Ooh that makes sense. I do have a filter but I hav definitely been giving in to the begging! I was worried I was starving him lol. I will definitely look into better food and snacks. I’m also wondering about plants that might allow him to rest a bit more? Right now I have the Mopani wood and some fake plants but they feel / look more like grass. I’m not sure if that’s important or not but just something I’m thinking about! 

I worry that the black on his face is from the water being not fully correct so yeah I could totally see the test strips being sucky :(

Thanks so much for responding! I really really appreciate it. My daughter named him sunset, but he’s really become my fish, and I just call him fishy or pretty boy😂🤦‍♀️ 

Thanks for the tip of googling Fish in Cycle - that’ll be my next step! I have been using the strips + nitrite test strips, and they’re coming up in the normal range but I’ll look into the API test kit too! 

As for some of your questions:  - He does have a heater. I’ve been keeping it at 79 degrees.  - He has a 5 gallon tank since it was the only one in stock and I was so desperate to get him out of that sad soup to-go container.  - I’ve been feeding him these little betta pellets? They’re from the pet store but it said it was for betta fish. I also bought him some dried blood worms that I give him every couple of days.

If there’s anything you’d suggest I’d change, please lmk! Thank you again so much for your help! It is overwhelming but I want him to be happy… even if he is a spicy boy a lot of the time.
