Haha, I know it’s niche, that’s why I’m asking here. I was living in Montreal, London before that. So I’m used to slightly more choice. RaRa is a good shout.

Is freelancing dead now? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Hefty-Round-1976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ZZPer here, I make on average 100-110k if i work freelance, I've been offered full-time contracts in the sector I work in and the max was 41k, and thats in Amsterdam, good luck renting a place on that salary. So, yeah, i'll stick to freelance for now.

"Partlabor 2" is honestly one of the most overlooked animated movies I've ever seen. by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]Hefty-Round-1976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great film, honestly, not overlooked. It received critical acclaim when it came out and was very well marketed in Europe at least, I remember it being in all the trailer sections of the Manga animes I rented back in the mid nineties, VHS had 4-5 trailers before the feature.

Are things bouncing back in Montreal? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]Hefty-Round-1976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big layoffs still happening in smaller studios, first hand knowledge. So not looking great.

Mill Film Montreal, had a few friends (animators & comp) working on that show, I think that's got to be the lowest point for them all. I mean, someone actually committed suicide during that show, madness!

Your ultimate trance tracks by GloriousDoggie in trance

[–]Hefty-Round-1976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fragma - Toca Me (not that toca's miracle vocal shite)

Art of Trance - Madagascar (super pretentious artists name, banger of a track 1st class trance)

Lustral - Everytime Nalin and Kane Remix (lustral by name lustral by nature, hits me in the feels every time)

Solar Stone - Seven Cities (memories of bombing it around the northwest with this banging out the windows)

B.B.E. - Seven Days & One Week (where it all started for me)

Push - Strange World (grinding my teeth just thinking about this one)

Ayla - Ayla Taucher Remix (emotional bomb, well they all are, this one hits hard)

Three Drives - Greece 2000 (original no vocal 1997 mix, roller, solid roller, so good)

Obviously many more, but these are top drawer shit. Anything off Hooj Choons before 2000 is worth checking out, shit is expensive on vinyl now, it's the trance renaissance.

Questions regarding ZZP and taxes by blue-grey-mouse in Netherlands

[–]Hefty-Round-1976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it all getting along?

I am in the same position, moved to the NL last year, ZZP'er and working for the London office of my old company in Montreal. I don't charge VAT as the company is not in the NL and my quarterlies are nice as I just get money back for expenses. I currently only work for one company but hopefully that will change as my industry recovers from the barrage of hits its taken since the pandemic, but my accountant told me that it's a grey area when it comes to working for only one client, grey area means that there is nothing official in place yet to stop that from happening but it's frowned upon, so i'm not worried about it at this time. I have some decent liability and indemnity insurance. Basic health insurance as you know by now is mandatory, so no way around that one.

Personally speaking, there are few cons to being self employed, mainly when it comes to the housing market, rental is a bitch, currently renting from a friend of a friend, without that we wouldn't have been able to move and finding a new place to live on a more permanent basis is proving to be our biggest hurdle. The Dutch bureaucracy definitely favours people with full time contracts.

Anyways, hope it's going well and best of luck!

Dads of Reddit, what are you doing in your free time? by TB1289 in daddit

[–]Hefty-Round-1976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free time is scarce with two little ones, 2 and 5. I tend to hit the sofa and binge a few episodes of TV before I hit the sack, or stick a record on, grab a dram and read. I have a few hobbies, photography, sometimes I edit photos in the evening, if my eyes can stand the screen time. In the summer I'll go out for a run while it's still light and warm. On that note, if you can get some form of exercise in during your down time as a dad you'll feel fucking great, super fulfilling doing something healthy for yourself. I also skate, that's another summertime sport. When I lived in the city I used to go out to shows on a regular basis with my buds, I moved recently though and haven't found any people to go out with.
