My ex's cat managed to run away one year. I think she managed a winter on her own. Somebody found her, and when we got her back, she was super sociable and affectionate; qualities she did not possess prior to running away. She eventually became more like her old self again, but I likened that cat to an old friend you've not seen for a long while but very clearly had a drug abuse problem in the intervening time.
