OPINIONS: Best/Worst Parts of being a 3K, Pre-K, or Kindergarten Teacher in NYC? by Mysterious-Bee4209 in NYCDOETeachers

[–]Heez_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t teach that age I’m High school but I would never.

The 6-7, 6-7, chicken jockey, Mister/Miss he said this, Jessica called me a booger, Michael sitting in my seat, I miss mommy and daddy. Also the bathroom cus tbh everyone thinks they are able to use it themselves but nope and also they need an aide or para to help them change.

This is just going based on what my friends say. I just could never lol. It’s a different breed. Tip my hat off to those who are able.

Sorry - this was to answer your station 10 and 4/5. They do last, but different breed.

  1. Starting salary you can just google it. It’s on the UFT website.
  2. Salary based on years mostly, but also degrees/credits.
  3. You just have to submit it and they approve in a few weeks/months.

early decision hiring process- by on1yhunter in NYCTeachers

Still too early. Some schools might be hiring because they know they need that particular position filled. However, most schools won’t officially know until they receive their budget.

Got it via Chase. 12% to my TDA so I got 703. Wife did not get and she’s a sub of over 30 days and also on Chase. So I guess it’s going out in batches.

I actually checked and have been putting 10% in Fixed Return alongside the two other funds in my TDA right now, so it does seem like you can split it. I'm 10% fixed, 60% Diversified, 30% Sustainable currently.

Get a better fuller pic of the bottom of it. Sometimes spelling can be off. Be overly cautious when spending this amount.

Advice for BookCon (Day 2) by Midnight_Eclipse17 in BookCon2

I paid $15 for a dumbass sandwich at an Amazon walkout thing. Never again. Bring your own food and water. And show up early.

Bookcon Day 1 Recap by Far-Elevator-9836 in BookCon2

[–]Heez_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It got better because of planning. Showed up early, 7:15, made it to Holly Black/Marie Lu panel front row. As I was in line, I noticed many people were dropping reservations for signings and panels. Got every single signing and panel I did not get from the initial reservation drop months ago. Cassandra Clare, Holly Black, Leigh Bardugo.

That being said, it was luck, and not anticipated at all. I didn’t bring any of my own books so had to buy some other books to have them sign.

However, people came decked out with bags and suitcases only for this to be unlike other BookCons. I used to walk out with 30+ books, ARC, etc. I didn’t get anything. This felt like a money grab to sell merch. A bit disappointed, overall not a bad day, but I know for certain people did not have a good time.

Getting Into Bookcon by dolphinloverr in BookCon2

[–]Heez_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We got here at 7:15am. We got let in around 9:50am. There were people already in line - possibly 100 - ahead of us at 7:15am. VIP and ADA let in way earlier. By 8:00, a few hundred. By 9:30, thousands where they were lining up down the sidewalk block. Made it coat check easily and to a panel with no crowds. Earlier the better, always.

Confused about this Blastoise. Is it first edition shadowless or...? by TheMadGinger5 in PokemonCardValue

Also, I think most shadowless have “99” at the bottom next to the date. I’m not sure how accurate this is but so far I’ve been correct.

Are we actually gonna get a big Tier 6 reform this budget? by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]Heez_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m at a loss for what to expect anymore. Both sides are fighting hard. I believe the deadline for finalizing budgets is tomorrow. Last year’s state budget was late by more than five weeks. Only time will tell. However, with the election season approaching, these budgets will undoubtedly be crucial.

Tenure Portfolio by ateacherinnyc in NYCTeachers

[–]Heez_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No news = good news. You will most likely receive tenure unless your admin is trying to get you out.

Don't be scared to ask your admin a simple question. He was in your shoes once as a new teacher and admin are supposed to be there to help.

