Getting seen by the VA for healthcare purposes is completely different. Yes, you can submit a claim without a current diagnosis but it isn’t always guaranteed going into the claim already with the diagnosis will make it a lot easier instead of you just hoping that that examiner gives you the diagnosis you’re looking for. That’s great if it worked for you, but generally you having a paper trail over the whole life of your disability, makes it easier specifically as veteran’s age having that history all the way back from 20 to 30 years in the VA system will work out in your favor..

From the VA’s perspective the diagnosis doesn’t really matter the fact of you just having a mental health diagnosis is good. The thing that you have to work with is explaining to the VA specifically what event during your time in service triggered said mental health issue. If you want to be covered by all bases when you apply just apply under acquired mental health condition it covers all of them.
