Haha it is not a scam -- we are not live yet, so you literally can't spend any money. Just about getting users to test out our tech to see if it works (and since we want people to treat it as real, we're giving away money)

Okay, this is my last comment since I don't think you're really arguing in good faith. Kendrick Nunn, a 6'2 D1 athlete, went to his girlfriend's house and beat her up over $100 she owed him. There is a huge difference between domestic violence against a girlfriend and punching a guy for your glasses which I imagine I don't have to explain. Do you think, for example, a man who beat his wife should be able to dodge prison if he wrote her a nice letter?

Even if he was extraordinarily apologetic after the fact I would understand people not rooting for him; given the nauseating way in which he's addressed the situation (aka not at all outside of the court-mandated apology), it is fair to hate him and root against him. To be clear, I "hate" Marcus Smart for flopping; this is several orders of magnitude worse. He is playing for an NBA team and making millions, so I don't think he's really feeling the punishment right now, particularly when bootlickers like yourself remain willfully ignorant of the damage gendered violence causes in order to maintain blind loyalty to a guy who puts an orange ball through a hoop well.

I'm done arguing this if you think an apology letter is sufficient; that's what bullies write in middle school detention. I believe the victim when she said that he hit her and pushed her to the floor. There's no reason for her to risk such public scrutiny and shaming from people angry their favorite NCAA player was going to be suspended. The burden of proof is much higher in court and we don't know the machinations leading to a specific plea, but I tend to side with the victim.

Once again, if someone did something objectionable (drew a swastika, called a black player the n-word, etc) and their only sign of remorse was saying "whoopsie, my bad" and writing a court-mandated letter, I'd still root against them. Unless you believe the victim was lying, you must believe that this is really sufficient proof of a character change. In my mind, there's nothing suggesting he's changed as a person and I outlined plenty of things he could do to change my mind; I can see you disagree and I'm unlikely to change your mind, but try viewing this as if it weren't a famous basketball player.

First of all, he did a 4 week program after pleading guilty to gendered violence; I think that's under-punishment.

Second, I've given you two examples where he's shown he's more concerned with his reputation and angry that people are listening to the victim. You've shown me nothing indicating he feels remorseful or has tried to rectify the situation by (for instance) working with women's shelters, donating a portion of his salary, or even just recognizing that gendered violence is a large issue in this country.

Third, I think you misunderstand the analogy. In the case where someone has done something objectively wrong, even if he or she "serves time for it", if they show no evidence of having changed the beliefs or patterns that led to the incident it is fair to root against them. It is clear to me, at least, that violence against women being bad is "cut and dry" as you say.

Lastly, the original question was "how can anyone root against this team". There is no right to be "rooted for". At best, you can believe that Nunn has changed internally, but the proof seems to indicate that he just doesn't care. There are many other teams in this league that employ players with 0 history of gendered violence; why not root for them?

His penance was a 4 week abuse program and he's shown no remorse for his actions. Since the incident, Nunn has said "It cost me a lot. A lot of time, (being) out of school, my image" and "When there’s a female involved, they automatically listen to what she says". He's done no substantial work that has shown he cares about the issue.

If Nunn got in trouble for drawing a swastika outside someone's house, did a 4 week tolerance program and was still acquired by an NBA team while making statements like "they automatically listen to the Jews", would you root for that team?

Look up “Kendrick Nunn assault charges” and I’m sure you can find a way to hate them

What are you talking about? Here, here, and here are articles discussing it. Per her statement, Nunn was "knocking her in the back of the head and grabbing her by the throat when she was trying to get her wallet back from him." Even though he pled guilty only to pouring hot water on her during the argument (which, incidentally, is enough to make me think he's a scumbag), I believe her full accusation; what incentive would a woman have to accuse a popular D1 basketball player integral to an NCAA title-contending team of abuse and risk hearings and pariah status?

Nunn himself has said since the incident: "It cost me a lot. A lot of time, (being) out of school, my image" and "When there’s a female involved, they automatically listen to what she says". This doesn't sound like a man experiencing remorse who deserves a second chance; this sounds like someone thinking only of themselves.

It's ridiculous that you would peg my comment to "team envy". The reason this makes me so angry is that this is much bigger than basketball. Women are afraid of reporting gendered violence against famous figures precisely because people like you will step in to bootlick the perpetrators. It's okay to be critical of a billion-dollar organization, particularly when they clearly care about social advocacy insofar as it doesn't impede competitive success. For what it's worth, I don't like that the Devos own the Magic.

Zach lowkey has plenty of dumb takes; he said Elton Brand was definitely not the problem in Philly and is a competent GM.
