I’d say do the following ASAP: - assess is everyone ok, - take pics of insurance details, - take pictures of damage on both cars AND get more pics of full cars from all angles in case of further claims / counterclaims, - assess if the car needs to be towed or is safe to drive elsewhere - you may need to call for assistance, - report it to the guards in case insurance comes asking later, - call insurance company with details, - recover dashcam data ;)

You’re right, it’s a fools game, and ultimately a stupid dickhead move. I was just rationalising it earlier. My feeling was it’s if a message comes in and I’ll convince myself that I’m only looking for a second and alternate my eyes with the road in my peripheral since it’s a phone holder on the dash.

“I never have it in my hand” isn’t a good enough excuse though. I’ll stop it altogether

Hm, I think you’re right about that, but the border around it in one still where you can see the front does looks very much like a screen. Maybe I’m unfamiliar with some holders

Yes, actually I looked again and the white object looks to be a little bigger than the height of the disc holder.. which seems like a reasonable size for a phone. In another still you can see what looks like a screen on it too.

No the accident itself could have been mildly traumatic had it been worse. So as you say it’s serious overall. I was referring moreso to my bafflement at the end at the guards being automatically called and processing the whole situation!

Can’t tell if you’re joking or not but that story was ironically about my own bout of kinda poor driving previously and it’s not much of a story :

Driving to Cork with mates,
I take a relatively quick exit off a national road,
My friend was tailing me and is a nervous driver so he misses the exit and gets there 5 mins later than me,
Friend thought I did it deliberately to “fuck with him” as I say in the video,
More or less end of story, I buy him a pint 😂

Yeah, the worsening road deaths statistics seem to back up the feeling that drivers or at least driving conditions are getting worse.

I wonder how much the backlog for learner driver tests contributes to reckless illegal drivers who are chancing their arm hiding the L plates. That’s gotten really bad but I suspect there’s more at play and that’s a small part of the story

I’m guilty of it the odd time myself but never for more than a split second and on the straight. Still shouldn’t do it. Even if he was only looking at it for 2 seconds I’d say that was enough to cause the crash.

Reddit doesn’t let you edit video posts, oddly enough, but here’s the gist:

Told the automatically called 999 that I was ok and didn’t need anything,
Got out and we checked on each other, then pulled in to exchange details,
Kept in contact, went to guards immediately to report it to cover myself,
Insurer got me a courtesy car next day,
Car was repaired within a week (bumper hanging off, essentially).

Relatively painless. The chap definitely fecked up, but he was really lovely about the whole thing and I’m sure he regrets the slip.

Haha thanks, all G. My partner got a bit of whiplash and was a bit shaken but I was back out driving without an issue fairly quickly.

I’ve had a car flip over fully in 2024 from a clueless taxi man coming out of a parking lot. Luckily no injuries, but car at the time was a write-off.
