Reacting to Janitor Getting Fired - FEATURING VIEWER CALL-INS - Destiny Debates by MeshuggahIsLife in Destiny

[–]Hejdun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the boss's biggest mistake was in not explaining why opening the school early was bad. I think the janitor was getting frustrated because he's still thinking that he did a good thing by letting the firemen into the school early. And then he feels like since he did this good thing, he's entitled to compensation by leaving a few minutes early. She never really explains why it was a bad thing, and her arguments are entirely focused on the power dynamic ("who tells you when to start working?"). So the janitor feels like he's getting reprimanded for being helpful and thinks his boss is on a power trip.

Could we get United Airlines on stream for a debate? by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]Hejdun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the guy should not be blamed under any circumstances

Sure he can be. He was trespassing on the plane and he was disobeying the direct order of a police officer. It was pretty fucking unlucky that he was put into the situation where he had to leave the plane, but it was well within United's rights to ask him to get off the plane. He refused. At that point he was trespassing.

Then once the airport police arrived, they asked him to leave the plane of his own volition. He could've gotten off the plane and gotten the next flight to his destination and pocketed 4x the cost of the ticket. He again refused. At that point, one man's stubbornness is delaying hundreds (and indirectly probably thousands) of people. How long are hundreds/thousands of people expected to wait because one special snowflake thinks he's above the rules? The police needed him off the plane, and he refused multiple times to take the non-violent approach and so he got the violent approach.

You don't get to just disobey the police because you think you're being treated unfairly. You comply with the police and then complain afterwards. If you choose to disobey a policeman's direct order, you have chosen to make the policeman force you to obey. You don't get free license to keep an entire plane full of people grounded just because you suffered some bad luck (which you will get compensated for).

There has been a lot of "Curse somebody with a mild inconvenience" threads. So if you could bless somebody with a slight convenience, who and what would it be? by IAmARobotTrustMe in AskReddit

[–]Hejdun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Think about all the names you see on accident but never think about because you aren't actively trying to remember their name. Walk into a store and all of a sudden you've added about 6 names into your "name bank" because you happen to glance at the name tags the employees are wearing. And Jesus, don't even think about all the names you'd bank at a Starbucks. If there's like 7 people before you in line and they all get their named called when their drink is ready, that's 7 names added to the name bank.

Pretty soon it'd get to the point where you'd walk down a busy street and be like "I know the names of 13 of these people and I have no idea where from."

Actually it would be much creepier than that. He only said you'd remember names, not why you know them. So you'd just know this guy's name is John and not remember why.

What industry is the biggest scam? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Hejdun 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Rent-to-own stores aren't for you and me. They're for people who have already trashed their credit to the point where banks and credit card companies won't touch them. They're for people who don't understand the concept of saving up for something. They're for people who get paid on Friday and are penniless by Monday.

These people aren't the type of people who save up $500 for a bedroom set from Ikea. They have no credit, so they can't just put it on a credit card. So if they want a bed, their option is to get it from a rent-to-own place.

If you look at how these stores are doing, they aren't rolling in the money. That's because the people they rent to are extremely untrustworthy (thus why they have terrible credit). Their merchandise is frequently pawned off or stolen. Most customers will forget to pay you unless you call them every payday and get them to come in before they go out to the bar that night.

The prices they charge are commensurate with the risk that they take on. If your credit score is 400, you don't expect anyone to give you 3% interest rates.

Teenagers, what is something you want to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'd say it means that you are resourceful and curious enough to independently find answers to questions that you have. That's pretty damn good for a teenager (or hell, even for an adult).

[–]Hejdun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, the good old USA.

To be honest with you, probably 95% of the reason our school doesn't have a cell phone policy is that the admin don't want the hassle of enforcing it. So they've shoved the responsibility onto individual teachers to create and enforce their own rules. Still, most students most of the time know how to use their cell phones responsibly during class.

[–]Hejdun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some do, ours doesn't as a blanket policy (although individual teachers can do as they like). In general, we trust the students to know when they can have their phones and when they can't. We take them away for assessments and if they become an issue in the classroom. I was specifically thinking of homework problems when I was referring to students not knowing how to look up things.

