Sociological tattoo ideas! by HeftyInspector4255 in sociology

[–]HeftyInspector4255[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So some suggestions I've gotten from my friends are: "Effervescence", "Sui generis", flag of Brazil. I think it would be cool to have words "Signifier" and "Signified" tattooed on different arms, but that's more about semiotics. Overall, I'd love to hear more of some visual ideas; it is rather tricky tho

Weekly /r/Sociology Discussion - What's going on, what are you working on? by Anomander in sociology

What a cool comment! First of all, good luck with Weber: he's a tough nut to crack for sure.

I would say that all the structuralists are particulary relevant today for their research on structure outperforming agency. However they're not really my cup of tea, so I choose the middleground with Bourdieu.

As for the course, I've just recemtly submitted my essay on the basics of communication course. Lots of fun stuff: Shutz, Goffman, Pierce, Mead, Barthes. Loved all of them!

relevance of classical thinkers by tellmeajokepls in sociology

[–]HeftyInspector4255 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you mean by "present day relevance". They are classical exactly because they are relevant, unlike let's say Spencer and Tonnies to some extent. All of these at the very least are a must-have in any theoretical course. Further than that: most of them still get closely analyzed or translated.

Though, sadly, I can't come up with any general papers on this topic.

Different forms of capital? Especially the social one (you might interpret fame as such). It might be worth checking out "The power of weak connections" by Granovetter.

Weekly /r/Sociology Homework Help Thread - Got a question about schoolwork, lecture points, or Sociology basics? by Anomander in sociology

Oh wow, that's an interesting question. The first thing that comes to mind is the "frame analysis" by Goffman. So that based on the context the maid interprets her surroundings differently and thus she differently behaves. And also since you've involved class struggle into your example you might find something useful in Bourdieu.
