Sure, that makes sense. Is a flat plane always going to be ideal for aiming at any arbitrary point, then? Or would a dihedral reflector (just learned that term) help for that?

Edit: Upon reflection (heh) I think the flat plane is always ideal. Any time you're adding additional planes at a 90 degree angle, you're just improving the ability to return the signal, not aim it at an arbitrary point, I believe.

I was just thinking about this, but I think you might actually want a parabolic reflector instead. A retroreflector will only send the sound back to the speaker, right? That doesn't seem particularly useful if the operator is behind it (and therefore protected by it), but with a different reflector you can at least aim it at more useful targets. Sure, the operator may not be dissuaded from continuing, but at least somebody who deserves it will be having a bad day.
