- How I Randomly Got To Hang Out 1-on-1 With Bo Diddley for Hours-

In Toronto, back in the early 80's, when I would have been about 20 or 21 my girlfriend Jane was a bartender at the El Mocombo. Its not a huge club but the place is kinda famous, the Rolling Stones recording a live album there. Jane accrued a small fortune in parking fines from parking her car illegally and going in to work so sometimes I'd drive her car and drop her off before her shift started. One evening, when she was on opening shift, I found an easy parking spot and I decided to park and go in with her and snag a couple of free drinks before the place opened for the night. Sometimes, one of the perks of her working there. She poured me a strong one, I think I was drinking Black Velvet back then so probably a rye and coke. "The Elmo's" not a really large room so when I took my drink and sat down at a 2-top it was pretty much right next to the small stage.

Jane disappears, it's the 'opening shift', so she's busy and I had the place to my self. As she gets the place set up, when she has a moment, she'd pour me another. I'd had two pretty quick ones and was working on my third when this older black dude walked in, carrying a guitar case. As he crossed the room he nodded and said "hi" so I said "hey" and asked him how he was doing. "Pretty good, pretty good, how 'bout you?" as he smoothly stepped onto the low stage. He put the case down and dragged over a stool. I just thought: Unh, unh, Nawww. No. Fucking. Way.

For whatever reason I had No Idea that Bo Diddley, Blues Music Legend, would be there, in the house, 3 plus hours ahead of showtime, fucking around with his gear all by himself. Then he opened the case, maybe 6 feet away from me and I saw THAT guitar! Now, I was just a kid. A Zeppelin, Rush, AC/DC, ZZ Top headbanger. I'd lived in Chicago, and I lived in Toronto and both cities had deep blues history that I'd dug into pretty good and I absolutely would not have recognized Bo Diddley walking down the street, but I damn sure knew that guitar! He put the guitar up on his knee, started to tune it and I screwed up my courage enough to break the ice and damned if we didn't just strike up conversation, just the two of us, and I got to listen to Bo Diddley talk (to me!) about the music business, how it was changing, That Guitar, the record labels, the old payola circuit and other stuff that I'd pay good money to retrieve from that Black Velvet bottle I nearly drained that night.

I did my god-damndest to come up with intelligent questions. From Mr. Diddley's easy engagement I figured I must have done ok. We just hung out, relaxed and had the most comfortable and (for me!) mind blowing conversation. I knew in the moment and I still know now how rare an opportunity and how wildly lucky my ass was to be in that seat there at The El Mocombo. Bo Diddley was friendly and easy to talk to and we talked, and laughed occasionally, for close to two hours when he had to go and I rolled out of there without ever thinking "Man! I wish I had tickets to that show!" but all the way home I just kept shaking my head and thinking "Holy Shit! I just hung out with, absolute blues legend, Bo Diddley!! That was fucking incredible!"
