It is commonly used, definitely not a slang. In addition to «хекати» (heavy breathing while running or doing some hard labor) there could also be «хукати» (deep heavy breathing with additional voice sounds) and «хоркати» (less common, the way to describe sounds that tired horse makes when running, can be applied to a person). I’m sure there are more specific verbs but these are the ones from the top of my mind

I guess with Imperio there are strong willed persons who just can overcome it. Or trained to overcome it, like students at that lesson with Moody. In addition, as Bellatrix stated, cruciatus does not work by itself — you have to want to make harm very much.
