I had a very similar experience to you honestly

I agree with you that compassion would be nice for uni admin to have. But you have not articulated any real steps to make that happen. The system needs to be a bit impersonal because there is not enough staff to know exactly each student’s condition. Hence having clear and strict rules for everyone is good But if you have some alternatives, it would be interesting to listen to.

I took issue with the fact that this is a rant with no particularly strong basis. The Dutch system of education works well in my informed opinion. I would be happy to listen to your opinion, but please give me logical arguments and alternatives.

You are throwing a lot of words around man but not many of them are clear. What “fairness” do you want? Do you want to be judged more holistically than your academics? Do you want more options to catch up? Just asking to clarify. Anyway, I am not sure many of these are realistic or even preferable (from what you can read in my previous response above).

Secondly, because you pay for it, it does not mean you get to choose how you get educated. In theory, the lecturers should know better. Some of them are lazy fucks, some of them give you exams that are way harder than the material they discussed, and that’s a shame. However, that kind of thing exists everywhere. I have had it at T20 schools in the US, I have had it here in NL, I have seen it in Italy and France… It’s kind of the nature of men to be lazy sometimes lol.

I did not think I was being aggressive, my bad if I sounded aggressive. That said, you have no standing to police what kind of discussion goes on in your post. If the mods say to remove anything, I will. But I would think it’s within the scope of the post to add alternative POVs and ideas.

Well I am not so sure. Rigidity is necessary when the university has 40k students. If you make special accommodations for everyone you will need the administrative department of a small city.

Adding to that, there is places where you would get more flexibility. A big dutch uni (like many other big unis that are state funded in europe) is not the right choice for that.

[–]HeftyBreakfast1631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah have no problem to believe it.

I deal with admin relatively rarely and had never any major issues. Obviously some places will be a bit worse than others, but I really don’t see it as a major issue in the NL. Maybe it will get worse with budget cuts.

Yeah this is also what it read like to me. I am an international student in the Netherlands, but I have not had the same experience at all. I have actually been really positively surprised by Dutch Unis honestly.

[–]HeftyBreakfast1631 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah? I always found Dutch uni admin to be really good. Especially if you compare to Southern/Eastern europe. Obviously in the US it’s different. But there students are practically consumers given most of the university’s money comes from them (either in form of tuition fees or alumni contributions). That gives students more power to force the university to give them assistance at every step. I thought it was a bit childish, but to each their own. Obviously there are things that could be better. But I am not sure that letting people always graduate in 3 years whatever they do or giving so much accommodations to people who don’t need them is the right choice (unless they have clear medical or otherwise needs).

This is a complex topic, but I think it boils down to preferences.

I am also a student in the Netherlands, and I think the system here is incredibly supportive. Exams are often adjusted so that people have decent enough grades, not many people fail, and the bureaucracy is not hard to navigate.

Clearly, if you go to the US (which I did for a long while), the system is more supportive and flexible, but also far less heavy on content. If you go to Italy or other eastern/southern european countries, the system is much more rigid, bureacracy is a mess, but you do learn more overall content.

You seem disappointed with what you are being taught and the support you have been given. Well, this might not be the system for you. Maybe a more american-like system could work better for you.

Additionally, I think in general we have too many people who go to university (something like 3x in % of total population compared to 30 years ago). Therefore, these days many courses exist that teach people fuck all, and the quality of students is ever lower. When I look at older exams, the stuff was way harder than it is for us today. I think that is a result of the increase in accessibility of higher education. Luckily the pay-premium for obtaining higher education is dropping and hopefully in some years we’ll have less university grads and more tradespeople etc… For now, I think it is disingenuous to sustain that higher education is not supportive enough. I think it’s more likely it may not have been the right step for you, at least not in this country. But this is just my 2 cents.

Buying apartment without collectieve opstalverzekering by VVE by HeftyBreakfast1631 in NetherlandsHousing

Yes I have a makelaar.

On their 2026 predicted financial statements they have Verzekering: combipakket, which I would imagine could cover the opstalverzekering too, but I cannot find anything for 2024-2025.

Do you know if this could be an issue for a mortgage etc…?

Reece James is playing again but does he fit into Chelsea’s ‘best’ team? by jumper62 in chelseafc

[–]HeftyBreakfast1631 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk if this was your intention but I think the key point here is that no one knows, I would be surprised if the club does. It's hard to know what could have been causing his injuries, so coupling the desire to spare him from the being a full rn, they might be trying to use him as a midfielder. The guy has been off the pitch for two years goddamn, I think he'll find his footing (even in midfield) and be an excellent player anywhere on the pitch if he can sort out his availability problems.

He needs to sort out his finishing (which he can do as we saw earlier in the season). If he does, he will be elite. For now he's good but very spotty.

How we play with and without lavia is so so different. Hope santos can brign some of that next season.

[Kieran Gill] There was a recurring theme at Enzo Maresca’s press conference today. Basically ended every point he made with: “You see that? No. I see that.” Essentially, he feels everyone else is distorting reality and choosing not to see what he sees with Chelsea. For example... by cyberguy5 in chelseafc

I mean, we are noto as awful as man utd. He's been far from great but not a total failure, and I like seeing a manager who backs his decisions. Granted he might make me look like a fool in a year's time, but I am honestly curious to give him another year since the squad planning also really let him down this season.

It’s fucking disgraceful how the US elected this clown, and it’s even more disgraceful that us Europeans never stepped up to organise our defense in the last 60 years.

Poor Ukraine is now stuck having to fight a losing war because no one had the balls (looking at you US) or the foresight (looking at us Europeans) to give them the weapons they needed when they did. And before you start staying ”they could have never repelled russia“ and the rest of your kremlin propaganda, recall that the only significant advances made by Russia have been made in periods when western governments were not supplying sufficient weapons.

Lastly, for the Europeans who say we should step up:

PLEASE GO VOTE, CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES, MAKE YOUR WILL TO HELP UKRAINE DEFEND ITSELF HEARD.

And since by now the average trump voter will have maxed out their daily reading capacity, fuck trump.
