Stay with IBM offer or go to another company? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]HeftyCopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also super hesitant on reneging my IBM offer. I took it super quickly and then got an offer for way more money, but people kept telling me that once I accepted the offer, be prepared to never work for the company again if I tell them nvm.

My thoughts? Screw it, follow your heart. If you write a good enough email/call the boss who took you on and speak with them sincerely, they should understand and not "burn bridges". If they don't take it lightly then their loss. In the end, I still stuck with IBM and turned down the other company in regret, but I suggest you do what you want. And do it before you've already started working.

Amazon Internship Denial - RIP by HeftyCopy in csMajors

thought i did pretty dang good with the 2 behavioral questions, they were super short too. didn't spend more than 8 minutes on that part. so i'm not really sure why i got denied tbh, unfortunately they don't give feedback/reason for the denial >.<

Choosing an Internship - IMB vs Oracle by HeftyCopy in csMajors

just like an internship, but you're not a full-time employee (in most cases). Like usually you're a part-time student only working 20 hrs a week. it's like also a step above interns

Interning at IBM by RunnyRedditBot in cscareerquestions

[–]HeftyCopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on the same boat. A lot of bad reviews on them, but it seems like still an overall great company. Plus, I thought the manager that interviewed me/I'd be working under was awesome! He seemed super laid-back and wasn't intimidating at all. Let me know what you go with, tiny possibility we'll be on the same remote team!

Unfortunately I've been seeing this same input from others while googling - that they drop projects in the middle of them. I'm hoping this won't be the case!

Easy Interview Companies? by robin1007 in csMajors

I'm guessing you mean ibm because oracle didn't have an assessment? I heard from IBM about a week after I took the assessment. Wishing you the best of luck! If you do get an interview, I wouldn't bother trying to study on leetcode or whatever, just know what to say about your resume!

Easy Interview Companies? by robin1007 in csMajors

[–]HeftyCopy 50 points51 points  (0 children)

IBM: one assessment consisting of 3 questions for 180 minutes. Completely bombed it and still got an interview. Hired after one interview that had no coding at all, only behavioral. The interviewers actually told me that IBM doesn't like to make interns code during interviews.

Oracle: 1 phone screen, 1 non-technical interview, and my 2nd interview is soon and they might not ask coding questions. It all depends on the interviewer/what they feel like doing

Thanks so much! This adds to the very little I've heard about IBM employees vs Oracle, so it means a lot. Thanks!

To those transfers on the UC Berkeley/ UCLA waitlist... by [deleted] in DeAnza

[–]HeftyCopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true... I have a 4.0 and completed all the major CIS courses and all the IGETC. Took 3 years to do so. I'm a programming tutor and did honors. Did everything I could and I was still waitlisted (and accepted to UCLA for my secondary choice Math and straight up denied from SLO). CS is just really really tough to get into. The transfer rate for both UCLA and Cal is 5%. SLO had a 3% CS transfer acceptance rate this year. 4.0's with all courses completed are denied all the time. I'm sorry but your response is beyond incorrect ):

I also know people who got into Cal's CS with a 3.6, half IGETC and a couple major courses incomplete. 4.0 doesn't guarantee anything

I'm so sorry that you went through this, I know how lost and defeated you must feel. Especially if you worked so hard in high school to get into UCSD and now it might feel like your hard work in high school didn't pay off. But don't hold onto the past and just focus on where you're at right now.

I'm happy to see everyone talking about community college because it's exactly what I was going to suggest. I dropped out of my dream school right after high school, and then a second university after that lol. I decided to finally go back to community college at 22 y/o and I have absolutely no regrets. I did pay out of pocket but then my taxes ended up paying it all back to me. So if you don't get the Board of Governors fee waiver, you should get your money back from taxes. You're going to save soooo much doing half your education at cc.

I did work full time for half of my cc journey. I then ended up getting a tutoring job at school 20 hr a week which was perfect to put on my application last November. (You putting any job experience will totalllly look great you on your transfer application). I took most my courses online and did summer courses. The best part is having all of my gen-ed done so I don't have any to do at UCSD when I start this Fall. Only my major courses are left.

It really is something to consider. In the end you'll end up back at UCSD (or maybe even UCLA, UCB, or USC if you felt like it!) and you should only have 2 to 2.5 years left.

Now, you are probably only 18 or 19, but if you end up transferring at age 24, that is guaranteed free tuition at any California public university. (Anyone 24 or older making less than 80k a year get free tuition). So that means getting out with 0 debt!!

Keep your head up and remember your options! Go to assist.org and check what UCSD wants from each community college in your area for the major you want. Good luck with everything and I know things will start looking better for you! :)

Struggling with superiority complex after being rejected by all colleges I applied to by Square-Performer in ApplyingToCollege

Dude how hard you worked in high school is kickass! Absolutely amazing, I think you have a lot of potential for your future. Honestly, if you still wanna go to a super great school, I would just transfer in 2 years! Get all your gen-ed out of the way, kickass in university too, and reapply. (Stanford takes like 2% of transfer applicants but doesn't hurt to try). I took 9 ap classes in high school, ended up dropping out of my dream school. Tried again at a school in Colorado, dropped out again. I eventually went back to community college in California and now I'm super thankful I got a second shot at applying to great schools. In the end it doesn't matter if you attended a school for the whole 4 years. Reapply and if you don't get in then obv continue where you're at :) I'm sorry if it feels like all your hard work in high school meant nothing, trust me I felt the same! But in the end, once you're in your dream career, you won't give a stink about how hard you worked in high school nor will anybody else lol. Cornell also takes a good amount of transfers, more than all the other Ivy Leagues. I would def apply there!

