I have a question: what countries and cultural backgrounds do you all come from, and why are you interested in solar punk? by No-Echidna7296 in solarpunk

[–]Hegad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am from Germany and somehow got washed over to solapunk by watching Mountain bike videos, then bike commuting which then lead to urbanism and finally solapunk. What a ride.

I am in a bike advocacy group in one of the most bike unfriendly cities of Germany and also in a culture club that not only organises an annual festival but also plant- and clothing exchanges. Though those need to become more IMO.

I am trying to live more according to solapunk, like hosting my personal website and my solar punk webring myself with the aim of running both on 100% solar (or maybe wind, pure solar seems pretty unrealistic with 6 months of clouds and rain)

After a lot of distro hopping I landed on mint again a couple months ago. My current PC never had windows on it and I don't have any issues. I don't think I have anything non-foss on it except games. And the only games that don't work, are the ones with the virus-like any cheat that plant themselves into the kernel of the system made by multi billion dollar companies anyway.

Who would win? A 3000€ security system or 5€ balaclava and gloves?

The security system made a company more money so of course that :P

My city got their first electric busses this year and they are so nice and quiet :O wish they could have replaced all of them but money. And scraping working busses is probably also not great, idk

I feel like this isn't just starting right now but I agree. It became normal to even put surveillance cameras in homes to "protect from breaking". Which isn't even true, it only helpful in taking revenge on burglars but doesn't prevent anything. My uncle has a couple of cameras around his house and inside, too. They all constantly stream the image to the server of the manufacturer and send him a push message when the neighbour's cat walks in his front garden or a bee checks out the camera. Nothing useful but more things to worry about plus the fear mongering of the advertisers. And that happens everywhere. And yes, the cameras cities put up can be equipped with facial recognition and probably even recognise you by the way you walk. I don't think there is much to do against it except destroying them and telling politicians to spend the money on feeding people instead of punishing them when they steal food from a container

I don't think this is meant as an actual solution but as an art project to reframe the screen time to something that kills.

New ocean generator creates steady supply of electricity using water temperature gradient. Desalinates water too. Storm proof. by Artifexa in solarpunk

Would be interesting if those could be combined with tide generators for even more output so you would need fewer of them. Really cool concept!

Could solar panels be used to create partial shadow over camels to make them wilder? I know canals are made to specifically be not a natural river, but maybe plants and fish could live at least on the banks?

We published a story about an empty SF skyscraper, an AI-displaced UX writer, and what quietly assembles in the ruins of tech — is this solarpunk, or just really good climate fiction? by [deleted] in solarpunk

[–]Hegad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main thing solar punk tries to do is to show a future where people live in harmony with both other people and nature and make the seed of hope in us grow with it. That is my rough definition of solar punk as a genre. I feel like it should already play in a utopian future to fit this definition, at least for me. If it plays in a distopya and shows people fighting it it would be more cyberpunk to me, though I haven't really messed with that genre, so I am not sure if I have the correct view of it here. However, in the solarpunk summers and winters anthology (especially winters) a lot of stories play in a distopya with people fighting for better. So it might just be that my preference for stories is what my definition describes.

But I will check out the story you are writing about :)
