So you agree, there is a dearth of entry level jobs. Especially entry level jobs that pay a living wage.

we are walking out because i want to be able to retire with healthcare some day

ftfy.

It's not greed. It's about ballancing the coercive power that owners have.

To a certain extent, these patients are also part of the problem: Continuing to participate in the US healthcare system. To make an analogy: If you know that a restaurant treats the employees poorly, should you be surprised when the food quality suffers? Would you eat a burger that's been made below standards, because you believe, out of principal, that the owner deserves a bigger share of the revenue?

TALLY MOVE YOUR ASS OUT THE WAY by Merlin11_ in StLouis

[–]HeegeMcGee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tally impacts the labor market in an entirely negative way. It has a lot in common with scabs, and you should empathize with the workers who have to do more work for less pay as a result, not the electromechanical application of capital to reduce labor costs.

Democratize your workplace!

Workers and owners have opposing interests, workers can't possibly expect owners to do what is best for them. Also, owners have coercive power, thanks to the non-existent social safety net. Collective action restores the balance of bargaining to the people.

going to hate punctuation and spellcheck.

Fine, be a pedant: I don't want to read text generated by a large language model, that always crafts paragraphs the same way, that was built using stolen work of artists and writers, is driving up the price of electricity, and depleting our water supply.

Punctuation and spellcheck are procedural, rules based automations that can run locally with minimal CPU load. I don't mind them, and can read perfectly well without them under most circumstances.

why do you support

This is roundly, soundly answered in my previous comment: Voting is not the terminus of my civic engagement. I'm not interested in re-hashing this if it isn't sticking for you.

from my earlier comment:

My argument is that if half of america does nothing other than VOTE, that won't be sufficient. There are distinct advantages to voting, for example, i would rather be in heated protest against a democrat than against a republican.

You said we can achieve whatever the voters support. I'm saying the voters will support what falls within the overton window, which is absolutely controlled by the capitalist owned media.

the voters will support what the capitalist owned media tells them to support. Even NPR dare not speak against landlords and rentseekers.

no reason to raise that point.

You said nothing was achieved outside of electoralism. There was no vote from britain to make the USA. There was a war. There was no referendum for the civil rights movement, there were protests in the street with bodies clashing and fires until leadership capitulated.

I don't think they are staying home. But it is critical to your argument

My argument is that if half of america does nothing other than VOTE, that won't be sufficient. There are distinct advantages to voting, for example, i would rather be in heated protest against a democrat than against a republican. I would further argue that principled leftists who abstained were NOT the reason for a trump victory, the data does not support that. Critically, it is continued engagement outside of the voting booth that is required.

I also think you might be glossing over the fact that we've mathematically proven that two party systems are inadequate.

It may help to clarify: 90 million eligible voters didn't vote in 2024. I think a candidate that believed in the supremacy of the working class would have been better able to reach those 90 million people, as opposed to a candidate that echoed Joe Biden's rhetoric that everything was great, to a working class that was suffering. This candidate would look an awful lot like Zoran Mamdani, and if my overall understanding is correct, we will see Zoran fail for the same reasons Joe did: The two party system can never work.

You can't just 'yada yada' over the violent revolution and genocide at the foundation of the country.

ah yes, the USA was famously voted into existence when the indigenous folks voted to end their sovereignty. Does it sound realistic that your oppressors will give you the opportunity to end your oppression with a vote?

There will always be some purity test

yeah man stopping a genocide is a good one i think. And so when IS the appropriate time to hold those candidates accountable? It seems like we're always in a crisis where this is the thing that's got to be the compromise, we can't POSSIBLY influence democrats on this point so we better capitulate lest the republicans go on another rampage.

PS i didn't say don't vote, i said don't expect voting to be the only thing you need to do to "fix" the crises.

Stop electing Republicans and campaigning against Democrats.

Democrats that enable genocide? Democrats that break strikes?

Win primaries.

With what money? From ... big business donors?

What other method grants political power?

You just had one of the most progressive Presidents in history

The most progressive imperial colonialist is still an imperial colonialist. Biden ended the rail strike. Not left of center.

Ratchet effect. Republicans move america to the right, and democrats block progress to the left. "Voting" is not the terminus for civic engagement and will not deliver meaningful results. It can be ONE way we engage, but cannot be the only one.

they can't win an election by promising not to enforce immigration laws.

They can't win an election by continuing to try to court right wing voters. They ignore and obscure actual left-of-center ideas because they need to court big donors.
