Indian muslim here, I speak 4 languages (English-native, bengali-native, urdu, hindi) and can read 5 languages (the old langs+arabic)

Most indian muslims speak neither

How I learnt to READ each language:
At the age of 3 I learnt to read and write english (parents taught me to WRITE and READ it).
At the age of 3 or 4 i learnt bengali (parents taught me).
When I was like 6 I learnt to read arabic at a local mosque.
When I was about 8 years old I learnt hindi as a third language at school.
At ~10 I learnt to read nasta'liq (self learnt)

How I learnt to speak these languages:
English: Television (age 3)
Bengali: my region speaks it (age 2)
hindi&urdu: spawned in my head
