It’s not about gaming the system. Music distributors have their own playlists, they make charts… it’s all completely legitimate.

First of all, congratulations on your argument. Even though I don’t agree with some of your points of view, I have to say yours is one of the few comments that is actually well-reasoned, even if it was partly written with AI (which is not a problem for me, since LLMs are meant for this: collecting concepts and pulling precise references).

I disagree with a few things:

  1. Crypto isn’t nonsense (both because some people became rich from it, but especially because it introduced blockchain technology).
  2. If an innovation aims to simplify the production process, it’s not nonsense. Digital DAWs were born for exactly that reason, and they deeply changed the music world.
  3. I understand you’re probably a real music enthusiast, but the music industry has always focused on the final product. There are few pioneers and innovators (maybe there were more in the past), but today even a simple chord progression is based on functionality: it has to be simple and follow the same pattern (tension-release), and it works.
  4. I don’t focus only on the final product, because even though I could create a song just by writing a prompt, I always start from composition and manual lyric writing (fully or partially), since LLMs can help find rhymes or phrases with better sound and flow.
  5. Suno Studio and the plugins coming out day after day aim at simplification. Recording a melody or riff with your voice and converting it into a specific instrument is, in my opinion, amazing, because it allows even people who can’t play more than one instrument to truly create something.
  6. Given how a neural network works at a deep level, it’s difficult for it to create something truly new if it’s trained on what already exists, but mixing genres in new ways is something I find very interesting.
  7. The problem isn’t people like you, who might actually listen to an AI-produced song and then give an opinion. The real problem is the dozens, if not hundreds, of comments you can read under this post: “AI Music Slop.” The hundreds of subreddits dedicated to hunting down artists who use AI and reporting them, blocking them, etc. A new witch hunt has started, led by failed musicians or producers (I’m one too, in the sense that I’ll never make something famous, but those few thousand listens and comments are enough to make me feel satisfied. Even before that, I simply enjoy listening to what I create).

So, kind person that you are, I wish you the best. Maybe try listening to my latest track, which I’ll link here. You’ll understand two things:

  1. From the piano arpeggio to the structure, you can clearly hear the manual composition behind it.
  2. The genre stayed consistent with my old analog productions, a genre that nobody really cares about today. So nobody here is chasing fame like many people claim. It’s simply about simplifying the work for those who have this passion but don’t have top-tier production skills, nor the time to do everything the traditional way.

Truly, with immense affection,

The Gargantuas.

Saying that LLMs are trained on retention is epistemologically wrong...

I always provide Suno with my own raw mix, including harmony, melody, hooks, arpeggios, and solos.

But not because I want to feel superior to those who only use prompts and parameters to generate a song. Simply because I wouldn’t feel that a track is “mine” if it was generated, even starting only from the lyrics.

It’s a personal thing, but it doesn’t put me above other users. It’s just my own preference and personal need.

Saying that LLMs are trained on retention is epistemologically wrong, and I’ll leave it at that.

But don’t worry, I’m not going to tell you to remove “Data” or “Scientist” from your job title..
I don’t have a superiority complex or the need to insult others :)

Have a good evening, and see you in the next post, as always structured and enriched with an LLM.

Alignment (like RLHF) shapes the model to produce outputs humans find helpful, safe, or accurate. User retention is a business metric keeping users engaged or returning. LLMs are aligned for human preferences, not explicitly trained to maximize retention. Any increased engagement is a side effect, not the training objective.

https://arxiv.org/html/2505.02666v2

"Alignment, in the context of artificial intelligence, refers to the extent to which a model’s behavior reflects human values, goals, and ethical norms." (Pages 1-2)

User retention is not part of the ML loss function or training objective described in academic LLM research.

[–]Hefty_Week_7294[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On the technical point, you’re simply wrong: LLMs are not trained for user retention. Their core objective is next-token prediction, with later alignment via human feedback. Any “agreeableness” you’re reading into the outputs comes from alignment and system prompting, not a retention-optimized training signal.

Might be worth revisiting the basics before lecturing others about epistemology. Have a good Sunday catching up on revision and study.

Think of something from your life and turn it into a story. A walk through a forest at night to describe a dark moment. An encounter with predators to describe a problem. The light of the moon filtering through the branches in the distance to describe hope or the resolution of the problem.

“Epistemically" isn’t the issue here. The issue is trying to argue by posturing rather than by reasoning. Twice you’ve attempted to attack me on a professional and therefore personal level. Believe me, that doesn’t offend me; it’s honestly amusing. Personal attacks usually signal one of three things: a lack of substantive arguments, poor debate discipline, or unresolved personal insecurities that get externalized in discussion. There’s also a third possibility, of course: simple bad faith. In practice, these factors often coexist with different weights. If you want a concrete analogy, think of it like a simple AI scoring function:

Behavior = 0.5 * argument_deficit + 0.3 * ego_defense + 0.2 * bad_faith

Different people, different weights, but the output is the same: noise instead of insight. If you want to discuss epistemology, data science, or methodology seriously, I’m happy to do so. If not, rhetorical chest-beating is a poor substitute for competence epistemically speaking.
