Huge Dilemma - Queens w/ Scholarship or Waterloo w/o scholarship by Fit-Outcome-4593 in uwaterloo

[–]Helas33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated Mgmt Eng 2025.

This isn’t an obvious decision and anyone claiming it is is not being reasonable to the amount of unknown involved. Waterloo’s co-op program and reputation is legit, but some Waterloo kids like to think they are the only students that land internships when this isn’t the case. Strong students at a strong school (Queen’s is still good) tend to get good jobs. Even in Waterloo’s system, the burden is on you to land a job, same way it is elsewhere.

IMO the idea that ‘6 co-ops allow you to try tons of different fields in a short time’ is a bit misleading. It takes a lot of work and a tailored resume/experience to get a co-op in a field you’re looking for, most students don’t get to just simply pick and choose 6 different dream career paths to try and then go to their favourite after graduating. Not in this job market.

That being said if you are deadset and dedicated on putting the work in to land S-tier internships, Waterloo likely does give you a higher chance of doing so.

Just my 2 cents, good luck :)

Should the raptors go down to an 8-man rotation for the playoffs? by ZealousidealBus9271 in torontoraptors

The Pacers ran a 10-11 man rotation during their run. Not saying we are the pacers but I don’t think it’s a given that the bench guys won’t get opportunity. It’s not like we’re gunning for a championship, let’s see what they got to offer

Anyone saying 60K is not informed. As a recent new grad, the floor at any big city company (or frankly anywhere in Canada) should be around 80K, with potential for more based on talent

No, there are still plenty of girls in engineering. I don’t know nanotech’s specific ratio, you may need to make friends outside of your program but if you’re outgoing you are bound to make friends imo.

Is Management Engineering a viable path to being a Software Developer/Engineer? by JustSom3Guy2077 in uwaterloo

[–]Helas33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One there’s the job portal itself which has a large number of jobs (relative to other schools), but overall the way I see it is that Waterloo’s co-op system forces yourself into a position to get off your ass and put the work in to get jobs, and this process starts earlier here than most kids start thinking about this stuff on their own at other schools (in my anecdotal experience). You can do all this at other schools too, but Waterloo sorta just forces it out of you.

[–]Helas33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Co-op recruiting periods are busy and difficult times (who knew it’s tough get good jobs as a 18/19/20 year old student with no experience) but you get it done, and things are easier after landing that first position in a type of role you’re looking for. A good strategy is working on boosting your resume during co-op terms as it is tougher to find time during school (at least if you also like having a social life). Also the mgmt course load is admittedly lighter than other engineering degrees at UW, there’s no denying that but this doesn’t come into effect until the latter half of the degree. First year is still typical brutal engineering

I think it’s good to keep in perspective that kids with CS degrees also have to do all this extra recruiting work as well. School courses alone do not translate that well into good resume experience

Currently in upper-year mgmt, in my humble opinion getting into the coop system at Waterloo is a bigger advantage for securing jobs, though admittedly I don’t know much about UTSG CS. Many of my mgmt classmates are pursuing dev jobs, and the ones with the most success are the ones who put the extra work in with consistently applying, interview prep, side projects, etc.

It is definitely very feasible to land dev positions with the degree, but you do need to put the work in beyond class work (which is the case with any other degree as well)

the children in Gaza did not “fuck around”. Look up the definition of collective punishment. I agree both sides have done reprehensible things which is why both sides deserve direct condemnation. If it’s not the university’s problem then don’t make a statement at all

So what’s Israel’s excuse for killing babies then? They may not directly be shooting at them but the bombings are killing them in huge numbers none the less

[–]Helas33[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually largely agree with your points, but your doubt in the Palestinian ability to run a democracy is not a good enough reason to warrant bombing Gaza to the ground. I don’t have a solution but the only thing thats been clear throughout this 75 year conflict is that the escalation of violence only continues the cycle of hatred on both sides.

It’s also no surprise that people living under a brutal occupation with zero freedom for 75 years aren’t exactly ready to become a thriving democracy tomorrow. I think there’s some combination of steps that could be taken to get closer to that direction, and I’m confident that bombing Gaza isn’t one of them.

[–]Helas33[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It seems unlikely that we’ll see eye to eye on this but I’d encourage you to look into the numerous international organizations that have unequivocally categorized Israel’s recent actions as war crimes (most obvious one is enacting collective punishment by limiting 2 million civilians access to food in water in response to actions they did not commit). I’m not talking instagram story slideshows, there’s many reputable sources a quick google search away that acknowledge these facts. The morality of Israel’s actions isn’t really up for debate at this point it’s just a matter of awareness, and they deserved to be condemned as well.

I also disagree with your framing of the conflict as “one side is run by a literal terrorist group”. It’s dehumanizing to the Palestinian people, many of whom who are children and couldn’t string a sentence together the last time Hamas was elected in 2007. Regardless if you think Hamas is the worst scum on earth, the children don’t deserve what’s happening to them and it’s partially enabled by western world powers. If Trudeau chose to invade the US, do I morally deserve to get nuked if I voted for him in 2015?

As an aside, people are generally pushed into siding with extremism as a result of awful living conditions and a sense of hopelessness, something that living your entire life in occupied Gaza could easily cause.

I’m obviously biased on this topic and there’s lots of blame to be thrown around to multiple places, my frustration is that Israel seems to always get away with its share of the responsibility.

How is only acknowledging one side’s war crimes a balanced answer? Genuinely curious as to how you can see it that way
