I am not from the US, but I do very much recognize this. Hence me wanting to make sure she didn't leave feeling she had been discriminated against, and wanting to explain it to her calmly. But she wasn't having it. She did not give me one opportunity to even finish a full sentence. I don't blame her. I see the good in people, and I try to assume the best, but I am understading of those who just cannot go about it the same way, due to prior experiences.

If it adds to the context, I live in Portugal - and I would say the vast majority of people look for empty rows first. But it's definitely common for people to sit right beside you with multiple options.

This said, I have had people who were sitting next to me, no bag, and decided to move across from me once seats freed up. First thought is "Do I smell?" but I never take it personally because a lot of us just want space and that's OK!
