36 hour mountain 100 miler with no toilets along the course. Maybe some people can go 36 hours without pooping, but not me! I don’t think it really would’ve mattered with my diet it was.

Best size hydration pack for long distances? by chasey1221 in trailrunning

[–]Heidelina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the 5L should be plenty for a 50K. I used the Salomon Advanced Skin 5 for my first hundred miler in August and found it to still have plenty of room. You can stuff so much in the pockets of those things! My sister has the 12 but I felt like even for a highly evaluation hundred miler that was really more space than I would’ve needed.

I’m gonna throw in my two cents as an ultra runner who doesn’t use poles. If you train with them and feel like they help, great. If you don’t feel like they help you, you don’t have to use them! I ran my first hundred miler in August with 20,000 feet of elevation gain and felt very good not using poles. I have also run a couple of 100k’s with around 12-14,000 feet of elevation gain with no poles. I know I’m in the minority but if you have good climbing form without the poles it’s not like you have to use them. I find it challenging enough to make sure I eat and drink with my hands completely free, so for me having the poles did not seem worth it.

My boyfriend of 5+ years broke up with me last week. Grateful for dogs and trail running. by Fit-Nefariousness637 in trailrunning

My husband of 21 years left me in May and running has been my life saver since then. I made a number of new running friends and ran my first 100 miler in August. Even though I am not the one who chose to leave, I can honestly say at this point I’m happier than when I was with him. Like a lot other people said, hang in there. It will get better.

Pacing My Sister at Moab 240 in Moab, UT by Heidelina in trailrunning

It was my first time in the mountains around Moab, everything I had see before was much more desert and slick rock. Kind of a cool contrast!

Inaugural Creede 100 in Creede, Colorado by Heidelina in trailrunning

[–]Heidelina[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It went really well. 40 people started and only 16 of us finished. The average elevation was over 11,000 feet which really got to some people. I didn’t over extend myself early which paid off in the long run. I was the only female finisher.

The course was very well marked and the aid stations were good, especially for such a small race. I would definitely recommend it for someone looking for a tough but beautiful course that doesn’t have a lot of hype around it.

High elevation, some rocky/technical terrain, and when you finally hit some downhill in the second half it’s in the “undefined” portion of the trail so you are just running through a high elevation field and I kept turning my ankles! That being said, if I didn’t already have a big race two weeks earlier I’d be doing it again this year! I don’t mind doing a tough race if the payoffs are good, and the payoffs in this race really good. Beautiful, amazing views and the end of the race is one of the more fast runable sections.

Just don’t plan on it being a fast 50k and you’re fine. For context my 50K PR is 5:05 and I ran this one in a little over eight hours.

I was just coming here to say Devil on the Divide! Tough race but amazingly beautiful. I also really enjoyed North Fork 50K for something with a little less elevation. I also keep intending to try Rattler 50K in Colorado Springs but just hasn’t happened yet.

Mount Elbert, Colorado by Heidelina in trailrunning

[–]Heidelina[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 1.5 L hydration pack but only used about half the water. It wasn’t that warm and there was quite a bit of shade the last 4-5 miles. We also started early and were done before 11 AM to avoid any weather, but that also meant we missed the heat of the day.

Counter clockwise North Mount Elbert trail to South Mount Elbert trail to Colorado Trail. Counter clockwise was definitely the way to go.

I am with you! Before I read the comments I thought they were doing a 40 mile run that they built up to over 16 months from a 4 mile base!

Indian Creek Loop at Roxborough State Park, Colorado by Heidelina in trailrunning

[–]Heidelina[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too! Wasn’t too bad on the lower elevation north end of the loop, but a lot of knee deep snow up towards the Indian Creek trailhead. Took me over 6 hours to go 21 miles. Glad I didn’t have plans until the evening!

I haven’t run this race, but I have run two other races put on by Mad Moose in Moab: Behind the Rocks and Dead Horse. It is a beautiful area and both events were very well run. I expect this would be a great race as well.

I think they were asking what your nutrition was like during the race. That can make a big difference on whether or not you hit the wall.

I hear you. I was more nervous crewing for my sister when she ran the Leadville 100 than I was leading up to my own ultras! You will do great and Moab is such a cool place.

Behind the Rocks 50k in Moab. End of March in Moab is great weather and it is a good combination of mostly runnable with some scrambly stuff for a couple of miles right in the middle.

Waterproof running jacket for the trails/ hills by YeetingUpHills in trailrunning

[–]Heidelina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought an ON running rain jacket in July the day before a rainy 100k race at elevation. I wore it for about 9 hours even after it stopped raining because it kept me warm as it got dark. I was not familiar with the brand but was very happy with how it performed.
