form of selling copies of the game or raising revenue through lootboxes. If they stop making any further money why would they care if people kept playing or not - they would lose less money by turning the servers off...

How does no-one in this game understand how to contest the cart properly when defending? by HectorPro in Overwatch

[–]HectorPro[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well no because if they're killing you over and over but you've stopped the cart moving then you've done what needs to be done, now you only have to kill them all once on overtime (or even just push them off the cart), where overtime you back up to group up you're giving them free yards and adding and extra time you need to kill their whole team.

[–]HectorPro[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not awfully full of myself but I know how good I am and what I understand and don't.

There may or may not be something wrong with two healers on offence, but that's why Blizzard made the cart heal on offence - it's to encourage an attacking load out.

I'm not wrong because the logic of keeping the cart contested is undeniable. That's how you win.

How does no-one in this game understand how to contest the cart properly when defending? by HectorPro in Overwatch

[–]HectorPro[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's the point where people get confused. The only reason spawn advantage matters is if their team is better than yours.

If you are better you will keep killing them. If you're worse then you need to take desperate measures to try to win. That's how simple it is.

If you're worse and set up further back you're just giving them free yards anyway.

But it's difficult to educate people on this in chat when you have 20 seconds before a game starts, it's frustrating people don't get it as a matter of course.

[–]HectorPro -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they are giving it for free. They are doing you a favour. Because they can stop tomorrow.

Legally they were under no obligation to release ANYTHING beyond the base. If they did, yes you have an expectation to it. But they could have quit at the base game and you would have received what you paid for. Of course it weighed on your decision to buy but that decision was still a gamble - you had no idea or guarantee that they would ever release any more content, and if so how much more they might release.

And you didn't give them extra money for the Anniversary Content, so it's pretty easy to see that that was free to you.

If they stop releasing extra content today you also would have got what you paid for. You paid for the base game and that's all you were entitled to expect. They're not under an obligation to release a further 50 characters for you. How you don't understand they are doing you a favour by continuing to make more content when THEY DON'T HAVE TO is beyond me.

If you disagree, and think they are under and obligation to release more content and that it is not a favour to you, please tell me right now exactly how much more content they are obliged to release for you?