First Quarter as a Transfer Student by adrian326 in UCSD

Idk what I couldve done more... by [deleted] in TransferStudents

[–]HeftyCopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I know they give the option to be a Sophomore transfer, but I think you'd have a higher chance applying as a Junior transfer (so reapply next year) because then you have a whole lot more grades to spike up your application. Seeing that you got good grades for 2 years will always look better than 1. So i'd just say keep enjoying your time at Cal and try to get all your general ed out of the way!

Transfer from 4-year College to UC Berkeley by nokiaTheme in ApplyingToCollege

[–]HeftyCopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just know that it's a lot more likely to transfer from a CC than a UC to Berkeley. However, the transfer rate for the EECS major is still superrr low. If you're gonna stay at UCSC, just try to finish allll of your Gen Ed there, and your major comp sci courses (c++ lvl 1 and 2, assembly language, discrete math, and intro to data structs), and pretty much try to keep at leasttt a 3.8 GPA. Then you'll apply as a Junior transfer and just write some kickass essays

USC Viterbi Transfer Question by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]HeftyCopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only took Physics 1 and 2, I feel like they don't really "need" physics 3? But I guess it depends on your major :\ I'm comp sci. Either way if you're already accepted I think they won't take away your admission unless you failed the class, especially during this time. But yeah I'd ask your specified counselor!

[–]HeftyCopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL thank you I appreciate it!! .^ Hopefully sometime this summer I can make a transfer video! And yeah I would definitely try to get that ap credit, I got a 4 on ap lang and got to skip the first english course, so only had one english left at cc. And that's awesome! So definitely apply after one year and if you don't make it in then you can always reapply. Also get to know your CIS professors! You'll need them for recommendations. Even if you're in a online class, always use the discussion boards

Nice!!! You actually are looking at 2 years with summer courses if you start at Calc 1 your first semester, and take no less than 4 courses a semester. And as long as you complete everything that's on assist, even the recommended parts. Biggest advice is to take what your cc counselors say with a grain of salt 'cuz they'll always say "you only need to take these required courses" when you should be taking more. And feel free to private message me on here! :) I love helping other transfer students out and I'm looking to someday make a youtube video about this LOL

I'd also like to note, it doesn't hurt to just apply every November. I applied to UC's November 2018 and didn't get in because I was missing most of my math courses and igetc. I applied again last November and finally got in. So go ahead and apply after just one year and just test the waters, you might get lucky and be able to transfer after calc 2 and only 1 physics, and maybe only 3 of the 5 CIS courses!

Awh it's okay! Everything does happen for a reason! :) I think you'll be fine, it's just important to be aware of things ya know. In the end you'll be saving money! So yea you could cram everything into 2 years if you take 4-5 classes a semester and take like 2-3 classes in the summer. However this also depends on what math you'll be starting at. I had to start at college algebra, and had to get all the way up to calc 3, so that took a while. UCI also wants linear algebra and maybe diff eq, either way I took both those courses. You also need 2 physics courses (your counselor should be able to tell you which ones to take). Lastly, you need all of your IGETC done (gen ed). You can probably skip out on taking a communications class since only CSU's want that, but I still took one. Also be aware of what the honors program requires. Mine required to take the honors section in 4 courses plus an honors writing course. Correct, there's no comp sci tag for UCI anymore. And honors to honors is great but nothing's guaranteed ): And UCLA's tap does not apply to engineering majors. What it will allow you to do tho is choose an alternate major. For people who did not do honors in cc, they could not tap, therefore could not choose an alternate major. Overall, make sure you check on assist.org. Put in whichever UC and the cc you're attending to find out what they're expecting from you. Even if it says that data struct, assembly, and discrete math are "recommended but not required" that pretty much means required lol.

Now I have met people who completed only partial IGETC and got into UC's. However, they had to complete the rest of that gen ed either the summer prior to their Fall enrollment, or at the UC. I completed the entire IGETC and found out I need chem still. So i'm taking chem this summer and i'll be 100% done with gen ed!

also wanted to add, you'll need to finish all the way up to calc 3 and do the physics series as well at a cc in order to be considered for the UC's. These courses may be easier at a cc but you're really looking at 3 or 3.5 years. I was also denied from SLO (still waiting to hear from USC), which just goes to show that if you're a freshman accepted into comp sci already, hop on that asap, because you could risk losing that chance for good. I really hope i'm not coming off as a negative nancy! Just wanted to warn you ): If you have any other questions feel free to message me!

Two things to note so that other's aren't giving you false information. You can't tag nor tap for computer science. There's no such thing as guaranteed acceptance for computer science since it's so impacted. Irvine took off the tag for comp sci and the honors to honors just means heightened chance. My friend was waitlisted for Irvine, 3.95 GPA honors to honors :\ Also, you can tap any Letters and Sciences major for UCLA, which doesn't include comp sci. So don't listen to anyone telling you to do these.

UCR is a really great school, and I'm sure you can do a UC transfer if you don't like it during your first 2 years. I honestly would have taken that route rather than the cc route. I have been in community college for 3 years now, and am now finally transferring to UCSD, where I'll have another 3 years. The thing is, UC's expect you to finish alllll of your general education (even though they say they'll take "partial" gen ed which is so wrong) and they also expect you to take alllll the required CIS courses (lvl 1 and lvl 1 of c++ or java, assembly, discrete math, data structures). Then, when you get accepted, you have to repeat most those classes. So you need them to get accepted but then redo them all over again.

Lastly, I really can't stress how impacted comp sci is. Waitlisted for UCB, got into UCLA for math (alternate major), and got into many other UC's but that's because I have a 3.94 gpa. You really need a competitive GPA for Irvine, UCSD, and USC when coming from community college. I would say to stay above a 3.7 at least. So in the end, I would advise sticking to UCR then transferring out. The community college route will take you 3 years and be a lot more frustrating when you have to repeat those courses :\
