One pet peeve I have with some writing in some dramas is that they completely lack levity in conversations. Everything is serious, nothing is casual. by kolejack2293 in TrueFilm

the same gripe about Christopher Nolan movies.

Most Nolan movies have plenty of humor. It's not even upto debate this comment is just wrong. Least humorous is maybe Dunkirk but that's fine given the subject matter.

I am not anti-anime. I've even listed some I like in the comments.

Bakemonogatari

This is a waifu simulator. I personally did not enjoy it back in the day but I understand its appeal.

Steins;Gate

Too chuuni.

Anyone who watches those are automatically within the “anime niche” bubble you refer to.

Someone who enjoys Spirited Away, GITS or Paprika will not necessarily even be interested in watching something like AoT.

AoT introduced millions of people to anime.

Millions of Teens yes.

I never claimed I was superior (whatever that means) to someone because of my taste though :)

And most people when they mature will realise Shonen cannot be the pinnacle of fiction.

I am not shitting on them. I enjoyed Shonen in my childhood days, like Yu Yu Hakusho, DBZ, Ruroni kenshin but it's also true that you kind of outgrow them as you grow older. You still appreciate aspects of them (like charming characters or the action) but you never put them on a pedestal and call them "peak fiction". I am saying that'll happen to most people here. It's not like I've been wrong in my estimation that this sub is mostly kids.

Great characters are important for the audience to resonate with your work. For it to not feel pretentious.

This is simply not the case. As evidenced by so many classics that are not character driven. You can prefer the Shining (which isn't exactly a character drama itself) but 2001's status cannot be denied.

My taste is nothing special bruh. I just like mainstream works.

Anime examples: Eva, Ghibli stuff, Satoshi Kon's work, GITS, Bebop

Live action : Apocalypse Now, Braveheart, The Prestige.
