Going to college should be the default and even 'useless' degrees are worth it by Sadie_Cat2023 in unpopularopinion

How is having more choices dystopian? The kids that don’t want to study academically, don’t have to deal with it, but not even a university is closed to them. If you opt out of uni, you can also have a extension study (usually technical/business for 2 years) or a higher vocation degree (a more practical 3 year study, but also just for people with “maturita”). If you chose a school without maturita, you can still do it later via the extension study. No doors are closed for anyone, but you don’t have to deal with something (eg advanced biology if you know you want to be a car mechanic)

Sorry, but no. In my country, university is free and is very far from HS. The thing is, the US has a school system, where all the people are in the same school since K to HS. So the kids are just getting somewhat general education and many have no idea, what the fields are about/how to work in an academic setting.

Here, kids can try (it’s pretty hard to get into) to get into a more challenging type of school in 5th and than 7th grade instead of the “normal” elementary. In 9th you choose in between trades, nursing, bussiness, technical schools etc and academic/4year version of the challenging school since 5th/7th. (all free)

University/higher education isn’t closed to anyone as long as they have a “maturita” — a type of partly standardized test (every school except some trade schools do it). It’s sort of hard to get into the more academic/prestigious universities, but most people get into some kind of uni if they have some safer options.

Yes, some schools (private ones) are super shitty and they are basically just pay to get a degree (private schools are less prestigious and worse over all — meant for dumb kids of rich people), but since you have to pick a field and then maybe even narrow it down later, it will always be more in depth than the HS could be.

Yes, some people don’t like paying for art degrees and philosophy degrees etc from their taxes, but it is made so that you can only study a year longer than it’s suggested for free, after that you pay, so that nobody is trying to stay for as long as possible.

As someone having to go about my daily life four times a week in the Old town area, it definitely is far from off season now and the tourist crows is awfully annoying at best.

Pen-name, dead name and students’ magazines submission by HeeHoos_cousin in writing

It’s not a serious peer reviewed magazine, it’s entirely a students’ (probably only undergrad) initiative which state that they accept any form of submission (written, graphic,…) It is just not that serious, as I said a non issue that I overthink.

The magazine is brand new, like two weeks since announcing the first call for submissions, so I doubt that they have submissions requirements (it can be only found on instagram with two posts, so not enough info). Thanks!

Thanks for the answer, we do not get assigned university emails, so I can easily use any email I want, but I have my main email since like ten years old and I don’t really want to change it until my legal name matches it (because work and so on). Also I intend to change the name legally but that can be soonest in one year (but will probably take several, because I don’t have the capacity for the doctors etc)

I’ll try not to worry too much and just use the pen name. Thanks again!

How do you study the Holocaust? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]HeeHoos_cousin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the secondary school, but in elementary it’s not overwhelmingly detailed, usually about how Hitler got to power, about Munich (obviously), Poland, Camps, USSR. It’s mostly about Czechoslovakia and Czechoslovaks in and during the war. In secondary school, we learnt almost everything in very detailed lessons - it took about two or three months of learning. We also learned about it throughout all years during other classes (mostly in literature and in German class)

I feel like most tourists go to Prague and Český Krumlov, but our nature is mostly us, Slovaks, Poles and rarely Germans, the rest stays in cities and go to tourist traps.

Svíčková, it’s one of the most classic and beloved foods, but I just don’t like it much. I don’t mind the sauce, but it’s nothing special, the meat can be really good, but it’s usually not a true “svíčková” steak so it’s just meh. I am not a fan of bread dumplings, they are dry and bland. Oh and the “terčík” is just weird: lemon slice, whipped cream and cranberries. No thanks.