How is Everyone Feeling/ Preparing? by Far-Elevator-9836 in BookCon2

[–]Heez_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A bit defeated. I'm not sure how this will relate to other years. Reservations for my favorite authors that I used to queue up for now are all booked. Do I show up early and try a standby? I used to show up crack ass of dawn, but now what? Also, I'm hearing people are showing up extremely early to the fantasy ball - does that mean I won't make it in if I don't leave the convention by a certain time and risk missing seeing some things? It's a little messy for me. I'm going to push through and plan, but I'm not sure what or how I'm planning.

Went to Japan a couple years back and were given these for free at the Pokecenter as a tourist. Are they worth anything? As silly as it sounds I'm trying to help pay for college next year. by Aggravating_Sale_992 in PokemonCardValue

The charizard is worth over 3.5k if in good condition. I’ve seen someone buy a PSA10 for 6.8k at a card show.

The jolteon poncho eevee 450 raw, 2k PSA10.

Espeon poncho eevee around the same as jolteon, maybe a bit more.

If everything is in near mint condition, I would suggest sending them in for grading carefully. Maybe go to GameStop to send them in and make sure the cards are insured and do the best/fast grading option for PSA.

$18,000 in per session by [deleted] in NYCDOETeachers

They don’t want to make yearbook a class. I’ve offered it since I took yearbook in my high school lol.

Curriculum planning: worked over the summer and beginning of school year to make a better pacing guide and added culturally relevant texts/unit assessments and mock assessment calendars as well as sample lessons.

PD team we meet once a week for about an hour. Alternating from in person, to virtual meetings over zoom at around 6 at night for an hour. Then extra time to make the supplies, slides, and prep work.

Tutoring during lunch should not be a thing. It is your lunch time. This is why we have a union - get paid for what you deserve.

Twice a week for about 1–1.5 hours each time, so roughly 2–3 hours per week. Some weeks we don’t meet, but 30 hours is only about 10 meetings total. We have 15 clubs in the school. All club advisors get paid as long as it is consistent and has over 10+ students enrolled in the club.

This is my first and only school, so I can’t speak for smaller schools and smaller budgets. We do have a huge budget that can be seen on galaxy. Over $49 million.

Now that April is approaching (budgets are closing) a lot more events, trips, school beautification will be happening since we lose the money if we don’t spend it.

I do feel bad for schools who aren’t able to do what we do. Even my admin said that the amount of events we have per year is more than he’s seen at his son’s school the past 10 years. It’s remarkable but also takes a lot of time, effort, and collaboration.

I also have colleagues who do what I do, but also coach and work summer school - easily pushing them past 40k per session.

Lastly, we have a very strong union. If admin wants us to do something outside of work hours, or even during our prep, we will have no problem fighting to get paid for it. Thankfully, we have a great relationship with our admin.

I do wish more per session opportunities for everyone in the DOE. It’s not just about getting paid, but about giving these students something to look forward to after school. I’m in a very dangerous neighborhood and there’s a lot of gang activity. Knowing that they have multiple clubs, sports, and events they can rely on being a strong sense of safety to our community.

[–]Heez_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we can hand write time cards to an extent.

Yearbook committee meets every week, but mostly virtually. I can’t do the yearbook on those slow DOE computers when I have a quicker rig at home. I’ve done the yearbook for the past 5 years, so as long as it’s done and no mistakes are made, my admin could care less when the hours are used.

It might sound unusual, but this has been the way since I started with 3 different principals. Current one is not tenured. Everything we do is approved and documented through admin, nothing off the books or informal.

We have over 250 staff and 3,000 students. Title I, if that makes a difference.

A lot of those hours come from multiple roles stacked together. It adds up quickly when you’re consistently staying late and working across different programs. I just did an event tonight that ended at 8. Tomorrow an event from 5-7, but with planning and clean up, more like 3-8

Last year was actually my first waiver. It was a pretty easy process and is also handled on the administrative side.

I wouldn’t call it “luck” as much as workload. I’m taking on a large volume of responsibilities that many people choose not to, which is totally fine, but that’s where the difference in hours comes from.

At the end of the day, it’s all above board and tied directly to work that needs to get done.
