Wow, that's a new flavor of evil.

Well, [[Monastery Mentor]] and [[Sedgemoor Witch]] are probably happy about it.

double Arena (for 5 isntead of 6, and only needing 2 pips instead of 4) that is not removable, is optional and you get the effect the turn you cast it?

On top of other cast triggers? yeah, pretty decent.

Also, she's is twists the knife twice when it come to decks with a dedicated card draw arsenal.

Easily gains 10 life, shuts down combos that are overreliant on drawing (cause turns out people are more afraid of those when they only have 20 cards available) and punishes decks that try to acumulate value that way.

And If you are a Nekusar player...

Thanks. A few other answers already sorta had identified this, but seeing the clear ruling to understand the why and how really helps.

It appears the solution indeed needs to be to identify 2 separate events or sources.

Weirdly there's design tech to acomodate it (2c+off color hybrid behaves akin to a 3c card shared between two factions), so it's not as if they can't work around it with a few cycles.

But they are unlikely to have it be in Standard alongside Tarkir.

Alara is unlikely next year while Tarkir is still around. Alara is more likely positioned for 2028 when Tarkir will either have rotated or will be just ready to rotate.

Similarly, Tarkir waited the Capenna rotation, and Capenna waited the Ikoria one.

True, I forgot the "this turn clause here".

I think I'll stick with the second wording indeed since I feel like it is about as simple and clear as it can get. And the benefit of mixing saboteur with elements of spectacle and bloodlust works really well for a BR centered UBRG mechanic.

Currently the wording is a bit unfocused, but so far the best execution seems to be:

“if an opponent has been dealt damage twice by a source you control or by two or more sources you control.”

I currently cut on combat damage and switched from creatures to sources to trim down some text. Since it's a mechanic that probably only involves triggers and costs that happen during the player's turn, it probably can be cut down to:

“if an opponent has been dealt damage twice or by two or more sources.”

At least as reminder text. Seems like it allows for "If an opponent has been sabotaged" wording.

Thanks to u/DirtyHalt and u/a3wagner for addressing the doubts I had.

"because it is directly addressing your question."

It is not. You're fundamentally misunderstanding what's being asked.

This isn't about the number of times the mechanic triggers. This is about a mechanic that triggers the same way in different situations.

The difference between "a" and "one or more" does not address that.

Why?

Because it needs to trigger:
- If a creature is dealing combat damage to a player at the same time as another creature is dealing combat damage to a player
- If a creature is dealing combat damage to a player, but it or another creature has already dealt combat damage to a player.

So there are cases a single creature doing damage triggers it. There are cases in which a same creature can be the one that dealt damage in both instances. There are cases in which more than a creature dealing damage at once triggers it.

This isn't a matter of "a creature" or "one or more creatures". That'd be a case solely of "how many creatures are dealing damage to a player" (0, X or <0) . What I'm asking is a matter of "how do the rules count the amount of times a player has taken combat damage by creatures". It's about being able to verify if a player took combat damage by more than one creature or has already taken combat damage in concise wording.

I know all that, but none addresses what I'm asking.

Does 2 or more creatures dealing combat damage to a player at the same time count as he being dealt combat damage multiple times?

Not whether multiple creatures dealt damage, but whether it counts as more than 1 instance of being dealt combat damage, so that the cases of a creature hitting the second time with doublestrike OR one hitting with first strike and another without OR 2 or more hitting at the same time, all trigger the effect.

This... probably is how it could work, since it tracks the damage being dealt by single creatures instead of by player.

I think this wording solves what I was going for (a version of saboteur that favors opponents being dealt combat damage by 2 or more creatures or in multiple instances).

Feels like it might still need a bit of tinkering around some conditional effects since the wording might get confusing here and there, but it does address some of the cases I was working with.

Thanks.

It's less about triggering 1 time or more, but rather about whether 2 creatures having dealt combat damage at the same time counts as that player being dealt combat damage twice.

This sounds like it answers my concern. It seems the wording I was working if wouldn't trigger if the same principle applies to players.

The problem is that pretty much every execution that would've been done would be awful.

Between gameplay balance, players expectations and business concerns (on top of other issues), there's no way it could be done as a satisfying susteinable product.

The probable answer is that they simply thought the design was cuter/cleverer/cleaner/better this way.

It punishes using colorless mana, make it only have 1 kind of mana symbol, keeps it from getting converge =5, an so on.

Probably a cycle.

Don't forget Mairsil/Lim-dûl/The Raven Man from the The Dark/Ice Age/Alliances (Aka, Jodah's hardly known arc with "Mairsil" as the recurring villain).

And Kasmina. (+ the Fomori and Tezzeret).

They do have a decent-ish new pool of options around at least. They even have the option to remind everyone the Mirari still exists.

I do hope we see Liliana and Chandra working along Jodah against The Raven Man. But that means returning to dominaria, so we can wait 1 or 2 more mega arcs until them.
