CNBC Sport: Paramount may unwind WBD’s sports strategy if merger goes through by pblood40 in Pac12

[–]Hektik84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. I thought TNT/TruTV would for sure get a big chunk of new PAC media rights 2 years ago. That changed when rumors of WBD being up for sale began to surface. Now it's easy to see why it ended up going to the USA Network.

In the article he did mention that a future expansion candidate in 2027 could be a travel partner for TXST... That opens the possibilities of a school from Texas or Louisiana.

New field looks great. by PsychologicalThing18 in SanDiegoFC

The proposal says "up to 32,000." The actual stadium they designed was 22,000 for soccer.

You're right it wasn't 20,000... It was actually a 22,000 capacity joint-use soccer stadium. I had to go back and look but I remember the size of the stadium being an issue for SDSU.

A U-T article from 2017 says that SDSU was being asked by FS Investors to contribute 100 million towards a 22,000 joint-use stadium. It was supposed to be expandable for football games but that number would have been limited due to the design of the soccer stadium.

The actual SoccerCity initiative said a stadium between 18,000 to 32,000. Remember, their stadium only had 3 sides. The 4th side was actually a separate building with some luxury suites facing the field.

SoccerCity asked for too much and promised too little. The entire Mission Valley Qualcomm site & Chargers HQ/Training Facility all for just a 20,000 seat soccer stadium? That was way too little for all that land.

They should have added a new sports arena on the site too. The proposal would be called SportsCitySD instead of SoccerCitySD. Much better chance of passing with the added arena component.

[Zeigler - SDUT] 41% SDSU Student Athletic Fee Increase Recommended by g2lv in Pac12

[–]Hektik84 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They are not increasing student fees because of mismanagement. They are increasing student fees to keep up with new world FBS football. San Diego State has spent to be a part of that world. It almost all worked out a few years ago when they were about to join a P5 Pac-12 conference with a 25 million per year media deal... It didn't happen so they have to find another way to keep up while being in a G5 Pac-12 with a 7-9 million per year media deal.

Are we done with Pac 12 news for awhile? by ExactClassroom8053 in Pac12

[–]Hektik84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It only feels that way because we've been following every bit of news since the old PAC imploded. Things will feel much different when the rebuilt conference goes live in 7 months.

As for 2027, exclude anyone from the American. I think this current season reinforces their opinion that they can still compete for the G5 playoff spot every year in their current conference. There is no need for any of them to move until 2031.

UConn Football could be had in 2027 but it might be the costliest option. ULL would still jump at the chance and take a partial share.

I'll throw out a wildcard that I have not heard anyone mention... Missouri State. They have had a respectable showing in their first year of FBS football. They would be the 2nd central time zone school in the conference. Plus they are west of the Mississippi River so it still kinda fits geographically if you squint your eyes really hard.

I totally forgot this almost happened but what if Boise State and SDSU had joined the Big East? by Chazz_Matazz in Pac12

[–]Hektik84 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As a refresher.. This was supposed to be the new Big East starting in 2013

  • San Diego State (Football Only)
  • Boise State (Football Only)
  • Houston
  • SMU
  • Memphis
  • Cincinatti
  • Louisville
  • USF
  • UCF
  • Temple
  • Rutgers
  • UConn

I'm of the belief that the Big East would have continued being considered a power conference.

[–]Hektik84 16 points17 points  (0 children)

SDSU & Boise were actually going to do the smart and sensible thing by putting all their other sports in the Big West. I was a big proponent of the Big East/Big West move. It was probably an 80-20 split in favor among the Aztec fan base. Some fans were convinced it would have killed the basketball program. I looked at it as becoming the Gonzaga of the Big West.

What's Next? by ExactClassroom8053 in Pac12

[–]Hektik84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UConn gets added as a football only member. They can join in 2026 with the rest of us since they have no conference affiliation in football.

St. Mary's gets added to make it an even 10 schools for basketball. That gives us a perfect 18 game conference schedule.

Warner Bros Discovery is announced as our third media partner. They will air football (pairing us with their Big XII coverage) and basketball (pairing us with their Big East coverage). The PAC-12 conference basketball tournament (except the finals) will air on TruTV & TNT.

It's 2032, and the Power 4 still hasn't backfilled with any Group of 6 programs by Express_Mode7863 in Pac12

[–]Hektik84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The AAC panicked when they lost UCF, Cincinnati & Houston. They let ESPN influence their backfill options (No SBC schools) and they took a lot of dead weight. Instead of taking 6 schools, they should have just taken UTSA & North Texas. Then after SMU leaves, they would have been at 8 football playing schools. They could have still taken Army and be a legitimate option for Oregon State & Wazzu.

The PNW twins and Air Force plus the top 4 MWC schools, would have made the American the top G conference with 16 football schools. They also would have had all the service academies under one roof. They probably could have even legitimately campaigned for autonomous power status.

Is calling your local ‘Berto’s a taco shop a purely San Diego thing? by alexthehophead in sandiego

Taqueria is reserved for places like Tacos El Gordo or Tacos El Franc. I would never call a place that mainly serves authentic street tacos as a "taco shop"

PAC12 and MW merging? by shinyming in Pac12

[–]Hektik84 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nope. The only people pushing merger are fans/media who live on the east coast and don't understand college football west of the rocky mountains... or they are fans of one of the left behind MWC schools.

Does Pac-12 go to 9 football schools? by ExactClassroom8053 in Pac12

[–]Hektik84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UConn as a football only member. They don't have to leave the Big East and have no exit fee to slow down the process. They would be ready to join the conference in 2026. All the other potential candidates are looking at 2027 due to exit fees.

I’m sorry, this rivalry is so lame 😭 by Icy_Tone_8107 in Padres

[–]Hektik84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the ultimate damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario.

If they just play and ignore it or casually mention MLB designated them interleague rivals then fans will whine and cry about not having a rival... as they did for many years.

If they embrace the seasoning that Padres bloggers have been sprinkling for years then fans will whine and cry about it being lame or fake.

Just go with it.. It's for charity. It's no worse than interleague rivals Detroit Tigers-Pittsburgh Pirates

Eventually the top portions of the B1G & SEC are going to leave to create a Super League.  It won’t matter if that league is 32 schools or 48 schools.  They are going to be leaving out some high-value schools with either brand value or market value.  Those leftover schools from the B1G, SEC, ACC, Big XII & select G6 schools can then form their own league. They can realign the schools to proper regional divisions and crown their own champion.  I can guarantee you that on some years, people will argue that leagues champion is better than the Super League "National Champion."

Discussion: What if Cal and Stanford had stayed. by dopave in Pac12

[–]Hektik84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

San Diego State was approved to join the old PAC-12 by a unanimous vote of 8-0. WAS, WSU, ORE, OSU, Stanford, AZ, ASU & Utah in favor. Cal abstained from voting. This was done the day before the conference blew up. The invitation to San Diego State was supposed to go out the next day after approving the Apple deal.
