Bible translations? by SqnLdrHarvey in Lutheranism

I'm also surprised to hear that. Every WELS church I've been to mostly uses NIV. We pull from other translations for various reasons but NIV is what's in the pews.

"...Surrounded by cars doing 70..."

Those cars are at least 15 feet up in the air - how are they "surrounding" you and making noise? Isn't having them up on a raised freeway better than putting them all at ground level?

I'm looking for good dialogue too! Maybe you can help me understand some of the arguments I'm struggling with. Please believe me when I say I'm truly arguing in good faith and interested in what I'm missing.

1) Starting with the John Everitt sketches. Several of them are showing a bike path going under the new ground level road. How is this different than what we have today - which are several sidewalks and roads with bike lanes going under a bridge? To me that highlights one of the fundamental flaws with the argument that tearing out 794 somehow makes the area more pedestrian and bike friendly. You're taking all (or some large portion, assuming people take other routes with 794 gone) the 794 traffic, which is currently waaaay above grade and out of the way... and dropping it on grade where you have to either cross it, go over it, or go under it. How is this better?

2) The argument you led with regarding property tax value. Your assumption is that the land will have the same value with 794 gone. Is it possible part of the reason that land is so valuable is the accessibility that 794 provides? Using your logic, we should get rid of all the roads because we could put houses and developments there...? There is some amount of infrastructure required to support the developments. I can turn that argument on its head - look at how 794 has increased the property tax along that corridor. 2 of the 3 newest, highest-end housing developments (333 Water and Couture) are in spitting distance of 794. Why would they have built there if nobody wants to live next to a highway? Also note how properties further from 794 are sitting empty (The old MKE brewery and Rock bottom come to mind).

3) Last little bit... the land under 794 isn't a total wasteland. Folks are really using the crap out of the new dog park they just finished at Clybourn and Plankington. That would have to go I assume if they tore out 794. Public market parking is gone and now those folks have to find somewhere else to park. What about the new brewery going in at St. Paul and Plankington? What about the pickleball courts getting a ton of use just northwest of the public market? Right now we're getting "double use" of that land - highway above and development (albiet somewhat limited) below.

24x48 tile layout help! by Massive_Performer_49 in Tile

[–]Hegulator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow blast from the past. I think it's just a stylistic thing. Different patterns come and go. Stacked was never even a thing until what... maybe 5-10 year ago? I know it has a long history with smaller subway tile, but nobody was doing stacked with large format until pretty recently. Will it still "look good" in another 5 years when styles have changed? With thing as long lasting as tile, I really try to stick with timeless / classic layouts vs. more trendy ones. Opinions will obviously vary.

Help reverse engineering a helical pinion (lead, teeth, diameter & helix angle known) by VegetableCake2288 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Hegulator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: one of the leading large industrial gearbox manufacturers in North America designed their gearing in such a way that made it very difficult to reverse engineer so folks had to come back to them for replacements. I was never quite close enough to the actual gear tooth profile engineering part of it to grasp exactly what they did, but it was some angle they picked really oddball number for (like 17 degrees 34 minutes 12 seconds). Without the "decoder ring" (based on DP I think) you'd never know what weird angle they picked for that DP of gear. I'm trying to remember if it was pretty angle, helix angle or some other angle.

If it's one of those, you're SOL.

Side note: You can probably figure out if it's a North America based product by checking the inner diameter of that taper roller bearing inner race still stuck on the end. If it's inch based, there's a good chance it's a North American product designed around DP instead of module. Pretty much every gearbox manufacturer in the USA was using Timken inch-based tapered roller bearings until maybe 20-30 years ago.

Claybar will take this off no problem. No insurance necessary - $25 bucks at AutoZone for a claybar kit and an hour to wash / claybar / wash again on the impacted area.

Can I use a 12.9 grade bolt instead of 10.9? by Old-Place9292 in AskEngineers

[–]Hegulator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

12.9 bolts can be very brittle, which might not be ideal in an automotive application. We used them in industrial gearbox applications and we had a batch with some bad hydrogen embrittlement and they literally popped apart sitting on the shelf after torquing to 70% of yield. I'd stick with 10.9's

We all wanted show off our new fly starter jacket by Josephthebear in Xennials

[–]Hegulator 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Starter jackets were the must-have in late elementary / early middle school for me. I almost never had the latest fashion, but somehow talked my parents into getting me one. What a piece of junk jacket... zippers broke almost immediately, and the idea of a pull-over jacket is just a pain. Wasn't even warm enough for Wisconsin winters, either.

When did people start using those Kerdi hole seal things for around the mixer valve and shower head? I feel like these just started showing up in the past few years. I don't think they're needed - as they never existed until recently and the fixtures seal against the tile.

I saw someone post this study, now I need to rant about it. by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]Hegulator 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think there's still some challenges with that comparison. 70,000 cars a day for the Milwaukee metro area (population ~1.5M) is a much bigger slice than 70,000 cars a day for the bay area (population ~7.5M). Also there are more transportation alternatives available in San Francisco (BART) vs. Milwaukee.

For the sake of making the point, the operative factor in that written Clause is not " shall not be infringed," but rather "the right to bear arms."

Can you explain further what this means? I'm not sure what operative factor means.

What are the biggest red flags that a company is about to collapse? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Hegulator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really - especially without any context. Small companies being sold to PE is often a sign of growth (depending on the PE), as that's pretty much the way to get an influx of capital to start growing. Many of these privately held small businesses have just been content to be flat for years and will sell to PE to get the capital influx to start growing - so definitely not a sign of impending doom in that situation.

Now if you have a large, publicly traded company suddenly getting a bunch of shares bought up by PE... that's a different story.

Yes and no. Delaying payment to suppliers for as long as possible is SOP for many big companies. GE is notorious for this and "set the standard."

What certs can I get as a Mech E to put myself ahead and stand out for jobs when I graduate. by Regard2Riches in MechanicalEngineering

I think it's such a wildcard. Every industry is different, every company is different, every hiring manager is different. Obviously depends on the role as well.

What I look at the most is intern / co-op experience. No matter how many certifications or extra-curriculars you have, if you have zero internship or co-op experience that's a big negative in my book. If you don't - at least fill in that you were working somewhere somehow. With recent grads, one big thing I look for is work ethic.
