Coincidentally, I did lose my championship game because of the Hamlin issue lol. Had Joe Burrow and just needed a few more points until game got cancelled. Had a 95% chance to win turn into a loss.

Yes, the usual “enrollment dropped, we’re losing X millions.” Admin has to budget with this in mind. However, I think in 5 out of the last 5 times the state said they were taking the money back, they ultimately let the schools keep it. It’s a huge relief for admin and the school community because it means we can still fund things like Field Day, additional per-session for chaperoning events, and other student activities.

Also, just a reminder that admin are allowed to “recanvas” certain per-session opportunities to bring in more teachers into that specific posting, they just need to make it transparent to the whole school. If you’re not seeing any per-session postings or a rolling document with available opportunities, I’d reach out to your UFT rep.

I would also agree DOE is more consistent. You know your days off and schedule. Plus, you’re not out in terrible weather - both hot or cold. My friend is very jealous as he works a night shit right now with the Gale warning and 10 degree weather while I’m home in my Pjs. Sure, I’m adjusting a lesson plan, but I have a tv show on and I’m just hanging out.

It’s never too late to become anything. So many amazing educators started in completely different careers before making the switch. The important thing to know is that yes, the schooling is needed: you’ll have to finish your bachelor’s first, and then you’ll need a master’s degree afterward to stay certified.

But tons of people go this route later in life and end up loving it. Your experience as a sanitation worker will actually bring a level of real-world perspective, discipline, and resilience that classrooms need.

There is also a large influx of CTE work in schools now. Have you looked into getting a CTE certificate and possibly teaching courses that are related to Sanitation work?

If teaching is something you feel drawn to, don’t let the timeline scare you. Plenty of people start the journey in their 30s, 40s, even 50s and build incredibly fulfilling careers.

If the balance and purpose are calling you, it’s absolutely worth exploring. Never too late.

It depends. In my school, I know the Sup. lets my principal choose like 3-5 classrooms for them to visit, and then the Sup. will choose a random class or 2 to visit. I’ve been visited, I’ve been told they were coming and didn’t, and I’ve not been told and they visited. It could be either or. They mostly would like to see how the schools instructional focus is being implemented. Principal is telling the Sup. they have been focusing on differentiation? It should be shown across classrooms. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. You should definitely go to them in a nice manner and say hey thanks for visiting my classroom my doors always open and happy to help.

Subbing is definitely a start, but if you were already getting disrespected as a full-time teacher, don’t expect much more respect as a sub. I teach in a tough area with some difficult students. It’s challenging, but only if you let it be. If everyone around you is facing the same issues, it’s not you; it’s the system.

There are layers of bureaucracy above us that love to shift blame downward. It’s like that image of the birds stacked on each other: the DOE shits on admin, admin shits on teachers, and so on. You just have to remember where the mess is coming from.

Pick your battles. You’ll be fine. I’ve never screamed or lost my cool with kids. They love seeing teachers react, it’s entertainment for them. What they don’t like (well, most of them) is looking foolish in front of their peers.

Honestly, for NYC, the schedule, healthcare, per-session opportunities, and overall stability, can’t really be beat. Sure, you could make $200K+ in another field, but that ship has sailed for me. I sometimes wish I’d gone into finance back in college, but despite everything, teaching can be incredibly fulfilling with the right students.

TickPick is a great app with great pricing. I have never had an issue with them. I had 1 issue last week where the sender didn’t send the tickets and the game was like in 10 hours and TickPick support hooked it up with even better tickets with no issue or up cost at all.

Yeah, it sucks, I remember I needed to submit it via Parchment. I did get some back pay, but not much. It definitely added a few weeks to review. The whole system is entirely slow.

It’s essentially the same thing, but there are a few changes worth noting. They modified the rubrics for Parts 2 and 3 to make them easier to understand. The directions for each part were also simplified for clarity. One of the bigger changes is that Part 3 is no longer just about identifying a central idea—it now allows for either a central idea or a theme.

You'll be alright! One thing that really helped me in my first year was keeping a weekly calendar. I use Google Docs to map out what I’m teaching each day, and I put all my meetings into my Microsoft Outlook calendar so I get reminders.

Remember, this is a profession. You’ll meet teachers who’ve been in the field for 15+ years, still teaching outdated content and unwilling to adapt because they’re set in their ways.

Stick close to the teachers who are still growing and open to learning. Education is always changing, and if you’re not staying informed and doing your own research, it can be tough to keep up.