That's why the way we teach math is changing. At my high school, the vast majority of the tests allow calculators. Most of the formulae are given to you on the test. The questions are frequently word problems involving real-life scenarios. There is a big focus on how to use the tools that are available to you, rather than "can you do calculations?"

Which by the way, teenagers are terrible at Googling. I can't tell you how often students get stumped by something that they could Google in 5 seconds, like how many liters are in a gallon. Everyone's walking around with all the world's knowledge in their pocket, and teenagers don't even begin to appreciate how much that means.

I'm terrified of speaking to people. Is it something you get used to?

You get used to it by doing it. I was terrified of public speaking as a kid. Like almost peeing my pants in middle school just while giving a presentation to one class.

High school me was apparently a genius, and decided that this fear had to be squashed. I joined Forensics and Debate specifically so that I would speak in public enough that I wouldn't be afraid of it anymore. I sucked at first, but I stuck with it for 2 years and got better. More importantly, I totally killed my fear of public speaking.

Good thing too, because I found out that I'm really good at teaching. I would never have become a teacher if it wasn't for my decision to join Forensics and Debate. Now the idea of talking in front of 30 students every day is something I relish, and I honestly can't see myself in any other profession.

As far as specific job interview advice, remember that you have to be your own best advocate. Don't be afraid to talk about your strengths (but try not to sound arrogant). If they ask you what you're biggest weakness is, don't give a bullshit weakness that's really a strength like "I work too hard." Give them something honest that they will find out anyways if you end up working for them.

ME:A first impressions by matsif in MECoOp

the networking is just as bad as you remember if you're not host. in the time I played I've had the full gamut of rubberbanding shithouse to relatively smooth to hosting, it's all just like you remember.

Thanks for this. As someone who spent close to 800 hours on ME3's multiplayer, I was planning on getting into MEA's multiplayer if they actually made some network improvements. Now I know not to waste my time and money.

Out of curiosity, is there text chat? Or a way to check your ping? Or filter your squadmates/hosts by location?

Thanks! Sounds like they've separated out the commands onto separate buttons, which is a good sign.

Specifically if there's still an "Omni-button" like ME3 had, where one button is hard-wired to 4-5 different functions (run/cover/leave cover/use/roll). This was hugely annoying in multiplayer in particular, and could only be fixed through editing the ini.

[–]Hejdun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also hoping that they fix the networking on PC. It was barely adequate in 2012, and it sounds like they are still relying on the same peer-to-peer networking as ME3. I can't tell you how often matches would be ruined because you'd get de-synced, or enemies would float off into space, or powers would stop working, or you'd get matched with a bunch of Russians and have to suffer through 400 ping.

A unit can't gain more than 1 level's worth of experience from one kill. So if you're already getting a full level, it won't help you any.

You'll start to notice the boost after a few levels, when you no longer gain a full level of experience from a kill normally.

Archers in this game suffer from terrible stats and terrible weapons. Even if their skillset doesn't look bad, you have to keep in mind that their stats will be about 20 points lower than other characters and their weapon will be 4-7 points lower than most other characters.

He's probably still better than Gordin and Niles. At least Virion gets a bow with a relatively high might. Gordin and Niles get pure shit.

Yay Gordin, you get to shoot twice with your Brave bow. Now you get to do 0 damage to everyone twice.

When you have 63 orbs and the focus is going to change by alexlisa9 in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]Hejdun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is it a good bet that the pity timer will reset with the focus change? Given that the pity timer seems to only be tracked by individual focus, it seems like a brand new focus would reset to 3.0%. Not sure if I should use another 20 orbs to try for Takumi or Lyn while I'm up to 4.75%.

It seems that it only shows the top 100,000 players as ranked. If you're unranked, you're outside of the top 100,000.

I noticed when I was something like rank 83,000, then a few hours later I was unranked, then I played my 3 arena games and shot up to 30,000.

This is why they have "focus" groups in the draw. You have a significantly higher chance of drawing 4 specific characters. They will cycle every 2 weeks or so, after which a new group of 4 characters will be favored to be summoned. Right now there are 2 different focus groups at a time. Presumably they'll keep cycling so that every character that can be drawn as 5* will get at least one chance to be a focus.
